It took them about six minutes to drive from the garage to the convenience store just down the street.
Of course, they were being chased by monsters at the same time, but luckily, Kara was the one at the wheel, and she was anything but a bad driver.
Bang!
Jayhan was the first to exit the car, gripping the dagger he carried with him.
The moment he was out, the skeleton monsters began heading toward his position.
Coming from all directions, the sound of the car was the only thing that drew their attention to the group.
"Head for the store!" Jayhan yelled, stabbing his dagger into the skull of a monster.
[You have killed a skeleton monster.]
[You have gained 100 coins.]
As soon as the monster turned into a red gem, he picked it up and attacked the next one that was close to him.
Veronica, launching herself out of the car with a smile, suddenly grabbed Jayhan in the middle of his fight and began to run toward the store.
Kara did the same thing, though hers felt more like she was chasing them.
The moment they were inside the store, Kara closed the door, using her hammer as a lock to stop the skeleton monsters from entering.
—Pant
"That won't hold them back for long. They have the ability to crawl out of the ground, so we should hurry and gather as much food as possible."
Jayhan looked around the store; there didn't seem to be anyone inside with them.
He then spotted a small bag on the counter and instantly headed to grab it.
It was big, meaning it could contain as much food as he wanted.
"I'll go find another bag." Veronica was about to move toward where Jayhan was, but then—
Grab!
Kara halted her.
{The system doesn't view this character as a threat.}
Kara ignored it.
"What are you playing at?" she whispered, making sure Jayhan didn't overhear while he was selecting food for the bag.
"Sorry? You're, like, hurting my arm right now."
"I asked you a question…" Kara tightened her hold even more.
Veronica winced a bit, picking up on the wild intensity growing in Kara's eyes.
"R-relax, I'm not trying to take your boyfriend from you or anything. Chill, girl."
"Then what are you doing here?"
"Trying to survive like everyone else. J-bear said something totally smart at the store; that's why I—"
"J-bear?" Kara's eyes twitched a bit.
From the corner of the store, Jayhan suddenly called out.
"Kara! I need your help over here!"
The moment she heard his voice, Kara calmed down, releasing her hold on Veronica.
Glaring at her for a while, Kara walked away, moving toward the direction where Jayhan was.
Once she was there, she saw him holding a can of beans, two of which were different products.
"There you are…" He faced her. "Which of these lasts longer? I remember you mentioned it once."
Kara leaned forward.
"The red one; it's the better choice."
"Got it."
Jayhan threw it into the bag, which was already half full.
In a short amount of time, he had managed to pick out the necessary things they would need to survive for as long as the apocalypse would last.
As he picked the items, he couldn't help but remember a game he played during his first time as a streamer.
Though he couldn't remember the name, he knew the game had to do with survival. You were meant to gather as many items as you could in a matter of time.
He always managed to pick the best items of all the other players, but that was only because Kara was always there beside him.
After a good while, the bag was filled with foodstuffs and other necessities.
The store was still filled with foodstuffs, meaning any other survivor could have the luxury of picking out what they wanted to eat if they ever found the store.
Now, the three of them stood around the bag, silence carrying over, only overwritten by the scratching sounds of the skeleton warriors trying to enter the shop.
"So, like, are we supposed to carry this big bag with us? Everywhere?" Veronica was the first to ask.
We?
Jayhan looked at her.
They had been in the store for a good amount of time, and yet none of the skeleton monsters seemed to have pulled up from the ground like they did at the garage.
It was the best time to ask Veronica why she was with them and what she wanted.
Upon their first meeting, Veronica already knew his name. It was way too suspicious to just overlook.
Suddenly—
Ding!
(The quest has ended.)
(Congratulations on completing the second quest.)
(Number of survivors in Region 235 = 4578)
(Rewards will be shared shortly.)
'Looks like it has ended,' Jayhan said to himself as he looked at the notification.
Nam!
Veronica fell to her knees, relief hitched on her face.
"Hhh~ it's over at last. Haha, I thought I was going to die for real. I have, like, no idea how to fight and all."
Kara sighed.
She had already noticed that the skeleton monsters were walking away from the shop, as if heading back to where they were hiding.
This only meant one thing—humans would start roaming the streets to survive. Some would be on the hunt for food; it had been only a day, but most people would probably have zero tolerance for the stress they'd been through.
"Babe, I think we should leave this place before people rush in," Kara advised.
Jayhan couldn't help but think that too. Then again, he really wanted to know more about Veronica.
"Relax, you can ask me anything you need once we're out of here. I know I said the same thing last time, but, like, do I look like someone who would lie to you?" Veronica said as she stood up, dusting her skirt.
'It's not exactly written on people's faces,' said Jayhan in his mind.
Just then—
Bang! Bang!
"Open the door!!!"
"Those monsters may still be out there! Come, hurry up!"
A group of people was outside the convenience store, begging to come inside.
