Chapter 5 - Guerilla warfare

For two weeks, Ceaser and his men waited for Inca and his army to invade the forest.

They had waited for a long time that it seemed like there was no incoming attack until one early morning if the second week, scouts saw Inca and his army entering the forest.

The refugees would settlement was around fifteen miles away from the forest entrance which made keeping Inca away from the vicinity their highest priority .

Incas men comprised of sixty horsemen minus Inca and two hundred and forty foot soldiers marched steadily into the forest in hopes of finishing up the refugees and returning as soon as possible.

But suddenly the music turned grim , three miles into the forest, one of Incas soldiers tripped on a rope causing a massive tree trunk to swing down with force like a battering ram breaking bones and clearing men like bowling balls to bowling pins.

Regardless of the sheer strength of the log , it only managed to kill three men and injured five.

But it was not yet over, as they went further inland they would sometimes be shot at by crossbows which shaved off their numbers little by little as sometimes the shrubbery would deviate the trajectory of the bolts. Still some of the bolts found their selves hitting their mark , injuring and even killing the enemy combatants.

One one occasion as they were trying to use the trees as cover from the crossbows, some of them failed to notice that the soil was a little bit loose more than the rest. By the the time they found out, about ten of them has fell into the hole that had been dug out and had been filled with spikes.

These constant attacks posed both physical and psychological burden on Inca and his soldiers, seeing as they had no time for rest. Sometimes when the soldiers would try to relieve themselves, they would immediately be picked out by crossbow men.

At the moment stress has caused the enemy combatants to lose their bearings as they found themselves lost in the forest.

Soon Ceaser stopped attacking abruptly giving Inca a sense of security. For about three hours till sunset, there was no attack, so Inca seeing how worn out his soldiers were ordered for camp to be made .

Within the hour tents were raised and sentries were posted outside to watch out for attackers.

They were aware that the refugees would attack at any moment but still , knowledge of an attack and defense against said attack are two different things.

As soon as it was dark and the half moon rose, stage two of the was underway.

Ceaser and the men carried small jars filled with alcohol gotten from the cassava mixed with oil gotten from processing palm fruits.

The jars had rags placed in them to produce a crude Molotov cocktail. Forty men who knew that their lives was reliant on the success of the mission crept slowly through the bushes until they came close the enemy camp.

Five guards were stationed outside camp so five of Ceasers soldiers guards separated from the group and approached slowly and quietly towards the guards and just like clockwork before the guard could notice anything maybe due to exhaustion, they had their throats were slit.

The rest rushed forward quickly not minding that they would rouse the enemy soldiers from their sleep as it was already too late for them . They then lit up the jars and threw them into the tents and sleeping areas in the camp.

The result was devastating as fire spread throughout the camp latching onto any flamable material.

" Kill any who tries to resist and capture the rest." Ceaser shouted as his men rushed into camp exchanging blows with the disorganized enemy combatants but not for long as sixty soldiers including Inca and Lord Mel surrendered to Ceaser and were soon transported back to the refuge camp that same night.

After getting some rest Ceaser walked over to where the prisoners were being held. There he saw Inca throwing a fit like a spoilt brat.

" Who is the leader of this rabble,

Do you know who I am, "

" Calm yourself boy, do you not realize that you stand before men." Ceaser shouted at Inca who turned to face him surprised.

Clearly Ceaser was the youngest person among them all so calling Inca 'boy' was clearly a ploy to humiliate or anger him which clearly worked.

" You dare insult me you rebel scum , I will have your head for....."

Before he could continue his sentence Ceaser punched him hard in the gut causing Inca to fall and clutch his stomach in pain, vomiting bile on the floor.

" Let me make something clear young Lord ," Ceaser said looking down at him like a lion when it meets a helpless rabbit, " As of this moment, you speak when spoken to, you answer only to me is that clear."

Inca still looked up from the floor with a bit of defiance but a kick to the ribs immediately reset his brain.

" So tell me young Lord , where are you from?" Ceaser asked Inca who was still reeling in pain.

" The emperor has placed me over the town of Patagonia to mine ore for the Blackthorn empire." He replied.

" And pray tell how many slaves , inhabitants and soldiers do you have stationed in this town?."

" There should be about , two thousand mining slaves , five hundred regular slaves , three thousand serfs and one hundred remaining soldiers."

" Good, very good, feed the prisoners, I have plans for them." Ceaser said before leaving the area.

Alfred and the other knights immediately followed in tow .

" What do you plan on doing now Ceaser?" Alfred asked.

" Surely you have a plan after capturing a noble of the Blackthorn empire?" Another knights chipped in.

Ceaser then stopped in his tracks before turning to look them in their eyes before replying, " Do you not realize what I am about to do at the moment, we are going to be claiming a town for ourselves."
