Chapter 73: The Shape of the Flame
The air around Hoshikawa had changed.
Even the sky, once gentle and warm with the hues of spring, now seemed washed with the smoldering weight of unspoken truths. Riku stood silently at the cliff's edge, the pendant in his hand pulsating faintly with an orange-red glow, as if breathing with a life of its own. Behind him, the wind carried distant voices—his friends training at the hill below, unaware of what Riku had just learned.
"He was... alive?" Riku's voice cracked under the pressure of revelation. The truth he'd received from Elder Akari still rang in his ears.
"Your brother didn't disappear. He was taken."
Riku tightened his grip around the pendant. A torrent of emotions surged through him—anger, grief, and something dangerously close to hope. His brother, Kaito, the one who had always shielded him, who had left behind riddles instead of answers, was alive. Or had been.
"Why now?" he muttered. "Why tell me now?"
Airi approached silently, her footsteps light but sure, her expression unreadable. She carried the same weariness he did, but hid it better behind her composed eyes. "Because you were finally ready to hear it."
Riku didn't turn around. "You knew."
She didn't deny it. "Only fragments. Not the whole picture. Your brother was part of something bigger than us. Bigger than the Bloom Trials."
He spun on her. "Then why didn't you say anything? All this time, I thought he left us. That he died!"
Airi lowered her gaze, guilt shadowing her features. "Because I made a promise to him. To protect you... and to keep the truth hidden until it was safe."
"Safe?" Riku's voice was bitter. "There's nothing safe about this."
A sudden flare erupted from his pendant. It cast a burst of heat that startled even Airi. Riku stumbled back, gripping it tightly, his breaths shallow. Visions—no, memories—flashed before his eyes. A flicker of Kaito standing at a temple gate. A voice, distorted by distance and time.
"Protect the heart of the Bloom. Even if it breaks yours."
Riku fell to his knees. "What the hell does that mean...?"
Airi knelt beside him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "The Bloom isn't just power. It's a legacy. A curse. Your brother didn't vanish. He was chosen."

Flashback - Years Earlier
Kaito stood in the sacred chamber beneath the Temple of Bloom. A younger Airi watched him from the doorway, uncertainty in her eyes.
"You don't have to do this," she whispered.
Kaito smiled sadly. "But I do. If I don't, someone worse will."
He placed the pendant into a stone slot, where it began to glow with the fire of the ancient Flame Bloom.
"Promise me something, Airi. Look after him. If he ever reaches this path... don't let him walk it alone."

Back to Present
"He sacrificed everything for you," Airi said, tears finally reaching her eyes.
Riku stood slowly. His flame was no longer flickering with confusion. It burned steady, purposeful. "Then I won't let it be in vain. If he left me this legacy, I'll see it through. No more running. No more doubting."
The skies above Hoshikawa seemed to respond. Clouds parted, and the sunlight cast long shadows across the valley. The Bloom Trials were not over. But the game had changed.

Meanwhile, deep in the Northern Reaches...
A cloaked figure watched a red crystal suspended in a floating prism. Within, an image flickered—Riku at the cliff's edge, fire in his eyes.
"So the younger Hayashi awakens at last..." the figure murmured. Another voice responded, hollow and ancient:
"The Balance is shifting. The Bloom King must not rise."
The figure chuckled. "Then it's time to call the Hollow Seeds. Let's see if the boy is ready to face what we buried."
