Tanjiro initially thought the scar was from a Demon Slayer, but Kyogai's words indicated otherwise.

Tanjiro recalled Ryuji's skill of standing on water at the Natagumo Mountain waterfall. He had learned from Ryuji and Sakonji Urokodaki, understanding the rhythm and method of breathing.
He had successfully stood on water, though not as freely as Ryuji. If he focused, he could do it.
Tanjiro successfully used the pages to adjust his position in mid-air.
Each step created a small splash. He was overjoyed.

Using the pages, Tanjiro used the ninth form of Water Breathing.

The Ninth Form, Splashing Water Flow, Turbulent, is gentler and requires less force, not needing the entire foot.
Using the pages, Tanjiro approached Kyogai, easily dodging his attacks.
Seeing his attacks easily dodged, and Tanjiro seemingly unaffected by the spatial manipulation, Kyogai panicked.
"Imagine yourself on water. Finish this!" Tanjiro's fighting spirit ignited.
