Chapter 8 - Ch 8 - Trial of Strength (4)

All 3 light orbs gleamed with bright light, slowly expanding itself into the shapes of goblins.

While Kai, on the other hand, tried his best to take control of his worn and torn body. His physical condition was far worse than what it seemed to be.

Although, even to the naked eye, he seemed far from being okay.

His battered body barely cooperated with his mind, while his legs trembled as if they would break any moment.

However, even in such intense conditions, a smile remained on his face.

For he knew, that even if it was small, the possibility for him to win wasn't non-existent.

His eyes remained fixed on the goblins, waiting for the light to shed away.

As time passed, the glow began to fade away, revealing the bright greenish skin of goblins.

With a loud unison of shrieks, the goblins came alive while the light vanished without leaving a single trace behind.

Once again, the goblins couldn't see a single soul in front of their eyes. And thus, decided to turn around.

Unbeknownst to what was about to happen, the first goblin turned around only to realize that its world had flipped upside down.

"KIEK...?"

Its vision had changed in an instant.

Rather than the plain view of the Colosseum, it saw blurred figures standing down on the ground—almost as if it was floating...No, falling.

For an instance, its vision seemed to have cleared as it widened its eyes in shock.

In front of its eyes, the goblin saw two of his kin standing next to his—what seemed like—headless body while a frail-looking human stood right beside him.

His hand slowly moved away from its body almost as if he had swung his dagger and beheaded him.

The goblin wanted to cry out and warn its kin, which stood clueless about the man beside them, yet not a single sound came out of his mouth.

Soon, darkness began to nibble at its dying consciousness, slowly letting its pupil dilate.

Time—that previously seemed to have slowed down—resumed once again, forcing his head to rotate several times, creating an arch before finally hitting the ground with a soft thud.

However, that same thud in a giant colosseum felt nothing less than a glass hitting the ground in the dead silent hours of the night.

The sudden noise piqued the attention of the other two goblins as they turned their heads in an instant.

Horror washed over their face as they realized that one of their kin had already died.

Their feet slowly retreated as they clenched onto their weapons with both hands, their eyes darted in all directions looking for even a single trace of the invisible killer.

"You. See?" One of the goblins mumbled as they continued to scan the area, its voice slightly wavering.

In response, the other one shook its head sideways. Scared and nervous, they stood their ground, even though, half-heartedly.

The goblins stood extremely close to each other, watching each other back as the last card for their defense.

Yet, for some reason, even after several moments, the Colosseum looked empty.

Where was Kai?

Kai hadn't been kidnapped by some random aliens or summoned to a different fantasy, for he stood on the very same grounds as the goblins.

In fact, he was standing right beside them—without their knowledge, of course.

Although the goblins had entrusted their backs to each other, a small gap remained advent in between them.

And that is exactly where Kai stood while holding onto his breath.

Moments ago, when Kai had just attacked their kin and beheaded it, a thought appeared in his mind:

'I need to hide... But where!?' in that split second, he ran his eyes through all of his surroundings and was struck with a realization.

'Basics of Assassination is to hide in a spot that not even the suspect would dare to believe of your presence.'

His eyes narrowed as he saw a small gap between both goblins. Using the sudden noise as his accomplice, he quickly ran and hid in their only blindspot.

Two daggers. Two targets. Perfect conditions. Yet, he couldn't finish them.

Why? Because his body had already reached its limits and was barely holding on. And if that wasn't enough, the oxygen in his lungs was already on the verge of exhaustion.

He tried to remain calm for as long as he could but even for him, a knife hung right above his neck.

Even the most subtle sound would cause his instant death.

'Do or Die!' a thought flashed in his mind as he finally decided to act.

With a long, silent jump, Kai launched himself into the air—his eyes dead set on the pair of goblins below him.

With all his might, he swung his arms and threw both of his daggers toward the goblin up front.

His daggers followed each other, one behind the other as if it was all a part of some plan.

The daggers soon reached their target and the first dagger pierced through its skin, yet stopped midway—Since Kai couldn't throw them with enough strength.

But soon, the second dagger followed up and precisely hit the handle of the first dagger, hammering it into the skull of the goblin, taking its life in an instant.

The other and now, the only remaining goblin heard the sound clearly. It knew that another one of his kin was taken out by the unknown man and rather than getting scared, it turned around and saw the man in question descending to the ground.

Without any second thoughts, it launched itself toward the man as it prepared to end things in a single hit with its axe.

As Kai finally touched the ground again, he noticed that the final goblin had launched an attack on him, and that, too, at the worst time possible.

Because Kai's battered body refused to move any further while he had already lost his weapons.

As of now, he was merely an injured sheep waiting to be eaten in front of a revenge-struck wolf.

'Fuck...'

His pupil shrank as he saw the goblin jumping in the air with its axe swinging towards him, slowly getting closer and closer.
