Chapter 39 - End of the Month

With the end of the quiz, time quickly moved into May.

During this period, Class C stayed quiet, maybe waiting for the right moment to make a move. Kaoru Mitoma didn't care what Ryuuen was planning. If it didn't work out, just switch to someone else. Nothing more to say.

"Personal points: 148,500"

"Class Points: 940"

At six in the morning, the long-awaited class points were finally updated. At the same time, a sum of personal points was deposited, instantly bringing Kaoru Mitoma balance back above a hundred thousand. However, according to the previous agreement, he had to transfer half of this month's personal points to Morishita Ai account. So Kaoru Mitoma just glanced at it and put his phone away, not really caring.

"They actually deducted sixty points. Where did we go wrong?"

He had just arrived in the classroom when he noticed someone reflecting on their mistakes with a pained expression. Of course, there were also people trying to figure out what last month exam was. Judging from daily life, there was no sign that the school had done anything to them. Points were deducted, but for what?

Kaoru Mitoma had just sat down when he saw Sakayanagi Arisu give him a slight smile, as if to tell him that peaceful days were about to end.

Not long after, Tomonari Mashima appeared at the classroom door, holding a few poster-like things in his hand. As soon as he walked in, the whole classroom couldn't help but focus their attention on him. Among them were Katsuragi Kohei and Sakayanagi Arisu.

"Today the usual morning meeting, but judging by your faces, you probably already know what I'm going to say."

Tomonari Mashima didn't show much expression as he casually pinned a poster to the blackboard.

"These are your first-year results for this month. The whole process and outcome were exactly as expected."

Kaoru Mitoma looked up at the blackboard and saw the rankings for the four classes written clearly. Class A: 940 Class B: 770 Class C: 550 Class D: 0

...

Tch, those results really speak for themselves. The classroom was starting to get a little noisy. Totsuka Yahiko stared at Class B scores, gritting his teeth. "Damn it, they actually managed to close the gap this much!" But then, he started laughing. "This is hilarious. The idiots in Class D really are hopeless. They even managed to lose all their class points, not even 1 left, hahaha!"

Totsuka wasn't the only one who couldn't hold it in. Pretty much everyone who saw Class D zero points had a weird look on their face. Kaoru Mitoma was a bit taken aback too. He wondered if Horikita Suzune would lose her mind when she saw these results.

Things had gone even smoother than expected. Normally, if you knew there was going to be a test, you'd at least try to act a little more serious. Did they really think they had so many class points that they couldn't possibly lose them all?

"Mashima-sensei, can you tell us the details about the exam now?" Katsuragi Kohei asked in a low voice. Honestly, this was what Class A wanted to know the most right now.

Tomonari Mashima paused for a moment. "The first month exam is simple. The school wants to see how you'll behave when you don't know what's going on, including your classroom discipline and daily conduct."

"Daily conduct?"

Katsuragi Kohei looked a bit confused.

"There is a surveillance camera along the way. If you do anything unethical, the cameras will catch it,"

Tomonari Mashima explained.

"In other words, this exam isn't about anything else—it's all about your personal behavior. If you want to be considered outstanding, you need to have the qualities to match."

Katsuragi Kohei seemed thoughtful. This exam wasn't just about the students' abilities; it was also a test of their self-control. After all, from the very first day, the teachers here had never mentioned anything about paying attention in class or following the rules. They always had that look of 'listen if you want to.'

Class A didn't lose many points, mostly because they were already used to following the rules.

"But don't get too happy just yet. If you break any classroom rules from now on—like being late, leaving early, or zoning out during class—you'll still lose class points. No matter what school you're in, I think that's just common sense."

Looks like that's how Class D died. A Class didn't have any special reaction to Tomonari Mashima words.

"When is the next exam?" Kohei Katsuragi asked. Tomonari Mashima let out a helpless laugh.

"If I could tell you that, I would've told you from the start, Katsuragi."

Katsuragi thought about it and changed his question.

"Will the future exams also be like this, where we aren't told any of the rules?"

"It depends on the exam. Not having rules is a kind of rule in itself. You could even say that rules are just a way for the school to restrain you."

So, as long as something isn't forbidden by the rules, we can do whatever we want?

This was the first time Kaoru Mitoma had seen a teacher hint to their students that they should use any means necessary against their enemies. Suddenly, he became interested in Tomonari Mashima past. At that moment, Arisu Sakayanagi suddenly spoke up to hurry things along.

"Mashima-sensei, we're running out of time. Can you get to the point?"

The girl smiled, as if she already knew that today focus wasn't just on class points, but that there was something else especially important. Tomonari Mashima glanced at her in surprise, then put up another poster on the blackboard. Names appeared in front of everyone. It looked like the results from the previous quiz, with each person's name followed by their scores in each subject.

Kaoru Mitoma spotted his own name on the list too, ranked nine. What an unlucky number. Except for the top students, most people had an average score around 80. That said, there were still people who weren't good at studying. For example, Kamuro Masumi barely managed just over 60. And that was with easy questions.

"Your average score on this quiz was 84. If this had been a real exam, anyone scoring below 42 would have been expelled."

Tomonari Mashima said something chilling in a completely calm tone.

"According to school rules, if you fail even one subject in the midterms or finals, you'll be expelled. Luckily, all of you passed."

Even the student at the very bottom of the class scored over 50 points. That really is something worth praising. So that's why they said the quiz was just for reference earlier. Turns out it was just a warm-up before the midterm and final exams?

Thinking this, Kaoru Mitoma couldn't help but glance over at Kamuro Masumi. Yeah, he could totally see how stiff the girl expression was. She wasn't moving at all, like some invisible force had nailed her to the spot.

Maybe she noticed Kaoru Mitoma looking at her, because she turned her head stiffly, and for a moment, their eyes met. Kamuro Masumi lips moved slightly, but not a sound came out. He had no idea what she was trying to say.

"It's just expulsion, no big deal, Kamuro," Kaoru Mitoma whispered considerately.

"I believe in your ability to learn. This is nothing for you."

Kamuro Masumi wanted to cover her face. Why did she have to say something like that back then?
