Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Clues

After Xu Mingyuan's downfall, Jiangcheng City seemed to have returned to calm on the surface. People on the streets and in the alleys were discussing the downfall of corrupt officials, but they were unaware that a greater undercurrent was brewing. Chen Mo stood in front of Li Ran's tomb, his hand stroking the memory card he had brought out from the "Underground Palace". Although the information about the "Deep Sea Project" on it was detailed, it always made him feel that the most crucial link was missing.

Back home, Chen Mo locked himself in the study and analyzed the contents of the storage card word by word. At three o 'clock in the morning, the cold light of the computer screen shone on his bloodshot eyes. Suddenly, a strange string of digital codes caught his attention. These codes are scattered in the remarks column of the capital flow, seemingly without any pattern. However, after being converted to hexadecimal, they reveal a coordinate - 30.52° north latitude, 114.36° east longitude.

Chen Mo immediately pulled up the map, and the coordinates pointed to an abandoned nuclear power plant on the outskirts of Jiangcheng. His heart tightened and he was about to contact Zhao Jianfeng when his phone rang first. The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number. After the call was connected, a voice-altered voice came through: "Officer Chen, don't waste your effort. There are some secrets that you can't bear." Before Chen Mo could ask further, the phone had already hung up.

This phone call, on the contrary, kindled Chen Mo's fighting spirit. He didn't tell Zhao Jianfeng and drove alone to the abandoned nuclear power plant. The road in the dead of night was terrifyingly silent. The trees on both sides, illuminated by the car headlights, looked like monsters with bared teeth and claws. When the outline of the nuclear power plant came into view, Chen Mo noticed that the factory area, which should have been abandoned, had a few scattered lights flickering.

He parked his car far away and sneaked into the factory area under the cover of night. A gap was artificially cut in the wire mesh on the fence, and fresh tire marks were still remaining on the ground. Following the traces, Chen Mo arrived in front of a huge cooling tower. The iron door at the bottom of the tower was slightly ajar, and the faint rumble of machinery could be heard.

Carefully pushing open the door, a damp and musty smell hit me in the face. Chen Mo turned on the miniature flashlight. Where the beam of light reached, the walls were covered with strange symbols and marks, as if they were some kind of encrypted language. He walked down the stairs. With each step, he could feel the drop in temperature. When he reached the third basement floor, the scene before him shocked him so much that he couldn't speak.

In the vast space, dozens of huge refrigerated cabinets are neatly arranged. Each cabinet contains sealed metal cans, with conspicuous biological hazard signs printed on them. Chen Mo moved closer to take a look and found that the inside of the jar seemed to contain some kind of pale green liquid, which was emitting a strange fluorescence under the cold light. In the corner of the room, he also discovered several high-end gene sequencers and a filing cabinet marked "Top Secret Archives of the Deep Sea Project".

Just as Chen Mo was about to open the filing cabinet, footsteps suddenly came from behind him. He quickly hid behind the refrigerated cabinet and saw several people in chemical protective suits come in. They were pushing a cart loaded with more metal cans and chatting in a foreign language as they walked. Chen Mo carefully examined and found that they were speaking Russian. One of them mentioned key words such as "weaponization" and "final experiment".

After these people left, Chen Mo came out of his hiding place and tried to open the filing cabinet, only to find that a password was needed. He remembered the strange symbol on the wall and began to try to decipher it. After much effort, he finally found a possible combination of numbers. When he entered the password, his heart almost jumped out of his chest.

With a "click", the filing cabinet opened. Chen Mo quickly flipped through the documents inside, and the more he looked, the more solemn his expression became. It turns out that the "Deep Sea Project" is far more than a simple power-for-money deal and drug smuggling. At its core, it is a secret biological weapons research and development program. Foreign forces colluded with corrupt domestic officials and used abandoned nuclear power plants as cover, attempting to develop a genetic weapon capable of targeted attacks on specific groups of people.

Chen Mo took out his mobile phone and began to photograph the contents of the documents. Just then, a shrill alarm suddenly rang out throughout the basement, and the red lights flickered wildly. Realizing that he had been discovered, he quickly stuffed his mobile phone into his pocket and ran towards the exit at full speed. However, when he ran to the staircase entrance, he found that the way had been blocked by a group of fully armed mercenaries.

Officer Chen, we have been waiting for you for a long time. The leading mercenary sneered and pointed his gun at Chen Mo's forehead. At the critical moment, a series of intense gunshots came from above. Zhao Jianfeng led a team of special police officers to rush down. It turned out that Zhao Jianfeng noticed Chen Mo's abnormality and followed him secretly.

In the fierce exchange of fire, Chen Mo and Zhao Jianfeng successfully broke through the siege, but those refrigerators and filing cabinets were blown up in the chaos. When they returned again, all that was left was a mess on the ground. Chen Mo gazed at the ruins and clenched his fists. He knew that the forces behind the "Deep Sea Project" were far more powerful than he had imagined, and this battle had only just begun.
