Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Threads of Mastery

The morning sun broke over the eastern hills, casting golden light across Greystone's battered yet resolute walls. Inside the keep, Lucas sat at his study desk surrounded by a small mountain of scrolls, tomes, and ancient bindings. Dust motes danced in the air as he leafed through yet another yellowed page, Zephyra perched on the windowsill, and Umbra curled at the foot of the table.

Elira stood near the bookcase, scanning titles with a finger trailing along spines. Kaela leaned against the wall, arms crossed, her eyes flickering with both amusement and curiosity.

"You really think you can find a way to counter the Tide's summoning suppression?" Kaela asked, one eyebrow raised.

Lucas didn't look up. "We don't have a choice. If their presence nullifies beast summons, then we're crippled before the battle even begins."

Elira turned. "You said your skill—Identify—was acting strange around relics. Maybe it can help with deciphering old techniques too?"

Lucas paused, then slowly nodded. He focused on a nearby scroll, the system chimed in his mind.

DING! [Skill Usage Detected: Identify]

[Subject: Arcane Scroll of Flame Whip]

[Result: Usable Skill - Flame Whip (Tier 1)]

[Would you like to learn this skill? Y/N]

Lucas blinked. "Wait... I can learn this?"

He pressed "Yes" in his mind.

DING!

[Skill Acquired: Flame Whip (Tier 1)]

[Beast Affinity boosted: Minor Arcane Imprinting]

Zephyra chirped curiously. Elira leaned in. "Did you just..."

Lucas grinned. "I can learn skills from scrolls. But more than that—" He picked up another scroll and activated Identify again.

DING!

[Skill Usage Detected: Identify]

[Subject: Technique Scroll - Wind Step]

[Result: Usable Skill - Wind Step (Tier 1)]

[Would you like to learn this skill? Y/N]

He confirmed. The knowledge flowed into him like a stream into a basin—smooth, sudden, complete.

Kaela pushed off the wall. "You're saying your skill lets you absorb knowledge like breathing?"

Lucas nodded. "That, and more. I can teach them too—if you're in my party."

He turned to Elira, concentrating.

DING!

[Party Member: Elira]

[Skill Transfer: Wind Step (Tier 1) - Available]

[Initiate Transfer? Y/N]

He confirmed.

Elira gasped and steadied herself. Her eyes widened. "I can feel it… I know how to move. Like wind."

Kaela stepped forward, impressed. "Show me."

Lucas nodded. "You'll have to join my party."

She hesitated. Then she nodded once.

DING!

[Kaela has joined your party.]

[Status Access: Enabled]

Suddenly, the air shifted.

DING!

{Angel}: "Lucas, you've uncovered another facet of the system. Your affinity with skill transference and knowledge is evolving."

Lucas turned toward the invisible voice. "Angel?"

{Angel}: "You now have access to the function: Arcane Mentorship. You may absorb skills through Identify and pass them on to party members at will. To prepare for the war ahead, I recommend intensive training."

The windows rattled as a surge of arcane energy pulsed through the room. Kaela and Elira instinctively reached for their weapons, but Lucas raised a hand.

{Angel}: "I will assist with this training directly. Kaela, Elira—step outside."

The three made their way to the courtyard. The training ground shimmered, warped by magic. Angel's projection materialized above, her wings casting a soft glow.

"Welcome," she said. "To the Arcane Crucible."

The sky shimmered, locking them in a dome of illusion and resistance. Targets appeared—phantom Tide scouts, magic traps, and elemental beasts.

Lucas drew his blade, infused it with Flame Whip, and struck a decoy Tide creature. Fire lashed out and curved mid-air.

Kaela summoned her beast—Thunder Fang growled, though the projection flickered. It was weak.

"Even in this space, summon suppression lingers," Angel noted.

Lucas gritted his teeth. "Then we fight without them."

Kaela charged into a wave of spectral apes, her claws glowing with lightning. Elira activated Wind Step, dancing through enemy illusions and sending out pinpoint arrows of light.

Lucas triggered Flame Whip, swung wide, and incinerated three enemies.

They moved like a single organism, training through the grind of sweat and arcane resistance. Hours passed.

Lucas collapsed to a knee, panting. Elira was bruised. Kaela had a cut across her cheek.

But they were smiling.

{Angel}: "You are ready for the next tier. When the time comes, you will not face the Tide as survivors—but as conquerors."

As the illusion faded, Lucas looked to Kaela and Elira, both standing tall beneath the midday sun.
