053: "God-Given Ability: Fetter Transform"
Forest Camp Kitchen
Among the three disguised chefs busy peeling potatoes, the purple-red-haired woman stared through the narrow kitchen window at the group of students joyfully opening their Poké Balls.
This woman none other than Jessie of Team Rocket—was seething with ghostly Will-O-Wisp-like resentment, her aura practically glowing with rage.
"Arrghhh!!! Why—WHY?!"
"Why didn't we realize earlier that those boxes contained the Poké Balls meant for distribution to the students?!"
"You have to understand, we disguised ourselves as chefs and infiltrated the summer camp with the sole mission of stealing those Pokémon. We literally had them in our hands earlier and instead of stealing them, we delivered them to the kids like good little camp workers!"
"As elite operatives directly under Boss Giovanni, members of Team Rocket's Special Forces Unit, how could we mess this up so badly? We squandered a golden opportunity!"
Emotionally overwhelmed, Jessie grabbed the shoulder of her companion and shook him violently.
"Jessie, enough! My shoulder's about to pop out!" James, the short-haired man with a center part and a gentle face, cried out as he winced in pain.
"Would you two calm down? You're going to draw attention to us," Meowth warned, standing on a nearby crate with arms crossed.
"It was just a Crisna-level blunder, alright? No one could've predicted that the moment we entered camp, the Poké Balls would be placed right in front of us meow!"
"Now, let's rework our strategy. I believe we still have a chance to reclaim those Pokémon all of them meow!"
In the kitchen, the squat, hunched-over chef Meowth in disguise took charge as the team's de facto strategist.
"Easy for you to say," Jessie grumbled as she adjusted the chef's hat on her head. "Those Pokémon have already been distributed to the campers. It's not going to be easy collecting them all now."
"Don't panic. I've already come up with a new battle plan meow," Meowth replied with a sinister gleam in his eyes, clearly pleased with himself.
"Of course you have, oh evil sage of Team Rocket," James said with genuine excitement. "What's the plan?"
"I am a certified evil genius meow," Meowth purred with pride, puffing up his chest.
WHACK
"Cut the ego and spill it!" Jessie snarled, landing a sharp fist to the top of Meowth's head.
"Alright, alright, calm down! The new battle plan is…"

Meanwhile, in the camp clearing...
"System, scan this Froakie's data," Ash said in a low voice, eyes locked on the little blue frog Pokémon before him. A deep intuition stirred within his heart, and he wanted confirmation.

"Just as I thought!" Ash whispered, eyes wide as the scanned data displayed on the translucent interface.
Seeing God-Given Ability: Fetter Transform listed after Froakie's main abilities confirmed his hunch. But it was the note under the S (Peerless) potential that made his breath catch:
"Favored by the fate of the Kalos Region. Destined to shoulder the burden of salvation when Kalos faces a catastrophic crisis."
Had it been any other kind of scan result, Ash might've doubted the conclusion. But with this two unmistakable flags stood out, connecting the dots clearly for him.
Ash was now 100% certain the Froakie standing before him was the same Pokémon he had bonded with in the future during his journey through the Kalos Region in the original timeline.
Back then, this very Froakie had a fiercely independent personality. He repeatedly disobeyed the commands of his previous Trainers in battle and even chose to abandon them, distancing himself from any human who failed to earn his respect. It wasn't until the Garchomp incident where Ash fearlessly intervened during a rampage atop Prism Tower that Froakie saw something different in him. It was in that moment, amidst danger and determination, that Froakie chose Ash as his Trainer.
After rigorous training and emotional growth, Froakie evolved into Frogadier, and eventually into Greninja. In the heat of the Kalos League, he unlocked the rare and mysterious Bond Phenomenon, triggering Ash-Greninja transformation—a power so intense it synchronized his aura with Ash's, increasing his strength to rival even Mega Evolutions. With this, he unleashed his signature move, the Golden Healing Water Shuriken, during the finals of the Kalos League, where he fought valiantly but was ultimately defeated by Alain's Mega Charizard X.
Later, during the crisis of Kalos' destruction, Ash-Greninja played a key role. With his unique visual perception and acute sensitivity to energy flow, he detected the leyline-disrupting vines corrupted by negative energy remnants of Team Flare's twisted ambitions. His heightened frog-eye perspective allowed him to identify these threats before they surfaced.
Ultimately, Greninja's destiny led him to be summoned by Zygarde, one of Kalos' three legendary guardians, the protector of order and balance. Recognizing his value, Zygarde requested Greninja's help in purifying the land and eliminating the remaining chaos a role only he could fulfill.
Looking now at this partner fated like Pikachu to walk alongside him Ash felt a surge of emotion and momentarily found himself speechless.
After taking a breath, Ash finally stepped forward, crouched down to meet Froakie at eye level, smiled warmly, and extended a hand.
"Froakie, nice to meet you. I'm Ash~"
Froakie, who had remained still since emerging from the Poké Ball, locked eyes with Ash's sincere gaze. After a brief moment of stillness, a subtle smile formed at the corner of Froakie's mouth.
"Froak~" the Bubble Frog Pokémon chirped softly. Then, lifting one white glove-like hand, Froakie clasped Ash's hand in a warm, familiar shake like two old friends reunited after a long time apart.
"Froakie, our journey to the top begins right here from this very summer camp."
Ash's voice was full of conviction as he looked his new partner in the eyes.
"Froak!" Froakie nodded solemnly.
Though no spoken words were needed, Ash and Froakie communicated effortlessly an innate understanding passed between them. Even without invoking Aura or the Power of Viridian Forest, Froakie grasped the meaning in Ash's heart with ease.
"Wow~ Ash, you and Froakie already have such strong chemistry!" Xiaolan exclaimed, watching the interaction with admiration. The other students nearby were just as amazed.
While the Pokémon they'd received were all carefully bred and matched to novice Trainers by the League and Professor Oak's Lab, building mutual trust and forming a real connection wasn't something that happened instantly.
It was clear Ash's bond with Froakie was something special.
"Haha, to be honest, I don't know why," Ash replied with a sheepish grin. "Maybe Froakie and I just clicked right away."

"Alright, young Trainers," Professor Oak called out, stepping forward with his clipboard, "now that each of you has received your summer camp Pokémon partner..."
"I'll give you thirty minutes to get acquainted. After that, we'll begin our first official summer camp challenge."
"This will be a points-based activity"
