Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Echoes of Destiny

The morning sun bathed Duel Academy in a soft golden hue, the waves of the surrounding sea shimmering gently. The calm belied the turbulence just beneath the surface—both literal and spiritual. Ever since Kaito's duel in the spirit realm, a tension had hung over the campus like an unspoken prophecy.

Classes had resumed, but the students were different now. More focused. More alert. Rumors of ancient spirits and shadow duels had made their rounds, and even those who hadn't witnessed the events firsthand could feel the weight of change.

In Chancellor Sheppard's office, the inner circle gathered once more. Kaito, Jaden, Alexis, Zane, Bastion, and Syrus stood before the aged chancellor, whose usually calm demeanor was edged with unease.

"The spirit realm is restless," Sheppard began. "Your duel, Kaito, didn't just prove your worth. It sent a signal. Forces older than the game itself are stirring."

Bastion stepped forward, a thick binder in his hands. "I've been researching the residual energy left behind after Kaito's duel with Ignis. The readings indicate temporal distortion—something was displaced. Or... released."

Kaito's brow furrowed. "You're saying the duel didn't end something... it started something else?"

"Exactly," Bastion nodded. "A gate was unlocked. And now, dueling spirits we've never encountered before are slipping into our world. Not all of them are hostile, but many are... confused."

Jaden leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "We've fought darkness before. What makes this different?"

Alexis answered quietly, "Because it's not just darkness. It's memory. History. Legacy. Everything that's ever touched a duel is converging now."

Chancellor Sheppard turned to a large screen behind him and pressed a button. A map of Duel Academy and the surrounding islands appeared, overlaid with glowing red dots.

"These are recorded spirit disturbances. They've tripled in the last two weeks. And they're not random. They're circling something—something deep beneath the academy."

Kaito's eyes narrowed. "The sealed chamber."

Zane nodded. "Where the three Sigils were locked away."

Sheppard's gaze was grim. "It may not be enough anymore. We need more than walls and locks. We need guardians."

Syrus blinked. "Guardians like... us?"

"Not just you," Sheppard replied. "There are others—duelists across the world who've experienced similar awakenings. We're going to need to find them. Train them. Unite them."

Kaito's heart beat faster. This was bigger than Duel Academy. Bigger than his legacy. This was global. No—cosmic.

Later that day, Kaito found himself walking through the Obelisk Blue dormitory gardens. It was a rare moment of quiet, and he used it to reflect.

The duel with the First Duelist, the trial by flame with Ignis, the mysterious energy from beneath the academy—all of it had led him here.

But why him? Why now?

He stopped at the edge of a koi pond and stared at his reflection. Behind him, he heard footsteps.

"Still thinking about it, aren't you?" Alexis asked, stepping beside him.

Kaito nodded. "I feel like I'm standing on the edge of something huge. Like the world's about to change again, and I don't know if I'm ready."

She placed a hand on his shoulder. "You don't have to be ready. Just willing. That's what makes you a true duelist."

Before he could answer, his Duel Disk beeped sharply.

An emergency alert.

He tapped the interface, and a hologram appeared: a distress signal from the volcano island south of Duel Academy. The image flickered, showing flames—unnatural ones—rising from the base of the mountain.

A distorted voice crackled through. "Unknown entity—requires assistance—Duel Spirits going berserk—"

Kaito snapped into action. "I'll go. Alone. I can't risk putting anyone else in danger."

"You're not going alone," Jaden's voice said firmly from behind. He, Zane, and Syrus were already gearing up. "We're a team. We face this together."

The group boarded a modified duel transport vehicle, designed to traverse the more dangerous parts of the island. As they neared the volcano, the heat became oppressive, and the air shimmered with energy.

At the crater's edge, they saw it.

A Duel Spirit made entirely of molten rock and magma—**Infernal Colossus – Vulkazar**. Its very presence warped the terrain around it.

"That's not from any known archetype," Bastion whispered.

Kaito stepped forward, Duel Disk activating. "Then I'll show it what it means to face a Blue-Eyes duelist."

The lava creature roared, and the duel began.

The earth shook beneath their feet.

And destiny burned anew.
