Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: Bonds of Bark and Breadth

---

**Heartgrove – Morning**

The morning sun bathed the Heartgrove in hues of amber and gold, filtering through the delicate, glowing leaves of the sacred trees. Elira stretched, still sore from the night spent under the weight of Yuki's watchful gaze. The forest hummed in its usual, eerie rhythm, but there was something different today—a quiet anticipation in the air.

Garron was already up, sharpening his blades with a focused intensity. Lumi, on the other hand, was humming cheerfully as she fiddled with a tiny, glowing rock she'd picked up along the way.

"You know," Garron muttered, eyeing the shimmering light around them, "I'd appreciate a little less weirdness today. The last time I looked at a glowing rock, I ended up nearly being turned into a tree by a possessed vine."

Lumi grinned. "You should try it! It's like bonding with the forest, but without the whole 'death by roots' thing."

"I'm good, thanks." Garron grunted, sharpening the edge of his sword with a vengeance.

Seris sat a little apart, cleaning her gear. Her eyes flicked over to Elira, who had her hands over the spirit-seed again, whispering to it like she was coaxing a plant to bloom.

"You think the forest has something to do with her?" Seris asked quietly.

"Can't say I'm sure, but it's the only thing that makes sense," Garron replied. "Whatever's pulling the strings here, it's using her."

"I don't trust it." Seris' tone was sharp. "And I don't trust her. Not yet."

**Heartgrove – A Short Distance Away**

Yuki stretched out in the center of the grove, his enormous wings casting long shadows across the ground. His form shimmered with ethereal light, his connection to the spirits of the forest strong and unyielding.

Sylvaeria perched nearby, looking down at the humans.

"Do you think she'll stay?" Sylvaeria asked, watching Elira curiously.

Yuki's voice rumbled softly, almost like a whisper on the wind. **"She will stay… for now."**

"And the others?" Sylvaeria quipped. "What about them?"

Yuki glanced toward the humans, his gaze lingering on the one called Seris. **"They'll either fall in line or fall away."**

Sylvaeria chuckled. "You're so *optimistic* for a dragon. But perhaps that's what makes you different."

**"Different… or just older than you think."**

The conversation faded as Yuki's gaze drifted back to Elira, who was slowly approaching the pool, the spirit-seed glowing brighter in her hands. Something ancient stirred in him—a protective instinct, but also one of curiosity.

**Heartgrove – Elira's Connection**

Elira knelt by the pool, holding the seed carefully above the water. The glow deepened, casting rippling shadows on the surface. She whispered softly, her words not in any language, but in a tone that resonated with something deep within the forest.

"I don't know why I'm the one chosen," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "But if this is my path… then I will walk it."

The seed reacted, pulsing in response to her words, and suddenly, the trees seemed to sigh. The winds picked up, and the ground trembled beneath her feet, just slightly. Then, in a flash of light, a vine shot up from the ground, wrapping around her arm before receding back into the earth.

Elira gasped, looking at her arm in awe. "It's… it's recognizing me."

From the edge of the grove, Yuki observed her every move. **"She is bonding with it. The forest does not take kindly to its allies being claimed by outsiders."**

Sylvaeria hovered near his shoulder. "True. But she has something—*something* that the forest respects."

Yuki remained silent. His thoughts were focused on Elira. **"The forest is reacting to her differently… This is no coincidence."**

**Heartgrove – Near the Humans' Camp**

The others watched from a distance, eyes wide as Elira stood, holding the glowing seed.

Garron raised an eyebrow. "Okay. I think we need to talk about what just happened."

Seris, always on edge, had her hand near her sword hilt. "What kind of 'bond' is she making with the forest?"

"I think she's… becoming a part of it." Lumi's eyes glinted with curiosity. "It's like the trees and the spirits are *accepting* her."

"She's not *one* of them," Seris insisted, "and the forest can't just decide that."

Garron put a hand on her arm, calming her. "She might not be one of them, but we don't know what's happening right now. This forest is... different. *He's* different."

---

**Heartgrove – Yuki's Reflection**

Yuki lowered his head, eyes narrowing as he stared at Elira from afar. The wind whispered in his ears, carrying more than just the forest's scent. There was a hint of something darker in the air—a shifting, subtle pressure he couldn't fully place.

**"The winds speak,"** he murmured to himself. **"But they are clouded. This is not merely about the girl. There are forces at play beyond my reach…"**

Sylvaeria floated beside him. "Not to sound ominous, but I have a feeling this is just the beginning, Yuki."

Yuki's eyes flashed. **"I know. I will watch. But I will not be the only one."**
