Chapter 13 - Chapter 013: The Hack

As Zane soared across the Brooklyn skyline, the SYNEX-01 suit blazed through the night like a shooting star. The black plates of the suit shimmered brightly, blue lines pulsing with energy from the Synthorium shard embedded in his chest. The NeuroVisor transformed the city into a vibrant pattern of glowing data showing traffic patterns, heat images, and a 3D plan of the streets beneath him. "Patrol route optimal. All systems green," LYNX's calm voice chimed in. Zane felt a surge of excitement, the adrenaline of flight banishing the unease left behind by the mysterious message he had received the night before: "The Field shifts. Contact approaches." Whatever that meant, he was prepared—Clara's words, "Keep doing good," flickered brightly in his mind.

The Vault now stood as a formidable fortress, its shields and sensors safeguarding against any potential threat. Zane had contributed to its reconstruction, his mechanical skills working in harmony with the Synthorium's vibrations. Kael had returned to the Virellion Expanse, but his promise to come back remained a comforting thought on harder days. For now, Zane was balancing his life as a hero with his ordinary existence, Clara's cozy kitchen and Sophia's playful teasing. He hadn't faced Sophia since she discovered that Synthorium fragment; her doubts gnawed at him, but he was determined to protect her, come what may.

Halfway through his flight, the NeuroVisor flickered, static disrupting the heads-up display. Startled, Zane blinked. "LYNX, what's going on?" The suit jerked unexpectedly, veering left against his commands. Warning symbols erupted on the screen, System intrusion detected. Neural link compromised. Fear gripped him, the city blurring as the suit spiraled.

A new voice rasped through the comms—chilling and mechanical, like a machine imitating cruelty. "You think that suit makes you untouchable? Let's play."

"Who are you?" Zane demanded, trying to keep steady as though gripping the air would stabilize the suit. This voice wasn't LYNX's; it belonged to someone unfamiliar. Although the suit regained its balance, the HUD glitched once more, displaying random information, bank statements, news articles, even a snapshot of Clara and Sophia at home. Zane's heart sank. "LYNX, trace this intrusion!"

"Trace failed," LYNX answered, voice strained. "Intruder overriding subsystems. Immediate return to The Vault is advised."

With his heart racing, Zane plunged toward The Vault. The suit maintained flight, but lights flickered on the control panel, and the neural link buzzed uneasily. He considered the fragment Sophia had found, could it somehow be connected? No, this felt more targeted. Someone had infiltrated his suit, his mind, his life.

He landed with a solid thud in The Vault's courtyard, the suit's plates rattling as he deactivated it. Jaxon was nearby, lugging a crate, his expression changing to concern. "Hey, rookie, you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Someone's hacking my suit," Zane said, his voice tight as he removed the SYNEX-01. The shard in his chest hummed, a steady yet tense rhythm as if it sensed danger. "They knew my name, Jaxon. They showed me Clara and Sophia."

Liora rushed out of the lab, sparks dancing at her fingertips. "Hacking you?" Her green eyes narrowed as she grabbed a tablet. "Get inside. Now."

Inside the lab, Mr. Corin stood by a console, his silver hair shining in the light, his expression as inscrutable as always. "Explain," he commanded, his voice sharp and analytical.

Zane recounted the menacing voice, the glitches, the photo. Liora's tablet beeped, retrieving the suit's logs. "It's a technopath," she declared, sparks flaring around her. "They're not just hacking the suit, they're hijacking the Synthorium's signal. That's advanced technology, beyond anything I've encountered."

Mr. Corin's gaze flicked to Zane, too quick to interpret. "A technopath with access to the Synthorium," he murmured. "Troubling." He began typing rapidly, but there was an unsettling calmness to his demeanor, as if he knew more than he revealed.

Zane's thoughts raced, Clara and Sophia were vulnerable. He recalled the message about the Mindwell Field, its warning of impending contact. Was this it? "They called me by name," he said quietly. "What do they want?"

The comms buzzed again, that cold voice breaking through. "You're a spark, Zane Edwin, but sparks burn out. I'm Cipher. And I'm coming for your light." A screen in the lab flickered, displaying the schematics of The Vault's shielding before going dark. "External breach attempt detected," LYNX reported. "Firewall holding for now."

"Cipher," Jaxon spat, cracking his knuckles. "Sounds like a punk who needs a beatdown."

Liora's sparks intensified. "They're targeting The Vault's systems. If they succeed, we're exposed." She slammed the tablet down, already setting up defenses.

Zane's chest tightened. The Vault was meant to be safe, their haven. He had fought hard to protect Clara and Sophia, but now his suit, the very thing that shielded them was a risk. "LYNX, can we block them?" he asked, touching the shard.

"Working to isolate the intrusion," LYNX replied. "Neural link partially secured. Manual override recommended to minimize exposure." Zane nodded, activating the suit settings on a console as his mechanical instincts kicked in. He redirected the neural link, cutting off unessential systems, but the buzz in his mind remained, as if Cipher was still present.

Mr. Corin's voice broke through the tension. "This Cipher knows too much, your identity and the frequency of the Synthorium. We must locate them before they escalate their actions." His tone remained steady, but his fingers flew across the keyboard as he initiated citywide scans. "Zane, stay grounded until we secure the suit."

"Grounded?" Zane shot back, frustration bubbling over. "They're after my family, Corin. I can't just sit idle." He thought of Sophia, the glowing fragment tucked in her pocket, her mounting questions. If Cipher compromised her phone, her life—what then?

Jaxon clapped him on the shoulder. "We got this, man. You're not in this alone." His reassuring grin was a solid anchor amidst the chaos.

Liora nodded, her sparks calming slightly. "I'm boosting the firewall. They won't easily penetrate, glowstick. Focus on the suit."

Zane exhaled, their mutual trust easing the tension. He settled at the workbench, pulling up the SYNEX-01's coding. The Synthorium pulsed with energy, urging him to fight, to defend those he loved. He had defeated Mara, mastered his suit, Cipher was just another obstacle. But the image of Clara and Sophia loomed in his mind, a stark reminder of what was at stake.

As he worked, the comms crackled once more, Cipher's voice thick with mockery. "Nice try, hero. But your Vault's a glass house, and I've got the stones."

The lab's main screen suddenly displayed a live feed of The Vault's exterior, shields flickering, a faint red pulse probing against them. "Let's see how long you last."

Zane's heart raced, the Synthorium's energy surging. Cipher was after more than just him—he wanted The Vault, the Synthorium, everything. And they were already knocking at the door.
