Mia drove into the small farming town of Auraville Kansas. Population 23,980 people. She saw the small town come over the horizon. She is driving listening to the song You're going to go far kid by The Offspring. She tapped the steering wheel as she drove past the sign saying. "Welcome to Auraville. Keep an open mind." She is sighing. She just been told that a lot from her recruiters and Chief Wilson from when she talked to him on the phone.
Driving into the town she stops at the station. She sits there in her car. Mia looked into the review mirror and saw her face. Mia has red hair and freckled skin. Blue eyes. She has adjusted her dress. It was a dress that was yellow her best color. She turned off the car and got out looking around.
"Quite the town for sure." Mia said to herself before she walked into the station. The station looked like it was out of a small-town sitcom. Mia walked up to the front desk.
"Hello welcome to Auraville police department how can I help you?" A nice-looking woman to asked as she looked at me.
"Yes, I am Officer Mia Young. I am here to see Chief Wilson." Mia said as she stood there being her five foot being.
"Ah yes the Chief is waiting for you, please wait and I will get an officer to get you." The woman explained to Mia. Mia walked to the seats and waited.
"You the new Officer?" A male voice asked from behind Mia as she sat in the middle of the room.
"Yeah, I am who are you?" Mia asked turning around to see who was talking. She saw a tall man walking out of the station wearing a black trench coat, gray dress shirt, ripped black jeans, and from what she can see gloves.
"Officer Young?" A different male voice said as he walked into the main lobby. The man is an older man with salt and pepper hair. He has a belly to him barely, but it is there. Mia got up and walked up.
"Yes, that is me, what is your name?" Mia asked as she stood there.
"Jordan, nice to meet you." Jordan said with a slight smile. "Follow me please." Mia followed Jordan through the station as they walked, she felt the eyes lock on her. She isn't dressed like an officer because she hasn't official started; she just got her post and still need to get her apartment and items. Jordan knocked on the door of Chief Wilson office.
"Come in." A deep booming voice said Jordan walked into the office.
"Officer Young is here sir." Jordan said as she walked behind Jordan. Chief Wilson motion for Mia to go into the office. Jordan left and shut the door behind him. Chief Johnathon "Johnny" Wilson is an older black man that has scars on his hands and face. Clearly a man that has seen combat like her. "Army or Navy" Mia thinks.
"Please sit." Chief Wilson said as he pointed to the chair. Mia sat down.
"Mia Rose Young, age 32, former Merine Medic. Got all the way to Gunner
Sargent." Chief Wilson read from his monitor before he kept going. "Tell me why you chose this little town of ours?"
"Sir I wanted a different setting, so I left my city and chose this little town."
Mia explained as she sat straight.
"Yes, I know from when we spoke two weeks ago, I was hoping your answer would change." Chief Wilson said as he rubbed his face.
"Sorry my answer didn't change." Mia said confuse as she looked at him clearly confuse why he isn't happy with her answer. Chief Wilson went back to reading.
"Says here you have PTSD and depression; you got that from your service?" Chief Wilson asked as he looked back at Mia.
"Yes, sir PTSD from my time in the service and being shot in a warzone. The Depression is from the fact I couldn't save them all, survivor's guilt is a bitch." Mia explained as she looked down at the floor.
"I know your pain I was in the army before being medical discharge just like you." Chief Wilson said with a lower calmer tone. Mia looked up at Chief getting a good understanding. "You sure you can still be here?"
"Yes, sir I am sure that I can still be a dam good officer." Mia said with a bought a confidence that was almost contagious. She sat there looking at Chief Wilson.
"You sure your mental health issues won't be a problem?" Chief Wilson asks as he sat there looking at Mia with a critical eye.
"No sir I can control my issues just fine." Mia said as she looks like she told herself that in the mirror a few times.
"Okay I will trust you, Officer Young." Chief Wilson said as he stood up. "Follow me." Mia got up and walk out of the office with Chief Wilson. Chief Wilson took Mia out to the main room of the station. It had desk all over the place with old school computers and some had laptops that look slightly newer. The Chief spoke with his booming voice. "Everyone come meets a recruit."
Mia stood there watching them gather around them. She felt small around them because she is the smallest one there standing at five feet.
"Chief we are recruiting children now?" A man with black hair and a beard.
"I don't know I am sure I can drop you just like the rest I dropped in the past." I said with a smile.
"Aw probe has bark. But does she have bite?" The man said clearly trying to get a reaction.
"Rogers enough she is here to stay!" Chief Wilson barked making him quiet. "As you met that is Rogers, he is a one of the older officers but still good at his job sometimes." Chief Wilson explained to Mia. The rest of the officers looked at her with wonder. Mia saw Jordan standing there but he was in uniform this time.
"So, you did become an Officer Mia." Jordan said with a smile.
"Yup I did." Mia said proud of herself.
"Officer Young starts Monday she has a lot to get done. I expect you all to be welcoming to her." Chief Wilson said with a boom to his voice. Mia smiled seeing she is one of a few female officers at the station.
"Mail time!" A young and chipper voice said as a man walked into the room with a mail bag. He passed the mail off to different people before stopping in front of Mia.
"This is all for you." He said to her as he passed her a purple envelope. It had a rune symbol on the back on a wax seal. Mia saw there was no return address. Just blank with the name Mia written on it. Mia held it up to the light and saw that the there was no power or anything just a letter.
"Of course she got a welcoming letter from him." Rogers said clearly annoyed. This is a regular thing. Mia opened the letter and saw a card. She opened it.
"Welcome to the force. Keep an open mind." Runic. Who is this Runic she thought to herself. Clearly, he is known in this town. Mia looked up at the group and asked. "Who is Runic?"
