Chapter 13 - A Good Patient

Jin's flashlight beam jittered with his hands as it scanned across the ruined structure.

"Okay… The nearest area had to be a playhouse…. Great.. This is the first place I have to check," he muttered, angling the cursed phone to capture both himself and the playhouse behind.

"Let's see, if the forgotten doll is here…" He said to both himself and the viewers, trying to keep the tremble out of his voice.

Jin then slowly approached the half-collapsed playhouse.

The count on the livestream remained steady, it was still just Xiao Hei on his cursed phone.

Jin Qiang stopped walking and stood at the threshold, squinting into the dark hollow inside.

The musty smell of rotting wood and old plastic wafted out. His phone trembled slightly in his grip, stream still live, the chats were still going off, but he had no time to read every single one as his focus was now at the small building in front of him that stood crookedly, like a drunk leaning on a lamppost, its once-cheerful pink paint peeled into long curling strips, flaking like dead skin

He waved his flashlight slowly, revealing that the childlike scribbles on the walls were made with crayons or markers, of stick figures with huge, empty eyes and smiles far too wide, that were now faded and warped, stretched across the walls like desperate memories begging not to be forgotten.

Jin ducked under the broken frame and stepped through the warped doorway.

The rotten wood creaked under his light footsteps.

The playhouse was even smaller than it looked.

The inside was barely wide enough to stand straight in, and was filled with forgotten toys that littered the dirt-covered floor, like broken teacups and toy utensils, a headless rocking horse, a once-pink chair that was now gray with grime.

And dolls…. That lay in corners like discarded corpses.

Some propped upright, others collapsed mid-motion, and their eyes stared, some glassy, some stitched, and some gouged out entirely.

"Jesus…." Jin whispered, as his breath got caught in his throat, at the creepy sight.

Then… he heard a soft sound.

Giggle.

He whipped the flashlight hurriedly to the left corner where it came from.

And there he saw... just more dolls shoved on a shelf.

[Alive – Live Chat]

[🥔PotatoChipKings: DID YOU HEAR THAT?!]

[🔥ItsYaBoy_123: This man just walked into an Annabelle fan meetup BY HIMSELF.]

[📹WTF_WasThat: Bruh. That was a giggle. I am OUT.]

[💀YeetMeNow: Did anyone else hear that second giggle??? Or am I haunted now.]

[Dead – Live Chat]

[🪑hauntedseat: One doll is missing a head. One's missing a name. Guess which one bites?]

[💋rottenkiss: Flashlight's shaking~ Is your hand or your soul breaking first?]

[🪦RIPinHD: LMAO rewind that flinch, instant classic 💀💀💀.]

[🧠404fear: OHHHHH HERE WE GO! FINALLY GETTIN' GOOD!!! 🔥]

His chest tightened. "Xiao Hei...?" He softly said.

No reply.

Then a certain doll caught his attention, amongst the ones on the shelf, there was a doll that sat alone at the right end with brown yarn hair, blue ceramic eyes, in a dirty yellow dress that made his skin crawl.

(Could it be…?)

Swoosh.

Jin turned around instinctively as he heard a quick shuffling sound behind him.

"Xiao Hei??...Do – Don't do this," he muttered, trying to stay calm as he could. "I'm not scared. I'm just annoyed now…"

Jin then turned back and slowly edged closer to the doll, staying alert as ever.

"Huu – It's just a doll, just a doll, looks creepy, yeah, but still a doll, just a very old, dirty, harmless doll…." He chanted under his breath as he slowly reached out for it.

And when his fingers brushed the doll's porcelain cheek.

DING!

[System: You have touched "Porcelain Annie – Retired." This is not the Forgotten Doll.]

"Ha – Don't tell me… I have to touch all the dolls here?"

HIHIHIHI~

Jin then jerked back as a loud giggle echoed through the playhouse from behind him.

He spun…. And there was nothing but the shadow of the doorframe.

He then turned back, and Annie now lay on her side.

Even though he hadn't moved her….

(What….. the... f*ck???!)

Then… his Ghosts Nearby counter blinked.

Ghosts Nearby: 2

"Nope!! Nope nope nope–" Jin backpedaled toward the door.

But before he could go out, the door slammed shut behind him with a resounding THUD.

"SH*T!!!" He yelped, surprised by the sudden thud.

And then, both of his flashlights started to flicker.

"NO! NOT NOW! Don't you f*cking dare—!" he shook and smacked the one he was holding once, twice, thrice, and then the light steadied… just in time to reveal a doll that sat at the gray-grimed chair.

Jin stood still in place and was silently staring at the doll.

(That wasn't there before…)

This one was small and was clad in a faded nurse outfit, its button eyes stitched in uneven sizes. The doll leaned against a wooden post, one arm missing, and had something like a sign tied around its neck.

 Creak… Creak…

The doll's head suddenly twitched….. Twice

"!!!" Jin, who had just stood still, felt chills up his spine and now felt like his body had frozen. His eyes had widened, his heart skipped a beat, and his breathing had stopped for a moment.

"Uh – Hello?? Ha.ha…. I come in peace…" Jin nervously said as he was still staring at the doll, waiting for it to move again.

But nothing happened…

Jin then slowly stepped towards the closed door, as he eyed the doll, believing it wouldn't move if he kept his eye on it.

When he reached the door, he tried to open it, pushing, pulling with all his might, but it didn't budge an inch….

"Ha – I have to touch it, don't I…." he muttered under his breath.

Jin didn't want to go near it, he didn't want to go near any dolls anymore, but he had to…

He glanced down at his phone, still frozen in place, wanting to check his live stream to see if Xiao Hei had sent any message.

[👻IDontDoGhosts: I hate dolls. I hate dolls. I HATE DOLLS.]

[🕯️FearAddict97: The moment the doll stands up, I'm logging off and calling my grandma.]

[🫠HauntMePlz: HELP I'm scared but I'm vibing so hard rn 😂]

[📍LostOnPurpose: OHHH THERE IT GOES~ IT MOVED!!!]

[🪡dollsnstuff_: Interact with it and I'll give you soul coins, Jin…]

[🧸bonelesshugz: DOLLHOUSE TRAUMA UNLOCKED 🧸🔓]

Jin swallowed hard.

"…Right. Gotta interact." His voice cracked again. "Of course I do."

He hesitantly approached the doll and then crouched down as he reached forward with trembling fingers.

"Okay, uh… hey there… I'm… I'm just gonna… pick you up… okay?" Jin muttered nervously as he tried to hold and lift the doll up, with his eyes closed.

[🪡dollsnstuff_: Donated 10 Soul Coins]

A minute has passed since he picked the doll up, and nothing happened.

Jin then opened his eyes and squinted at a little paper sign tied around its neck with an old red ribbon.

[NURSE MIMI]

"I give medicine! Want some?"

"…You've gotta be kidding me."

And as soon as Jin Qiang said that.

Creak –

A soft click sounded from behind him. Jin turned and noticed that one of the playhouse drawers had creaked open on its own.

And something round was peeking out from it.

Jin carefully dropped the doll back to it's seat and hesitantly walked over to check the drawer.

Inside it was a small bottle filled with... candy?

It was childlike, but the label was scratched out.

On the underside of the lid, written in smudged ink.

Take one. Only one. Or Nurse Mimi will be sad.

"Sad? Not mad right? Ha.ha…."

[Alive – Live Chat]

[🍬SpookySnaccs: TAKE THE CANDY. WHAT'S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN? 😅]

[😱RipCordReady: Jin, if you take two, I swear I'm mailing you holy water.]

[🎥GhostCamMoments: Nurse Mimi bout to prescribe eternal damnation 😭]

[Dead – Live Chat]

[🪦bitemytomb: One for the pain. Two for the grave.]

[💊murderpillz: Take two. Be bold. Be broken.]

[👁️foreversight: She's watching even when her eyes are buttons. Especially then.]

Jin dramatically turned his head to looked back at the doll….

It hadn't moved, but the air around it somehow felt heavier…. Or was he just imagining it?

"Just… one. Alright?" he whispered as he slowly took one candy.

"Ugh – I'll take a stomach ache over a haunted doll anytime…"

He then popped it in his mouth and just swallowed it whole like a tablet of medicine….

And within the few seconds it touched his tongue, he tasted dust and fake strawberries.

DING!

[System Notification]

[You have completed: Nurse Mimi's Request – A good patient follows the rules.]

[Reward: Clue #1/3 – The Forgotten Doll is alone and not here.]

Thud –

Just as the sound rang out, Mimi the doll had tipped over gently on the chair, like someone had breathed too close.

The drawer slid shut on its own.

And click — the door behind him creaked open a crack.

Jin didn't waste another second in there, as he dashed to the door, pushed it open, and stepped out of the playhouse in a hurry.

When he left the playhouse, about 15 steps away from it, Jin looked back at it and then checked on his stream. The camera footage then flickered, once, twice, and then stabilized.

And as he was checking the stream, he heard a sound from the darkness, giggles echoed, but louder this time… It seemed to bounce around the walls from within the playhouse, layered like multiple children laughing at once.

Ghosts Nearby: 6

The cursed phone screen then showed Jin's horrified face in the camera overlay, and behind him, just barely visible in the darkness, the playhouse door was wide open, and inside was the faint silhouette of all the dolls sitting in place...

Only now, they were all facing the door.

Porcelain Annie.

Nurse Mimi.

Even the headless rocking horse.

HIHIHIHI~

Then he heard another one…

But this time….. It didn't come from the playhouse behind him.

It came from the tree to his left…..

Jin Qiang slowly lowered his phone, a cold sweat on his temple trailing down his cheek as he stood frozen.

Then the next moment…..

Jin didn't even remember standing, as he was already running.
