Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Why is the XP System Full of Goblins? No, there are Tentacles and Orcs too!

Chapter 17: Why is the XP System Full of Goblins? No, there are Tentacles and Orcs too!

Holding a bowl and slurping down his Instant Noodles, Hayato planned to open the second Card Pack, the SR-Rank Card Pack.

Compared to the R-Rank Card Pack, which was better than nothing, the quality of the SR-Rank Card Pack was much higher. After all, even the guaranteed pull was five SR-Rank Cards. Hayato guessed that the Achievement corresponding to this SR-Rank Card Pack might be something like a "Beginner's Benefit," as it only required Dueling with Mutou Yuugi, without even a win-loss condition, making it almost effortless.

[You have opened an SR Grade Card Pack. Congratulations on obtaining the following Cards:

Goblin Attack Force, Goblin Decoy Squad, Goblin Thief, Goblin Feinting Squad, Goblin Thief]

Did he just poke a goblin nest?!

Hayato hadn't expected too much, even a Card like "Command Knight" would have been fine, as it was one of the famous Warrior Type monsters. But why were all the Cards he pulled from this SR-Rank Card Pack from the Goblin Series?

It wasn't that he disliked the Cards' strength. Frankly speaking,

the Goblin Series Cards were the best examples of trading appearance for power. Whether it was the 2300 ATK of [Goblin Attack Force] or the ability of [Goblin Decoy Squad] to Draw a Card after inflicting damage, they were quite good. [Goblin Thief] also had the effect of inflicting 500 Effect Damage and recovering 500 Life Points, which was great for finishing off opponents or surviving.

However, among the SR Grade Cards, what Hayato wanted most was actually the Normal Monster Fusion Monster, [Gaia the Dragon Champion].

Yes, although it was a Normal Monster with no effects whatsoever, and its ATK was only a mere 300 points higher than one of its Materials, [Gaia The Fierce Knight], it was still classified as SR Grade, higher than [Gaia The Fierce Knight] and [Curse of Dragon]. If he wanted to specifically purchase this Card, the required DP Points were a staggering 3000 points, which was even enough to complete a thirty-pull and clear out a box of Basic Card Packs.

Due to the previous Achievement settlement, Hayato's current remaining DP Points were [1100 + 1500 = 2600], still 400 points short of the amount needed for a specific purchase. As for [Gaia the Dragon Champion] being priced as SR Grade, Hayato guessed it was likely because one of the core support Cards for the [Gaia] Deck, [Spiral Spear Strike], was based on [Gaia the Dragon Champion].

It was a well-known fact in Hayato's previous life that "KONAMI," the publisher of "Yu-Gi-Oh!" Cards, loved to play on memes. Many Physical Cards that never appeared in the Anime adopted some gags from the Anime. The most famous among these was undoubtedly [Crescent Blade], which was a Neta of Yugi's classic maneuver (or rather, verbal attack) in the Anime.

The [Spiral Spear Strike] Card, which is included in [Gaia] Decks, was also a meme from the Anime. Even the Card's name itself came from the name of [Gaia]'s attack move in the Anime.

[Spiral Spear Strike] has two effects: one is to grant [Gaia] Cards the ability to pierce defense, and the second is that after inflicting damage through the first effect, you can activate an effect similar to [Card of Sanctity] – Draw two Cards and then discard one. And as everyone knows, any Card that can gain Card Advantage is a good Card.

Finishing the last bit of soup from his Instant Noodles in one gulp, Hayato began to use his last R-Rank Select Card Coupon. This item was different from the previous Card Packs. The latter randomly selected a few Cards from the vast Card Pool (although Hayato suspected this "randomness" definitely had some shady dealings), while the former gave the power of selection to Hayato.

He could freely choose any R Grade Card from the vast Card Pool. Looking at the thousands of Cards densely packed on the screen before him, Hayato couldn't help but take a deep breath. Not only were there Cards from the DM era where Hayato was currently, but even future Cards appeared before his eyes. As long as the Card's effect or Category didn't exceed the era, he could freely choose one to add to his Deck.

"It's really dazzling. Is 'Invoked Mechaba' really R Grade? And there's 'Raidraptor' too, even 'Infernoid'." With infinite hesitation, Hayato subconsciously bit his fingernails, thinking and struggling. He wanted every single Card, but he could only choose one.

After browsing the almost infinite Card Pool for a long time, Hayato finally let out a long sigh and clicked into the Filter Function that came with the Card Pool.

[Category - Spell Card]

[Keyword - Destroy]

Although it was a pity, Hayato knew that the optimal choice at this moment was to select Cards that would be most helpful to his Deck, as this would maximize his strength. With sufficient strength, he could obtain these tempting Cards later.

The largest component of Hayato's current Deck was still a large number of Normal Monsters. Even after supplementing at Kame Game Shop, the number of Spell Cards was still too few. He wanted to increase the proportion of Spell Cards in his Deck as much as possible. At the same time, the biggest problem he currently faced was the lack of Cards with Destroy effects. If he encountered a mindless Shield like [Millennium Shield], he would be completely helpless.

With the Filter Function enabled, the vast Card Pool quickly shrank, but there was still a large selection of Cards. Hayato began to carefully choose from them. Before long, he found a suitable Card.

"This Card is...?" Looking at the three figures on the Card, Hayato didn't expect this Card to also be counted in the "Destroy" Category. However, the description of its effect did contain the word "Destroy." "Interesting, things are getting fun."

It was another bright and sunny morning. Hayato Kobayashi, who was home alone but still obediently didn't stay up late, left for School early. After all, only children would stay up all night without considering the consequences. Having experienced it once, Hayato didn't want his beautiful hair to become bald.

Waiting at the Bus Stop, he caught the Bus heading to School. While riding the Bus, Hayato overheard the conversation between two female students from the same school sitting together:

"Ah, such bad luck. The magazine says my current Zodiac Sign's Fortune is really bad, and of all days, we have a pop quiz today."

The girl speaking was fashionably dressed and sounded quite believing in "Zodiac Signs" and "Fortune." There were people like this all over the world, but Zodiac Signs were really a matter of opinion, after all, their essence was actually the same as an Almanac. Depending on the printing manufacturer, the Almanac's auspicious and inauspicious days would differ, and the same Zodiac Sign interpreted by different people would also have different effects.

"Should I go see the famous Prophet at School, Kitsune Kura, and get my Fortune told?"

Her companion pushed up the glasses sliding down her nose and calmly said, "Compared to those unscientific things, Tsuruya, wouldn't it be better to focus more on the upcoming quiz right in front of you?"

"That's true," the first girl sighed, noticing her companion was reading a Newspaper. "Even the way you read the Newspaper is as old-fashioned as my dad, Nagato. Is there any big news recently? But it's probably just some boring celebrity cheating scandal again—"

"It seems a Murderer has escaped from prison."

"Adzuki bean!?"

This should be the Protagonist's second Duel, but it's just a transitional Duel, meant to give the Protagonist a taste. It won't be a very intense Duel, and it can even end within two chapters. It's probably a "Curb-stomp Match" that starts in the chapter after next and ends in the chapter after the chapter after next.

Author's Note:

The Protagonist's current Card strength, while still a distance from Seto Kaiba with his Three Blue-Eyes and Yugi using Grandpa's Cards, is only capable of Curb-stomp Matches against others. However, this Duel has a purpose, which I will explain later.

If I manage two chapters a day, the times will be one chapter at 12:00 and one at 18:00. This is tentative. If you have any opinions, feel free to leave chapter comments or inter-chapter posts, preferably constructive suggestions (no constructive 'WTF' allowed). The author often lurks in the comment section, but unfortunately, the water in our book's comment section is a bit shallow.

That's all. Please recommend, collect, and comment~
