Chapter 35 - Embers in the Shadows

The chill of the early morning mist lingered across the highlands as Elijah stood atop a ridge overlooking the liberated town of Tarlac. Below him, the valley was alive with activity—villagers rebuilding homes, resistance units repairing artillery, and scouts coming and going with reports from the south. Yet even with the momentum they'd built, a creeping shadow settled in Elijah's heart.

His dreams had been plagued with images—fractured glimpses of machines walking through fire, of soldiers screaming against weapons that defied logic, of a black sun hanging in a gray sky. And always, in those dreams, stood the symbol: a glowing ring of silver and blue—the emblem of the Aeternus.

But the enemy in front of them—the Americans—still advanced. The next battle loomed.

Tensions Among Allies

General Luna arrived at camp later that morning, his coat dusted with the grime of travel and frustration carved into his expression. He wasted no time.

"Elijah," Luna barked, "our scouts report massing forces near Angeles. The Americans are preparing for a counteroffensive. They're bringing in heavier artillery. This war is far from over."

Elijah nodded grimly. "We'll hit them before they hit us."

Luna hesitated. "You're the heart of this resistance now, Reyes. But I need to know your mind's still in this fight. Not chasing ghosts in the shadows."

"The shadows might become our battlefield," Elijah replied. "We fight the Americans now, yes. But we prepare for what comes next."

Luna grunted but said nothing more.

A Wound Beneath the Surface

That evening, as the council debated logistics and troop movements, Isa found Elijah alone in the ruined chapel that had become his quiet retreat. The moonlight poured through the collapsed ceiling, casting long shadows across the stone floor. He knelt before a broken altar, gripping a worn journal filled with his own notes and Vela's fragmented intelligence.

Isa approached quietly, her steps echoing against the cold stone. "You haven't been sleeping."

"I can't afford to," Elijah murmured. "Too much depends on what we do next."

Isa placed a hand on his shoulder. "You carry too much alone. Let someone else bear it with you."

He turned to face her. For a moment, their eyes locked—two souls caught in the same storm. There was an unspoken connection, growing stronger each day. The war had drawn them close, but something deeper stirred beneath their duty. Something that neither had named.

Elijah looked away. "There's no room for feelings in a war like this."

"But they're already here," Isa whispered.

Before the silence could deepen, the sound of boots echoed in the chapel entrance. Eli-Ah stood at the threshold, her presence sharp and cool as always.

"Sorry to interrupt," she said, her voice even, "but you need to see this."

Secrets Unearthed

Eli-Ah led them to her private quarters, a small command tent near the edge of camp. On the table lay a device—strange, metallic, and humming faintly. Unlike anything either of them had ever seen.

"This was found near the perimeter," Eli-Ah explained. "Buried beneath a fallen tree. Aeternus technology, no doubt. It's active—and it's watching."

Isa narrowed her eyes. "They're tracking us."

Eli-Ah nodded. "And worse, they're listening. I don't think the Americans even know it exists."

Elijah stared at the device, his pulse quickening. "This means they're already here. We don't have time to wait. We need to move north. Strengthen the mountain fortresses, fortify our command."

Eli-Ah hesitated, then added, "There's something else… I've started remembering things, Elijah. About you. About before."

He turned to her sharply. "What do you mean?"

"I think you were chosen by the Aeternus once. You weren't just a soldier… you were part of something larger. You were meant to change this timeline."

Isa stiffened beside him, but said nothing.

Elijah stepped back, the weight of her words crashing down. "Why would they send me here?"

"That's what we need to find out," Eli-Ah replied. "But whatever the truth is, it's tied to your past—and your future."

Unrest at the Edge

The next morning brought a cold wind and unsettling news. A group of resistance scouts had gone missing in the nearby town of Concepcion. Locals whispered about strange figures seen at night—tall, masked, and glowing faintly in the dark.

Elijah tightened his gloves and strapped his rifle.

"We leave at dawn," he told Isa and Eli-Ah. "If the Aeternus are moving in, we'll meet them head-on. But we do this our way. Together."

Eli-Ah smirked. "Always."

Isa's smile was quieter. "I'll follow you anywhere, Elijah."

As they prepared to march, the fires of rebellion still burned hot. But in the distance, new embers sparked—cold, calculated, and unearthly. The fight for their homeland was no longer just about liberty. It was about survival in a war that was becoming far more than human.
