Chapter 14 - A Moment Beside The Flicker

ELzan finally decided to break the awkwardness in the air.

Elzan: "So… umm, where did you get that scar?"

He glances at the figure, hoping for some kind of answer. But there's only silence. The Revenant simply turns its head forward, as if the question had floated right past it.

Elzan sighs, feeling foolish.

Elzan: "Right... dumb question. Sorry."

He rubs the back of his neck, embarrassed. For a moment, only the crackling of the nearby fire fills the room.

But then, the Revenant raises its hand slowly, touching the jagged scar that ran across its side, right beneath the armor plates. It didn't speak. Instead, it drew a shape on the floor with its finger. An invisible line in the dust, long and straight, then suddenly broken halfway through.

Elzan frowned, leaning closer.

Elzan: "A... a blade? You were struck down?"

The Revenant's hand paused. Then, it nodded once.

Elzan: "Oh… I see…"

The Revenant lies back. It seems so exhausted, Elzan thought. The two sat beside the fireplace, the crackle of burning wood filling the quiet air.

Elzan leaned back, arms resting on his knees, glancing sideways at the silent figure.

Elzan: "So… how is it like being a legend?"

The Revenant didn't answer immediately. It simply stared into the flames, the firelight casting long shadows across its cracked, bone-like mask.

Then, finally, it spoke…

Revenant: "Heavy…"

Its voice was rough and low.

Elzan blinked in surprise, not just from the answer, but from the voice itself. He must be the first person to hear the voice of the legend itself, he thought. It wasn't quite what he had expected. Neither deep like a soldier's growl, nor sharp like a commander's bark. It sat somewhere in between, worn down by time and suffering.

He chuckled softly, poking the fire with a stick.

Elzan: "I see… Must be really tough…"

The two sat still beside the orange flames. Elzan glances at the Revenant and notices how it is staring at the flames, its eyes filled with emptiness. Seeing the Revenant like this is not as his expectation.

On second thought, he remembered when the Revenant had saved him before.

Elzan: "... Remember when you saved me before?"

The Revenant doesn't respond. It doesn't even flinch. Just keeps staring at the fire, like it's watching something only it can see.

Elzan: "I-I wanted to thank you for saving me that time… I'd be a dead man if you didn't show up…"

The Revenant remains silent.

Elzan: "Oh and, m-my name is Elzan… it's my mistake that I didn't introduce myself in the first place…"

Elzan brushes his neck with his hand. The figure didn't say anything but glanced at him.

Elzan: "D-Do you perhaps have a name that I could call you? Or should I just call you Sir Revenant?"

The figure turned its head back toward the fire. Elzan swallowed, wondering if the question had been too much, or if the Revenant simply didn't want to answer.

Elzan: "My apologies... Then I shall call you Sir Revenant."

Just then, a faint whisper broke the silence.
