Cherreads

Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

After Saito left, I entered the inn and asked for a room. The basic room cost one big copper for a week, including dinner. I agreed, and the receptionist—her name was Miya—led me to the room. It had a bed, a table, and a chair. The bed was placed near a window. It wasn't bad. I accepted the room and received the key. The inn was called the Red Boar Inn, named after the city's famous red boar meat.

After exiting the inn, I went back to the Adventurers' Guild in the afternoon and took a quest to hunt a lone wolf. I then arrived at the city gates, where the guards checked my guild card before letting me through. I headed toward the area where the wolves were located. The wolves were gray in color, and I needed to collect their horns and fangs as proof.

I've noticed that most people probably faint the first time they see blood or kill something. Maybe my past life memories were affecting me. I made a mental note to try to recall anything useful from my previous life that could help me survive in this world.

When I reached the place where the wolves were supposed to be, I saw something unexpected. The wolves I was meant to hunt were already dead—and standing over them was a huge monster. It was a wolf, but it didn't match the quest description.

As I was thinking, it suddenly attacked. I dodged just in time. It used wind magic—something similar to Wind Cutter, but not quite the same. Then it rushed at me. I leapt into a tree, my body surprisingly light. I could jump high—likely beyond normal human capabilities—but I didn't think about it too much. I was just glad I escaped.

Then the wolf used Wind Cutter again and sliced the tree down. As I was falling, I drew my katana and swung. I managed to decapitate the beast.

Afterward, I wondered what to do. Then I remembered the magic Saito had taught me—to store items. I stored the corpses and teleported behind the guild building. Saito had warned me not to use teleportation in front of others, so I made sure no one saw.

Inside the guild, I told the receptionist about the situation. She asked for proof. I said I had the bodies and was led to the butchering area to present them. I took out the corpses: four lone wolves and the black wolf that had attacked me.

She looked shocked and said I was lucky. The black wolf was a red-rank quest monster, and it usually didn't use magic beyond Wind Cutter.

"So… is the quest completed or not?" I asked.

She nodded. "Yes, and your rank will be increased to Blue. You'll also receive ten silver for the extra wolf."

I was surprised that I had taken down a red-ranked monster so easily. Maybe it was time I explored more of my past life's memories.

After collecting my reward and leaving the guild, I noticed someone following me. I turned into an alley to confirm—and they followed. A group surrounded me.

"Hand over your storage pouch and the money you got from the guild," one of them demanded.

"And if I don't?"

"We'll break your arms and cut off your legs."

"I refuse."

"Then die!"

They charged with blades drawn.

"You're the ones who drew weapons first. Don't blame me."

I twisted the arm of the first man—he screamed as it snapped. I kicked the second one in the stomach, and he collapsed, face-first, breaking his nose. The last one, who had been talking, got a punch in the gut that knocked him out cold. I handed them over to the guards.

Back in my room at the inn, I tried to focus on my past life memories. There were so many—some of magic, others of advanced technology. One type, in particular, caught my attention: magic swords.

The more I focused, the more my head began to hurt. I leaned back on the bed. Maybe I was pushing too hard. Still, I had learned a lot.

Later, it was time for dinner. It was bread and soup. The bread was a bit hard, and the soup lacked seasoning, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. So I didn't mind.

That night, I went to sleep. The next morning, I went to the guild's training area to test some of the magic I remembered. But it was too small and might get destroyed, so I went into the forest.

In a clear space, I began testing magic: Fire Storm, Water Storm, Water Cutter, Fire Wall, Fire Tornado, Tornado, Sand Prison, Fly, Black Flames, Ice Prison… I could cast them all without a chant.

There were many more I wanted to try, but I feared they might destroy the surroundings. Some, like Time Prison, Time Bomb, and Space Disruption, were too dangerous to test casually.

While experimenting, I discovered I could recreate things from my past life—items I had built or used often. I even considered summoning monsters I had controlled before, but left that for later.

The first item I summoned was a sword I had forged in my past life—a blade that could cut through space and time. It could slice through anything I willed.

I also noticed something strange: my body felt like it was changing… rapidly. I didn't know why, but I had a strong feeling something inside me was awakening.

Meanwhile, in a white space, two voices spoke:

"Are you sure about doing that?"

"Doing what?"

"Giving him the chance to live. He should have been annihilated the moment he awakened."

"And why should I have done that?"

"Don't you remember what he did?"

"He won't remember easily. And besides, it wasn't his fault to begin with. I couldn't stop it—his body built itself. It wasn't my doing. His power is returning… but it will take time. I don't think that incident will happen again."

"Unless we interfere again…"

"Exactly. So I'd prefer you all stay out of it."
