Chapter 89: Echoes Beneath the Stars

---

Night fell gently over Hoshikawa City, wrapping the city in a veil of serenity. Street lamps flickered to life, their warm glow casting long shadows across the sidewalks. The rooftop of the school had become a sanctuary once more. This time, it wasn't just Naoto and Rika. Souta Aizawa stood there as well, leaning against the railing with his hands in his pockets, staring up at the darkened sky littered with stars.

Naoto sat with his back against the wall, his legs pulled up loosely. Rika stood near the edge, gazing out into the skyline as if searching for answers in the distance. Silence passed between the three like a sacred rhythm, calm yet loaded.

"It feels like we've come full circle," Souta muttered, breaking the silence.

Rika glanced at him. "Yeah. But somehow, everything feels different now."

Naoto didn't speak. He closed his eyes for a moment, listening to their voices, the distant hum of cars, and the subtle breeze that teased his hair.

Rika turned to face them both. "Have you ever wished time would stop?"

Souta raised an eyebrow. "All the time."

"Even now?" she asked.

He looked at her seriously, then smiled. "Especially now."

Naoto opened his eyes and stood up. "We can't stop time. But we can hold onto moments like these. Keep them somewhere safe."

Rika let out a bitter laugh. "Like memories? Memories fade. Even the important ones."

Naoto looked at her intently. "Then we remind ourselves why they mattered in the first place."

There was something haunting in the way he said it. Rika could feel the weight behind his words, as if he was speaking not just to her, but to himself.

The next day arrived with the same quietness. Hoshikawa High bustled with students, unaware of the emotional undercurrents flowing just beneath their feet.

Naoto visited his mother at the hospital again. She had grown quieter recently, her body weaker. But her eyes still sparkled with the warmth of a mother's love.

"Are you eating well?" she asked with a gentle smile.

"Trying to," he replied, setting a small flower vase on the window sill.

She noticed the flower. "Cherry blossoms… They were always your favorite."

Naoto nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "They remind me of when things were simple. When dad was still around. When we… laughed more."

His mother reached for his hand. "Laughter doesn't vanish, Naoto. It just hides when things get hard."

He tightened his grip. "Mom… were you happy?"

She blinked slowly. "With your father? With you? Yes. Even in the painful times. Love isn't always about joy. Sometimes, it's just about staying."

Naoto leaned in, whispering, "Then I'll stay too. For as long as I can."

Later that week, the friend group gathered for a small picnic at the riverside. Blankets were spread. The sun dipped low, casting everything in a golden hue. Mei, Aiko, Haruto, Yuuji, and the others all sat together, laughter filling the air.

Rika sat apart from them at first, staring at the water. Souta noticed and quietly joined her.

"Hey," he said softly.

"Hey," she replied, glancing at him.

"Want some juice?" he offered.

She smiled faintly. "Thanks."

They sipped quietly. Then she said, "Do you think this is what peace feels like?"

Souta considered it. "Maybe. Or maybe it's just us pretending the world isn't heavy."

Rika nodded. "Still... pretending helps sometimes."

He looked at her. "Rika. If you ever need someone to carry that weight, I'm here."

She blinked, surprised. "Why?"

"Because you matter. Not just to Naoto. Not just to your father. To me. As Rika. Not anyone else's version of you."

Something cracked inside her chest. She didn't cry. But she smiled—a real one this time.

---

That night, Naoto received a phone call from Himari.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"Trying to be," he said.

"It's not your job to carry everything alone, you know?"

"I know. But some promises... I can't break."

She was quiet for a moment. "I miss you."

Naoto closed his eyes. "I miss you too."

Their silence said more than words ever could.

---

As the days passed, the arc of tension and grief started to close, like a book being read slowly to its final chapter. The truth about Naoto's job, his mother's health, and his connection to the Hayato family all found closure in quiet, emotional moments. Each character carried scars. But each scar was now acknowledged.

And as spring approached, cherry blossoms began to bloom once more—just like in the beginning. Only this time, everyone was just a little more grown up.
