Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: Because I CameWent by carriage, returned by carriage.

Having gone to the Royal Capital and then returning to the walled city of Stohess District, it naturally felt somewhat crude. Even though it was much better than Wall Rose, it was still several levels below the Royal Capital.

Unlike the journey there, only Rayan returned. Commander Nile had stayed in the Royal Capital, as that was his usual place of work.

At this moment, the carriage stopped in front of the Military Police Headquarters. As Rayan got out, he heard several voices.

"Yo, the King's favorite is back."

"Hahaha!"

"Nice suit. I'll get myself one later."

"Look at your face first."

He looked up and saw several Military Police officers on duty. They had obviously been there for many years and looked quite old the so-called "old hands."

It was perfectly normal for these guys to look down on Rayan, so he didn't bother with them and went straight into the headquarters, returning to his dormitory.

The dormitory was empty at the moment; everyone was probably out doing their duties. However, there was a note left on the table, seemingly for him.

"Rayan, our uniforms have arrived. Yours is on your bed, change into it when you get back. Oh, and the Branch Commander told us to tell you to go to his office when you return. We've gone out on street patrol and probably won't be back until the afternoon Marlo."

Rayan tossed the note into the trash can and glanced at his bed. There was indeed a uniform placed on it.

Quickly, he changed into the uniform.

The uniforms of each military branch were similar, differing only in the embroidered insignia.

All four branches had a shield at the bottom of their insignia, with different symbols in front. The Training Corps had two crossed swords, signifying the "sword of subjugation"; the Garrison Regiment had a rose, thus also known as the "guardians of the rose"; the Survey Corps had the "Wings of Freedom," one white and one blue; and the Military Police Regiment had the "Law-enforcing Unicorn." Having changed into the uniform, he stood in front of the mirror.

"Why does this feel like a lackey's outfit..."

Rayan shook his head, folded the suit he had taken off, put it in the wardrobe, and then went out to the Branch Commander's office.

When Commander Nile was absent, the Branch Commander was naturally the highest authority. Whether it was personnel transfers or operational commands, he controlled everything. It could be said that the entire headquarters was his "one-man show." In terms of power, it was undoubtedly too centralized, completely unlike some countries that had roles similar to "political commissars" to check and balance each other.

At this moment, Rayan entered the office building, found the office, and pushed open the door. A cloud of smoke immediately billowed out, causing him to cough twice.

Looking up, he saw the long desk used for work was already covered with playing cards and wine bottles. Several officers were sitting around it, chatting and laughing. Hearing the sound at the door, they all looked over in unison.

"Rayan, come in," the Branch Commander beckoned him.

Rayan entered the room. One of the officers looked at him and smiled. "Not bad, quite handsome. No wonder the King awarded you the Warrior's Medal, haha."

"Don't talk nonsense!" the Branch Commander glared at the man, then said to Rayan, "The Commander told me, kid, you're a talent. And you've even gained the King's favor, very good. So, the Commander and I discussed it, and you'll be the captain of this new batch of soldiers."

Rayan's eyebrow twitched.

"Work hard, and if you perform well, you'll get promoted in the future," the Branch Commander said, looking around as if searching for something. "Where's the letter of appointment? Have you guys seen it, you bastards?"

Several officers got up to look around. One of them picked up a piece of paper from the ground. "This?"

"How did that get on the ground!"

The Branch Commander casually scolded with a dark face, took the paper, and handed it to Rayan. "This is your letter of appointment, take it. Oh, and those new recruits are patrolling on Second Street right now. You can go directly to them."

"Understood, thank you for the trust, Commander. I will definitely fulfill my duties."

"Alright, alright, go on out."

Rayan bowed slightly and then left the room, closing the door behind him. The choking smoke and irritating sounds were shut out.

Looking down at the letter of appointment covered in muddy shoe prints, Rayan sneered and turned to go downstairs.

He naturally knew this was a deliberate show of power, or what they considered a small "hint."

A newcomer should know their place. Giving you a squad leader position is already implementing the instructions from above. Don't think you can do whatever you want just because you received the King's favor. In this territory, we still call the shots... That was probably the message they wanted to convey.

However, Rayan didn't care.

Moreover, for him, a squad leader position was already a significant amount of authority right now.

The total number of new recruits in the Military Police Regiment was probably less than a hundred, and only a dozen or so were assigned to this East District. That meant Rayan could currently command about a dozen people, which was enough for now.

Thinking about what the Branch Commander had said, Rayan left the headquarters and headed towards Second Street.

On the way, he saw many people looking at him and pointing. Some even came up to talk to him, praising him as a "brave child."

It was nothing surprising. The news of his audience with the King yesterday had already spread throughout the streets and alleys via the newspapers. Although there was no photography technology within the walls, the text was enough to describe Rayan's appearance.

After all, his appearance was quite distinctive: black hair, black eyes, and soft features. This Eastern appearance was still very rare within the walls. Coupled with his Military Police uniform, it would be strange if others didn't recognize him.

Constantly surrounded and blocked, Rayan had to use the excuse of "being on a mission" to break through the encirclement.

He thought: This is good. So many people remember me now. As long as I'm not killed by the same guy twice, I'll have plenty of respawn chances.

He passed through the main road and walked for a long time before reaching Second Street.

This street was clearly much more desolate and dilapidated than the previous main road. The houses on both sides were old and broken, and many of the pedestrians on the street were even ragged and had fierce looks on their faces.

Rayan looked ahead and saw the other recruits he was patrolling with their expressions were all tense, as if they were afraid these passersby would suddenly attack them. This worry wasn't entirely unfounded, as this place wasn't far from the "Underground City."

No, more accurately, it should be called the "Underground Passage." The main Underground City, where people lived, was actually beneath the Royal Capital within the inner walls, not here. In this Stohess District, there were only interconnected passages underground. However, these passages might also hide a lot of crime, so even the Military Police wouldn't go down to investigate unless they personally saw a criminal run inside.

Otherwise, if they died inside, no one would know, and no one would investigate.

Just like "Kenny the Ripper" back then, who killed hundreds of Military Police officers and got away with it, even becoming the superior of the most elite Military Police unit.

From this, it could be seen that the government didn't care about the lives of these Military Police officers, and the Military Police weren't fools either. Naturally, they turned a blind eye to those high-risk criminals. It was best if they could catch them, but it didn't matter if they couldn't. It was basically a "no report, no investigation" attitude.

However, this was even better.

Rayan thought to himself: Precisely because of this, there were so many hidden criminals within Wall Sina. And these people were his capital to rise to prominence.

One day in the future, the criminals would finally recall the terror of being ruled by the Military Police and the humiliation of being locked in prison.

Criminals, your good days are over. Why? Because I have arrived.
