Chapter 10 - Chapter Ten:A Year in the Making

The year had passed in a blur of accomplishments, heartache, and quiet hope. Lena had poured herself into the expansion of her bookstore empire—what had started as a single quaint shop had now become a network of thriving businesses across Brindle Bay and beyond. She had opened three more locations, each with its own unique charm, but always centered around the same mission: to foster a love for books, community, and connection.

But even with all the success, her heart had been quietly yearning for something—someone—else. For Theo.

She spent her days managing the bookstores, attending local events, and focusing on growth, but when the sun set, her thoughts inevitably drifted to the man she hadn't seen in over a year. His promises of coming back kept her going, a constant beacon of hope that she held on to with every passing day.

Mira, on the other hand, had moved forward in her own life. She had married Alex, her long-time boyfriend, in a beautiful ceremony at a local vineyard. Lena had been a bridesmaid, her heart full of joy for her best friend as she watched Mira slip into her wedding dress, glowing with happiness. It had been an emotional day for both of them, not only because of the celebration of love but because it marked another milestone in their lives. It made Lena realize how much her own life had changed, how she was still holding on to something that felt like a faraway dream.

Mira and Alex had moved into a cozy home by the beach, and despite their busy lives, they often found time to visit Lena and catch up. The three of them had shared so many memories over the years, and even though they were all growing in different directions, their bond remained as strong as ever.

Lena's father, too, had softened over time. He no longer pressured her about marriage and children, though he still liked to remind her that family was important. But he saw how far she had come, and there was a quiet pride in his eyes whenever he visited her at the bookstore.

Lena stood at the window of her office in her largest store, looking out over the bustling street below. It had been a long year of late nights and endless decisions, but as the sunlight filtered in, she felt the sense of pride that came with watching her dream grow. But deep inside, the one thing that had kept her grounded—the thought of Theo coming back—was what truly sustained her.

Meanwhile, across the globe, Theo had spent the past year working on a major project in New York City. He had thrown himself into the work, trying to distract himself from the deep longing he felt for Lena. But no matter how far he traveled or how many people he met, Lena was always in his thoughts. The city had changed him in many ways—he had grown, learned, and achieved things he never thought possible—but there was still something missing.

He had been abroad for more than a year now, and while his professional success was undeniable, the personal side of his life had felt incomplete. He couldn't stop thinking about Lena. About the way she looked at him, the way she smiled when she saw him after a long day. Their love wasn't perfect—no love ever was—but it was real, and that's what mattered to him.

He stood in his small apartment, looking out at the skyline of New York. The city was bustling, alive, and yet, it felt empty without Lena by his side. It was in the quiet moments like this that he realized how much he missed her. How much he needed her.

Theo had always known that when the time was right, he would return to Brindle Bay. But now, he knew what he had to do when he came back—he was going to ask Lena to be his forever.

He had planned it all. He would propose to her in Brindle Bay, by the water where they had shared their first kiss. It was going to be simple, yet perfect. A moment they would share, just the two of them, to mark the beginning of the rest of their lives together.

Back in Brindle Bay, Lena's thoughts wandered to Theo again. She had heard little from him recently, though she understood the demands of his work. She knew he was busy, and she had her own life to manage. But every now and then, she would get a message from him—short, sweet, and full of love. And each time, her heart would flutter, as if time had paused, bringing them back to that moment when they first kissed.

That evening, after closing the bookstore, Lena sat down on the balcony of her apartment, watching the waves crash against the shore. She could hear Mira and Alex's laughter from their house down the street. The warm breeze whispered through the trees, and the quiet sound of the ocean filled the air.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her from her thoughts. She smiled when she saw Theo's name on the screen.

Theo: I can't believe it's been over a year already. It feels like forever. I miss you more than I can say.

Lena's heart ached with the familiar longing she had carried for so long. She quickly typed a response.

Lena: I miss you too. But I'm proud of you, Theo. You're doing amazing things. I'm always here, waiting for the day you come home.

Theo didn't reply right away, and Lena sat back, thinking about everything that had changed in the past year. Her business was thriving, her relationship with her father was improving, and Mira had found her happiness with Alex. But for Lena, there was always a piece missing. That piece was Theo, and she knew it.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed again, this time with a longer message.

Theo: I'm coming home soon. I've been thinking a lot about us, Lena. About the future. And when I get back... I have something I want to ask you.

Lena's pulse quickened, her fingers trembling slightly as she reread his words. She could feel the weight of his message in her chest, a rush of emotion rising up.

Lena: Theo, I've waited for you. Always. And I'll keep waiting. Whatever you need, I'm here.

She stared at the screen for a moment, a smile tugging at her lips. There was so much to look forward to. And in that moment, she realized that everything she had worked for, everything she had built, had led her to this point—the next chapter of her life with Theo.

Theo would be home soon. And when he returned, their love would take the next step. She wasn't sure what the future held, but she knew one thing: she was ready.
