Chapter 158 - Chapter 156: Gin, Don’t Milk Anymore

Gin didn't give Jiangxia much information.

This mission to assassinate Reika Yotsui was originally assigned to Jiangxia on a trial basis.

Gin had no problem with Jiangxia's habit of casting a wide net and killing people randomly—actually, he kind of liked it. But at the same time, as a busy member of the organization, Gin gradually felt that Ouzo's behavior was a bit wasteful.

Anyway, Ouzo just wanted to satisfy his desire to kill and sharpen his skills on the side. If someone else could kill the target, then it's better to let him do it—less burden on the organization and two birds with one stone.

Also, when the organization was evaluating Jiangxia's promotion to full member status, they checked his background.

After looking into him, Gin found Jiangxia's network was pretty extensive—especially among middle-aged and elderly women, and people with pets at home. He had a good reputation and had even managed to get in touch with some rich or important people.

So Gin figured it'd be better to give Jiangxia some less sensitive assassination targets to practice on. If he could handle them, great; if not, the organization would step in.

From Gin's perspective, the current mission to kill Reika Yotsui was more suitable.

Recently, the organization wanted to find Yotsui Reika's father to cooperate with him. But along the way, there was a competitor who threatened the chairman of the Yotsui family with Reika.

Reika Yotsui was his only daughter. Chairman Yotsui was very protective of her and started to waver—he was even thinking about finalizing a deal with the threatening party.

For the organization, there were many solutions, but Gin picked the simplest—kill Reika Yotsui.

The competitors had no threat targets, so no leverage. Once that factor was removed, the company packaged by the organization would have a clear advantage to win the project.

Jiangxia didn't know the messy inside story with motives that rivaled cases from the Detective Conan universe. He didn't care either; he just thought being a regular member seemed like a good side gig where he could boost his record without too much effort.

Jiangxia took the task and handed the photo back to Gin, eyeing the gun.

He carefully said, "By the way, it seems you forgot to send me this..." He pointed at the gun in Gin's hand.

Gin paused for a moment, then looked at him and said, "Since you've chosen your current life, you'd better give up killing people face-to-face. The risk is too high."

Jiangxia: "I didn't plan to kill anyone directly…"

Gin nodded thoughtfully—not murder, but self-defense?

He seemed to get it and sneered, "Is someone following you?"

It's normal for a detective to be intimidated or retaliated against. But this person actually found the head of an organization member.

Gin crushed his cigarette and said gloomily, "For you, carrying a gun is not the best way to defend yourself. Even if you manage a counter-kill, it's easy to get sued—and even your reputation will take a hit. People will always see you as a murderer, even if it's self-defense. That's a permanent stain on 'The Great Detective' and will stop you from climbing higher."

"For those who threaten you, handle them the way you usually do. If you can't kill them yourself, send me the list."

Gin explained it was understandable—Ouzo's killing method was clever, but had obvious flaws. First, to kill a specific target, you need intelligence—at least some knowledge of their social network.

Also, Ouzo needed to get close to the target to affect them.

And those aiming to "kill the detective" aren't going to sit down for tea like the clients who fell into Ouzo's traps before—they can't be reached or manipulated. Those targets are difficult.

"..." Jiangxia was speechless. Why did he feel Gin's brain was massive from all the mental gymnastics? He just wanted a gun. "No one's after me yet. If there is, I'll report it in time... I just think guns are more practical."

Vodka couldn't hold back, muttering, "Practical? But if it's not for killing, not for self-defense, what else could it be for… You don't think it's just to look cool, do you?"

Jiangxia: "..."

Vodka was driving smoothly but suddenly the mood got cold behind him.

He looked up, agitated, just in time to catch Jiangxia's unimpressed look in the rearview mirror. Vodka's voice dropped: "No, I'm just saying casually…"

Then he stared straight ahead, pretending nothing happened.

Gin: "..."

He glanced sideways at Jiangxia, who was still calm, clearly showing the expression of "Vodka's talking nonsense."

But Gin thought about Ouzo's fancy tricks and dramatic cases and had a feeling that this time, Vodka might be right.

If a random subordinate asked him for a gun just because it was "handsome," Gin would use the gun to smash their heads.

But Ouzo...

It's normal for geniuses to have flaws. Ouzo just needed experience. If he could do everything perfectly from the start, Gin would be suspicious.

And now, the young subordinate was improving day by day under his guidance, slowly approaching perfection. It gave Gin the feeling he was "grooming a powerful tool tailored for the organization."

Waste is to be treated like waste.

But talents with high potential and adaptability deserve proper treatment.

Ouzo's achievements over time had proven his skills.

What was rarer was that Ouzo's personality seemed better than most members—he was persuadable and calm. Every time Gin thought about it, he believed if everyone were like Ouzo, his workload could be cut at least in half.

Ouzo was originally brought up by him. Although Bourbon took an interest along the way, recently Gin tested and found Bourbon didn't even know Ouzo's existence.

In other words, he didn't even know that Ouzo was given a code name still. Although Bourbon helped him, Ouzo's loyalties weren't with Bourbon.

Gin thought about this and felt even more satisfied. Ouzo's choice to hide his code name was wise. For a member like him, with some exposure, a fixed residence, and a regular workplace, keeping the rest of the organization's secrecy intact was important. If one link broke, it could cause a chain reaction.

This kind of rational self-awareness, acting accordingly without ego, was rare. It showed that although Ouzo would inevitably make some typical youthful mistakes, most of the time he was very reliable...
