The blinding light engulfed everything, tearing through the very fabric of space and time. For a moment, Kael thought he might have been transported somewhere else entirely—his body felt weightless, his senses scrambling to make sense of the storm of colors and sound that filled his vision. The pressure around him intensified, like invisible hands tightening around his chest.
Then, just as suddenly as it had come, the light faded. Kael blinked rapidly, trying to adjust to the sudden return of the world around him.
Maya's voice cut through the haze. "Kael... are you okay?"
He swallowed hard, his throat dry. The air around him felt thick, as if the very molecules were alive, vibrating with an unnatural energy. His legs wobbled, but he managed to stand. His hands were still clutching the core, now dimmed but still emitting a soft pulse of power.
"What the hell just happened?" Kael murmured, his eyes scanning their surroundings.
They were no longer standing on the moon's surface. Instead, they found themselves in a vast expanse of dark void, stretched out before them like an endless abyss. Stars blinked in and out of existence, their light flickering as if caught in some cosmic storm. There was no ground beneath their feet, only the sensation of floating in an endless sea of darkness.
"I don't know," Maya said, her voice tinged with disbelief. She too was scanning the area, her body tense, alert. "This... doesn't look like the universe we were in. It's like we've crossed into another reality."
Kael nodded slowly, piecing it together. The core had triggered something—something beyond his understanding. They had shattered the anomaly, but in doing so, they had opened a rift to something far more dangerous. Something he wasn't ready for.
A loud crack echoed from the distance, and a ripple of energy shot through the void, distorting the very space around them. Kael instinctively reached for his weapon, but there was no time to react.
From the rift, something emerged. It wasn't the creature they had fought before, but something far worse. It was a massive, twisting mass of energy and shadow, a grotesque amalgamation of forms that seemed to flicker in and out of existence. It moved with purpose, its presence warping the air itself, bending reality around it.
Kael's heart skipped a beat.
"Maya... we're not alone here," he whispered, his voice hoarse. His mind was racing, trying to make sense of the impossible situation.
The being paused, its attention locking onto them. Its eyes—if they could even be called eyes—burned with an ancient malice, a hunger that seemed to stretch beyond time itself. The universe was watching them, and it did not seem pleased.
"This is bad," Maya said, her voice steady but her eyes wide. She raised her blade, preparing for whatever came next. "Whatever that thing is, it's here because of us."
The being moved again, faster this time, as if propelled by an invisible force. Kael reacted instinctively, diving to the side as the creature lunged at him, its massive form enveloping the space with a suffocating darkness. It was too fast—there was no escaping it.
But then something happened. The anomaly that had brought them here—its energy—began to resonate with Kael. It was as if the rift had bonded with him, attuned to his presence. He could feel the raw, unfiltered power surging through him, his body absorbing it, becoming one with the void itself.
He wasn't sure how or why, but he knew he had no choice.
"Stay back!" Kael shouted to Maya. The words felt foreign on his tongue, as if they were coming from someone else. He raised his hand, extending it toward the creature, and in that instant, the air around him vibrated, warping with the same energy he had felt earlier.
The creature screeched in pain, recoiling from the wave of energy that exploded from Kael's outstretched hand. It stumbled back, the distortion in the air shuddering, but it quickly regained its footing, its eyes narrowing.
"It's not enough," Kael muttered. "We need to end this."
Maya's voice came through the haze. "Kael, there's something else... something behind it."
He turned, following her gaze, and saw it—a rift, far larger than the one they had created, beginning to open in the distance. From within it, an even darker force poured out, a shadow so deep it seemed to swallow the stars themselves.
The true enemy was still coming.
"Dammit," Kael growled, his fists clenched. The being they faced now was just a herald—a messenger. And the true threat was approaching fast.
Maya stepped forward, her eyes locked on Kael. "We can't fight this alone. We need to—"
Before she could finish, a booming voice echoed through the void, vibrating the very space around them.
"Fools... You should never have come here."
The darkness around them seemed to expand, pushing against Kael's body, threatening to crush him under its weight. The world around him blurred, the edges of reality distorting in an unimaginable way.
Kael took a deep breath, forcing his mind to stay focused. He wasn't about to give in—not yet. Not when everything was on the line.
With renewed determination, he reached into the rift of energy that had bound itself to him. It felt like holding the threads of the universe itself—powerful, unpredictable, and deadly.
"I'm not finished yet," Kael said through gritted teeth.
The force of the darkness crashed against him again, but this time, he stood his ground. With a roar, Kael unleashed the full extent of the energy he had been drawing in. It exploded outward in a pulse of sheer force, shattering the surrounding darkness and sending shockwaves rippling through the void.
The creature howled in pain, its form disintegrating as the pulse tore through it. But the true enemy, the one behind the rift, was still coming.
"We need to find a way out of here!" Maya shouted, pulling Kael's attention back to her.
He nodded grimly. There was no escape yet—not until they stopped whatever was coming.
To be continued...
