Chapter 44 - The devil you know is better than the angel you don't.

Zane's POV

Even though I don't have all of his memories, I can still feel the pain he carried...buried deep in his chest and now nestled in mine as if it had always belonged there. It's like an echo that never fades, only grows louder the more I try to ignore it.

"I'm sorry, Zane."

Those words came from Alfie, and I swear I nearly died from the shock.

Was I dreaming? Did Alfie the terrifying, cold-blooded Alpha just apologize to me?

"I'm sorry for hurting you," he repeated, his voice low, rough, yet somehow steady. His gaze remained locked with mine, and it rendered me utterly speechless. His hands still held mine, warm and firm like he was afraid I'd vanish if he let go. "I would never have hit you if I knew you were suffering from injuries. I never wanted to even purnish you from the onset but rather protect you."

What?

What is going on?

Why does he sound… sincere?
