Chapter 46 - 6. just boys

Karunakar and Siva met Chandranna at his factory. They wandered around at village for a while. As the sun set and darkness loomed, they went to a traditional palm stones shop. After taking their seats, Siva "folks, is drink and dry fish fry okay for you?" asked looking at both of them. Karunakar nodded and Chandranna "chicken fry for me." he added. Siva went to order for them. Karunakar and Chandranna can drink in moderation while Siva loses control in front of palm stones. After ordering, Siva came back to their table "Siva, don't drink over your limit. I don't want to carry you to your house." Chandranna told him as soon as he sat infront of him. Karunakar added "aunt blamed us for not stopping you every time you pass out." smacking Siva's back.

Karunakar started "Chandra, did your parents talk about marriage proposal?"asked him. Siva looked at him "Karunakaraa, how can you ask him like that? Look at him, feeling embarrassed." pointing to Chandranna who's fidgeting his fingers over the table and eyes wandering here and there not knowing where he's supposed to look. Karunakar let out a loud laugh "ha hah.. wait till my sister approves." Chandranna looked at him "doesn't she like me? We get along pretty well right?" asked hesitantly afraid of the answer he'll hear. Siva "Chandraa, he told me that she hadn't replied properly so he need to confirm again." looked at him pitifully. Chandranna face paled at their talks. He didn't consider the option that she might reject him. Their parents are not like many others who don't give their daughter's any opinion on their marriage. Her parents clearly told their parents that as long as Aparna approves, they don't have any objections and vice versa. Observing his changed color Karunakar felt bad and called Siva with his elbow by poking him. Siva was already looking at him and he really felt bad for him and remembered Aparna and Young man sitting on the rock beside each other. He was pondering whether to tell them or not. Right at the time, their order came. Palm stone in three small earthen pots and chicken fry and fish fry on banana leaves was placed infront of them. Chandranna took the one that is infront of him as soon the server placed the on the table and chugged on it. Karunakar and Siva looked at him bewildered, because they know he eats more than he drinks. They looked at each other as he was gulping it down continously. Siva "young master Chandra, you need to go home after drinking. Take it slowly." told him to be cautious of their family. As soon as Chandranna heard home, he stopped drinking and put that back on the table, ate the chicken. Karunakar and Siva slowly took their drinks alternating with fish fry. "Chandra, don't look so down as if you got rejected already." Siva teased him a bit taking his pot. Karunakar "Idiot, he's already like that. Don't poke his wound." whispered to Siva leaning on to him. Chandranna "Siva, I don't think I will be able to take if she rejects me." told them with a painful voice as he controlled tears falling. Karunakar and Siva stared at him still unable to utter any word. Three just drank and ate the food. Silence filled them for a while until Siva "Chandra, do you want another one?" asked as he got up from his seat, he shook his head sideways as no. Siva went ahead and brought one for himself.

Chandranna "Karunakaraa, will you ask her again?" asked looking at his pot which he held tightly with both of his hands. Karunakar nodded and "as soon as I hear from her, you'll be the first one to hear from me even before my parents." he tried to reassure him. Siva came with his drink and sat beside Chandranna placing his arm over his shoulder "Chandra, don't worry before it comes. Whatever comes, we both will be with you to share that." told as he patted his shoulder. Chandranna completed his chicken and left out his drink while Siva completed his two pots. He was still conscious enough to hold a logical conversation. As the night deepened, Siva compelted around six pots of palm stone. People started leaving to their homes and some went to village center tree. Karunakar "I think we should leave too, mother will lecture me if I'm late." Chandranna nodded "Mm.. we should leave. I don't want to be scolded by father and uncle." Siva dissatisfaction shown all over his face "let's drink for some more time." asked them swaying his body along with Chandranna's with a piece of fish in his hand. Chandranna stopped his movements and "you better get up now before your father come here searching for you." warned him.

Siva whined and got up reluctantly as Chandranna tried to lift him. Karunakar helped him from the other side. Siva put his hands over their shoulders placing his entire weight on them. Karunakar and Chandranna took a step forward and waited for siva to move forward. Karunakar saw him not moving a little "Chandra get him on my back, that will be faster." as he bent down on his knee, Chandra helped him climb and looked his back. Siva was sound asleep on his back while Karunakar and Chandranna talked along their way. They reached Siva's house "be here. I will ask aunt to come here." Chandranna moved as he told that.

His mother came with Chandranna "you both made him drink a lot again." she complained. Karunakar replied "aunt, don't you remember how he'll be when he drinks a lot.?" he laughed and she made him drink some water and lead them to his room. Karunakar threw him on to the mat and stretched himself as he moaned from soreness. She offered them some buttermilk and kept complaining about his drinking habit. They were already accustomed to those complaints since five years, just drank their buttermilk and took their leave. Karunakar "Chandra, I'll leave from here. See you tomorrow." said to Chandranna. "Okay. See you tomorrow." he replied and they went in opposite directions from there. Siva's mother kept whining to his son who's sound asleep. Her husband who came from village center, heard those nonstop whining and "did he come home here drunk? Your son won't stop drinking and you won't stop whining." he said in an irritated tone. He became sick of hearing those almost everyday. Even if his father whip him, Siva didn't stop drinking, so his father gave up after he learned that. His wife served him food and both went to sleep.
