Chapter 23 - Episode 18: Productive Day

Today was truly a good day for me.

Let's start by talking about how the resources lesson went. Last week, teacher Wanda gave us a general explanation. This week, she had begun to go into more detail about what she explained and the topic she elaborated on was very important to me.

Mines

I already know what exists in my previous world. Copper, iron, silver, gold, coal, diamond and more. Gold is in an interesting position because it was the currency of the argents and the kane that was kept in them. Even though it has lost this role, its usage has expanded in other areas. I heard that a ritchi wanted heavy armor to protect it and this armor was made from the gold in the joints. Since gold is a soft metal, it is considered easy to work with. That's why gold still maintains its value.

Of course, mines are valuable resources but the resources I was interested in were different. I was sure that there were mines in this world that I had never even heard of. I knew nothing except that the ingot I used for Hanbel's dagger came from the Demon kingdom. When teacher Wanda first mentioned this mineral, it made me happy because I would finally learn what its name was.

It was called viridyum. This mines was found in the west of Heiben, in the Demon Kingdom. Its properties were similar to iron but its color and smell were different. Since there was not much iron in that geography, the demons declared this mine as their own iron mine. To turn this mines ore into a ingot, one had to reach the melting point of steel. It was stronger and harder than normal iron. The disadvantage was that weapons made from this mines became more fragile in cold weather.

Aside from this, she also mentioned other mines and the monsters themselves. She talked about some of the dangers in the Heiben land having armors and interesting weapons and how these could be potential spoils of war. Of course, I took notes on everything I needed to remember. I noted down viridyum and a few other mines. Before the lesson ended, teacher Wanda didn't forget to cover one last topic.

It was about accidents that could happen during the extraction of a mines. Many mines are found underground and to extract them, you dig beneath the earth. To gather large quantities of resources, you must be coordinated and ensure safety. Accidents occur when these safety measures are ignored. We were told that greed can sometimes be our downfall.

I took notes on everything related to this lesson and after class, I told Teacher Wanda that I wanted to advance in the field of blacksmithing. The old woman must have understood what I meant, because she mentioned that one of the basements of the building they stayed in was an forge. After she told me the location of the forge, I thanked her and prepared to move on to the next lesson.

Through the Class Philosophy, I reconnected with my friends. Stefan looked a bit tired. I think he was studying too hard for the lessons and wanted to pass the exams successfully. Iris looked tense. Although she didn't seem like it, the death of Rona had affected the students. I could understand Iris's tension. Ela must have been nervous too but she was displaying a detached, indifferent attitude, not showing nervous. Most of the gossip around us was about who killed Rona. My strategy to divert attention seemed to be working for now because it was thought that the criminal was the nobleman who pressured Rona. At this point, I couldn't help but glance at Ela. Although I was curious about what she was thinking because of her aloofness towards the nobles, I didn't get the chance to ask her due to the instructor arriving.

Winning a class is really not easy. Even instructor Tom mentioned this. When I thought about what I experienced on monday, it was clear that I didn't have to risk my life to gain a class. I remembered what Tom had told us before. It was said that the formation of my class depended on how I took care of myself. Today, instructor Tom focused on this and asked those who didn't have a class if they had any dreams.

"I want to make my sick mother proud."

"I want to build a house of my own."

"I am curious about what's happening in other countries."

I had heard similar sentences before. For me, this dream of course was about being in an adventure. Stefan mentioned that he didn't want his younger siblings to go hungry. Iris said she wanted to serve F. At this point, I looked at the nalias. They seemed normal for now but deep down, I thought they were just like Rona. I needed to secretly inform Zui of my observations today.

Aside from that, we were continually questioned about what we desired. I thought Ela would say she wanted to embark on an adventure like mine but she said she wanted to see her family, which surprised me. To be honest, I wasn't someone who knew everything about my friends. I believed there were many friends but few true friends. So, I have to admit that I didn't have many close friends.

Finally, they asked Alex what he wanted. I was curious to hear what this character, whom I envisioned as the main character in my mind, would say.

"Well... Honestly, I'm not sure what I should dream about."

His sincerity was obvious in his words. Instructor Tom gave us a few more details about the nature of the classes and then ended the lesson.

"Buddy... I never liked studying."

"Then not study. Your brain will turn into pudding."

This is how a conversation between Stefan and me went. Our friend group still had no hurry to leave the classroom. Ela, standing behind Stefan, joined the conversation.

"Nell is right. You should stop beating yourself up."

"Aa... This time, you guys won. What are we doing?"

"I don't know."

I simply said I didn't know. Meanwhile, Ela nudged my arm. I think she had something to say.

"Who do you think killed that nalia, Nell?"

Ela asking this didn't seem to sit well with Iris and Stefan at all. I also needed this kind of defense. My situation shouldn't be known by more people.

"How would I know?"

"Um... Among us, you seem to be the smartest. That's why I was curious if you had any idea."

"Of course, I have an idea. Why do you think the person who was killed was a nalia?"

"So someone's trying to cause racial division, buddy?"

"I don't know. Whatever the reason, the relationship between our country and the nalias will only worsen."

There was a brief moment of silence. I once again directed my attention in the direction I wanted. Technically, I had still told the truth. These twisted cultists wouldn't recognize any kingdom. Their fighting was in their best interest.

Two hours later, we agreed to meet at our usual cafe and left the classroom. For a brief moment, I was alone, and I set out towards the forge that I was told about to make the sword for Zui.
