The Citadel of Ends trembled.
Amina stood frozen as the three shards of the First Ember pulsed in the chests of herself, Kai, and Valec. The fire within each of them was different—hers steady and golden, Valec's deep and storming, and Kai's flickering with wild uncertainty.
"It chose us," she whispered.
"No," Valec said through clenched teeth. "It divided us. This was never meant to happen."
The walls cracked louder now, flameglass falling in molten sheets. Ashar pulled Lumeah back as one of the supports caved in.
"What happens if the Citadel collapses?" Lumeah asked.
Ashar didn't answer. His silence was worse than any prophecy.

Echoes Within
Inside Amina's mind, the Ember shard spoke—not with words, but sensation. A tidal wave of memory and grief. She saw Amariel's rise again—her choice to create life, to defy the Silent Flame that governed balance, and the ultimate cost of her rebellion.
"I must not repeat her mistake," Amina murmured.
Valec was trembling, his eyes silver-lit. The Ember inside him was not kind—it roared like a storm, reminding him of every life he'd taken, every kingdom he'd shattered in darkness.
"I will control it," he swore. "I must."
Kai, however, looked dazed. He was on his knees, gripping the stone floor. The Ember was feeding him something he didn't understand. A truth buried so deep, it clawed at the edge of his sanity.
"I didn't ask for this," he said, voice cracking.
"No one ever does," Lumeah replied softly.

A Fork in Flame
In the center of the collapsing chamber, a new path opened—three tunnels burning into the ground. The Citadel was testing them.
Three choices. Three flames.
Amina turned to the others. "We split."
"What? No!" Ashar said. "That's exactly what the Flame wants."
"Yes," Amina replied. "Because only apart can we understand what we are. And only together, when we return, can we become what we must."
Silence.
Then Valec nodded. "Fine. But if I lose control…"
"You won't," Amina said.
Kai gave no answer. He simply stepped toward the left path and vanished.
---
Path of Wounds – Valec
The tunnel led Valec into a realm of ice and memory. Chains wrapped around pillars. Screams echoed in languages long dead.
And at the heart of the cavern—stood himself.
But younger. Unscarred. Wearing the crown he cast aside a thousand years ago.
"I failed," the younger Valec said.
"I know."
"And you will fail again."
"No. Because this time, I have her."
Valec drew his sword. "And I will not become you."
---
Path of Storms – Kai
Kai's path was wind and illusions. Every wall reflected someone he'd betrayed—his brother, his mentor, his lovers, his own soul.
The Ember pulsed in him erratically.
He fell to his knees, clutching his head.
"You are not the hero," a whisper hissed. "You never were."
Kai's lips trembled.
"I don't need to be the hero," he said. "I just need to stop him."
And he ran—deeper into the storm.
---
Path of Flame – Amina
Amina walked through fire. It did not burn her skin, but it seared her soul.
She saw Amariel again, this time kneeling before the Silent Flame.
"Balance," the Silent Flame said. "Or ruin."
Amina raised her hand.
"No."
"You refuse harmony?"
"I choose hope."
The Silent Flame opened its eye.
And Amina felt the full force of existence press down on her.

Outside – The World Reacts
In the southern continent of Elthen, volcanoes erupted with no warning.
In the ruined city of Kareth, the dead stirred in their graves.
The world was shifting.
And at the Hollow Between Worlds, the Pale King finished his armor—wrought from the bones of fallen gods.
He stepped into the light.
"The Flame will rise," he said. "And I will be its final shadow."
