Chapter 14 - Chapter 13. Blackmailed

It was the custom of the university for pre-final medical students to undergo a mandatory attachment during the last trimester of the academic year.

Over the course of three months—usually January to March—students were required to work in a major hospital, typically Level 3 or above.

To ensure accountability, each student was issued a booklet called a logbook, which they were expected to complete daily.

The logbook recorded the ward or section worked in, the date, learning points, achievements, and comments from the team leader. The assessors relied heavily on these recommendations when evaluating each student.

Along with Cindy and Megyn, several other students from City University were posted to the hospital.

This meant Dr. Evans had a heavy workload. The hospital provided him with a temporary office.

As per the university's system, students were expected to leave their completed logbooks with the doctor in charge of their ward or the team leader. The assessors would later collect them after a ward round. Their final comments determined whether a student earned a credit pass or merely a pass.

One afternoon, Megyn received a text from the admin office of the orthopedic wards:

Please pick your logbook and deliver it to Dr. Evans' office – Room 28. —Admin Assistant.

The moment she read it, a knot twisted in her stomach.

None of the other students had to deliver their logbooks personally.

Why me? She knew the answer. She just didn't want to think about it.

Was Dr. Evans trying to blackmail her?

Cindy and the others had confirmed their logbooks had already been collected and assessed.

At the admin desk, Carole paused her typing and looked at Megyn over her glasses.

"Dr. Evans deliberately refused to carry your file," she said with a shake of her head. "I wonder what he needs to discuss with you."

"Me too," Megyn said, shrugging. "Any ideas?"

Carole hesitated, tapping her pen against the desk. "I think it's more than academics. I think he likes you. And you've never given him a chance."

Megyn sat down, weighing her options.

Benjamin's words from last night echoed in her ears:

"Be very careful with him. He'll go to any length to get what he wants."

Carole noticed her hesitation.

"Let me deliver it for you," Carole offered. "I can explain everything."

Megyn stood up, steeling herself.

Mentally prepared to face the inevitable, like a brave woman.

But was she brave?

"No," she said, picking up her logbook. "I'll clear this once and for all."

Inwardly, she was terrified. She slipped her phone into her pocket, intending to record the conversation if needed.

On the way to Room 28, Cindy caught up with her. She had come to check why Megyn wasn't answering her calls.

Without hesitation, Cindy offered to accompany her. They agreed Cindy would wait just outside the office door—like a silent bodyguard.

At Room 28, Megyn knocked.

A faint voice responded, "Come in."

She pushed the door open—and immediately encountered Terry.

Terry gave a knowing shrug. "One man's poison is another man's meat," she muttered on her way out.

Inside, Dr. Evans stood up from his desk, beaming as he extended his hand.

Megyn placed her logbook firmly into his palm, avoiding contact.

"Here you go," she said crisply. "I would appreciate it if you treated me like the other students."

Without waiting for a reply, she turned toward the door.

"Megyn."

She paused, hand on the knob.

Dr. Evans leaned against the desk, smiling mockingly.

"If you walk out of that door," he said almost lazily, "I'll make this logbook disappear. And the university won't let you proceed to your final year next month."

Megyn turned back, her expression neutral.

He chuckled softly. "You don't like me very much, do you?"

"Pardon me, Doctor," she said, polite but firm. "You are my lecturer. I am your student."

He tapped his fingers on the desk, still smiling.

"Most students here are friendlier," he mused. "Especially the female students. You're different. I like that."

Though fear coiled inside her, Megyn kept her face blank.

"Is that all, Doctor?" she asked. "I should get back to the ward rounds."

He tilted his head, watching her closely.

"Of course," he said. Then, squinting, added, "But Megyn... are you even a little scared?"

Her fingers tightened on the doorknob.

"No," she said coolly. "I don't scare easily."

His smile didn't falter.

"You're a strong lady," he said. "I like that. But... be careful."

Without another word, Megyn stepped out, her expression unreadable.

What did that mean?

Later that evening, she and Cindy sat cross-legged on the floor of Cindy's apartment, replaying the recording on her phone.

"It can't be that he's targeting all the female students," Megyn said thoughtfully. "Even Terry?"

"What did Benjamin say?" Cindy asked.

"Not much," Megyn replied, shaking her head. "Just to stay away from Dr. Evans."

"Then Benjamin doesn't know him well," Cindy said. "We still have a lot to find out about Dr. Evans."

Megyn sighed.

"Speaking of discoveries," she said, a mischievous glint in her eye, "Terry Mumbi is the one interested in Jerry."

Cindy laughed. "Jerry already told me," she said with a sly smile.

She hesitated, touching the back of her neck.

"It's you I'm worried about," she said seriously. "Find out what Dr. Evans is trying to warn you about Benjamin."

The words struck Megyn like a bolt of lightning.

What does Benjamin have to do with all this?

What exactly did Dr. Evans know about Benjamin? The question gnawed at Megyn.

His mocking smile, his veiled warning—none of it made sense unless there was something deeper he wasn't saying.

But how did Dr. Evans even know Benjamin liked her? She hadn't told anyone, not even Cindy until recently. Had Benjamin said something?

Doubt clouded Megyn's heart. Suddenly, she realized a painful truth: she didn't really know Benjamin at all. She had trusted his calm demeanor, his subtle kindness, but beyond the surface, who was he? How much had he hidden?

Megyn's mind raced with questions she had never dared to ask before. If Dr. Evans, of all people, could hint at danger, then maybe Benjamin wasn't just the man she she was starting to believe he was.

Maybe, he had secrets of his own.

She had to find out these secrets.
