Chapter 12 - Is That A Promise?

"How is someone who is barely an adult supposed to help me with my problem?" Miss Anderson asked, and Benjamin was silent for a moment, which sadly was a moment too long.

"Please don't listen to this child, Miss Anderson. Punks like him will say whatever they can just to get released, but once they're free, they go right back to the same idiotic activities that got them here in the first place. And this one is no different," Captain James said as he glared at Benjamin with disdain-filled eyes.

"I think you're right, Captain. I can't believe I wasted my time on such childish lies and antics. Let's go. I have more important things to do with my time", Miss Anderson said, and started walking away.

Captain James looked at the two officers who had taken Benjamin out of his cell and he told them to take Benjamin back before he lost his temper.

The two officers grabbed Benjamin and were about to take him back to his cell when, in a last-ditch attempt at convincing Miss Anderson, Benjamin exclaimed "If I'm unable to do what I said I can, then you can chop off my limbs and throw me in the deepest darkest hole you can find!"

Miss Anderson stopped in her tracks and looked at the desperate young man.

"Is that a promise?" She asked.

"It's over for me if I can't get out of here right now, so yeah, it's a promise" Benjamin replied.

The reason why Benjamin was so desperate to leave with Miss Anderson, besides the fact that it was the only way to accomplish the mission and avoid the punishment of lobotomy if he failed, was because of what the aftermath of the lobotomy would be.

Given that the brain disorder was meant to last a full twenty-four hours, the officers would believe that he had truly lost his mind and would send him to a mental institution better equipped to handle him.

If movies were anything to go by when it came to mental institutions, leaving on your own after being admitted was impossible to do. There would be no way to prove you weren't insane if those in charge had already decided you were, and every attempt to do so would only reinforce their belief.

The longer Benjamin spends there trying to prove his sanity, the more his mind will unravel—until, eventually, he loses it, like a self-fulfilling prophecy, and that will finally mean the end of him.

If he couldn't leave with Miss Anderson, then it would be over for him and Benjamin couldn't have that.

"Do we have a deal?" Benjamin asked, hoping he had done enough to convince the woman.

Miss Anderson groaned skeptically. She had no reason to trust Benjamin, yet something in her guts told her to give him the benefit of the doubt.

"Captain," she said, and Captain James faced her.

"Please grant me custody of this young man for the next few hours. I promise that he won't escape my sight" she said.

"Of course, Miss Anderson. After all the donations this precinct has received from your family, this is the least I can do. But, I feel like I should warn you to be careful with punks like him. They tend to be very elusive" Captain James said.

"Don't worry, Captain. I know how to take care of myself, and I'll make sure he knows not to try anything stupid," Miss Anderson assured.

"Okay," Captain James nodded.

He looked at the two officers behind Benjamin and instructed them to take him and follow him and Miss Anderson to the exit.

The two officers nodded in understanding.

"Alright Benjamin, we have a deal. But just know that the moment I feel like you are messing with me is the moment things stop looking good for you" Miss Anderson threatened.

"I understand" Benjamin nodded.

"Alright then. Let's go see my father" Miss Anderson said, and was ready to continue her exit.

"Your hands," the female officer who took Benjamin out of his cell said as she held a pair of handcuffs in front of him.

"Do we have to do this? I promise that I won't run away or do anything stupid", Benjamin said, not wanting to be handcuffed.

"If you're coming with me then those cuffs have to be on you at all times," Miss Anderson said.

Having no choice, Benjamin groaned and extended his hands to the Officer, who then cuffed him.

"Alright, you're good to go now," the female officer said, then they all headed to the exit.

Benjamin looked at the countdown timer from the system and saw how much time he had left.

Four hours and forty-two minutes.

He didn't know how far Miss Anderson's home was, so he just hoped it wasn't too far so that he could get this done before the time ran out.

Speaking of time running out, Benjamin noticed that although he was already out of the holding cell and was about to leave with Miss Anderson, the mission still wasn't accomplished.

The mission—to escape captivity—applied to all forms of captivity. So, even though he was out of the holding cell, he still wasn't truly free. Now, he was under Miss Anderson's control, and if he didn't hold up his end of the deal, she would send him to an even worse prison.

The only way he could truly complete the mission was to help save her father from whatever ailment was afflicting him.

The question now was: could he really do it?

Only time will tell.

They went outside the police station and Benjamin saw a beautiful Black Rolls-Royce Phantom parked by the side of the road.

He had seen the same car when he first arrived at the police station, but he paid no mind because he had other things to worry about, plus he didn't know who it belonged to.

Just then, the chauffeur came out of the car and got ready to open the door for Miss Anderson, but he became confused when he saw police officers escorting a young man in handcuffs.

"We'll be carrying one more person, Daniel," Miss Anderson said to the chauffeur.

"Who, Miss Anderson?" Daniel asked.

"Him" Miss Anderson gestured at Benjamin and Daniel looked at him.

Saying the chauffeur was unimpressed would be an understatement as what he really felt was worry, seeing as Benjamin was in handcuffs.

Why did Miss Anderson want a prisoner to get in the car with them? He wondered but kept it to himself as he couldn't go against his boss's wishes.

"Alright, Miss Anderson" Daniel bowed, then he went to open the door for them.

"Get in," Miss Anderson said to Benjamin.

Benjamin followed the instructions and got into the back seat.

A few seconds later, Daniel opened the other back door for Miss Anderson, who got in and sat beside Benjamin.

"Are you comfortable?" She asked.

"As comfortable as I can be" replied Benjamin, who didn't know how to sit in such a luxurious vehicle.

"Good" Miss Anderson said, then looked at Daniel who had just entered the driver's seat.

"Where to, Miss Anderson?" Daniel asked.

"The family mansion. Take us to see my father" She said and Daniel ignited the engine, then drove off.
