"When's my adaptation gonna be done, anyway?" Zephyr's voice complained as he walked through the dimly lit alleys of New York City. "How much time is left?"

[It's already complete,] Nix replied, its tone blunt and almost dismissive, making Zephyr's eyes widen in shock.

"What? Then why didn't you tell me? And hold on—why don't I feel any different? Shouldn't I be seeing mana or something?" His questions spilled out as he slowed his pace, grappling with Nix's words.

[Not precisely,] Nix answered. [There is a vast difference between adaptation and awakening,] it spoke, causing Zephyr's mind to race with questions.

[Adaptation is the ability to coexist, the ability that allows you to change and be consistent with the conditions of any environment. But awakening is the fundamental use of mana which coexists around us. Think of it like this—when a fish is thrown inside of water, it uses the water to breathe but mostly to increase its state and movement—that is an awakening. But when it is taken out and evolves it is able to breathe straight air—which is currently impossible— but that is adaptation. An awakening is the use of what is in the environment, and adaptation is the change the species goes through when that environment is changed to preserve survival. But the only difference is—you don't change because of survival but because of weakness.]

Zephyr felt too overwhelmed by this new information. As he moved his body toward the front of what looked to be a food truck, "Hot dog, please," he spoke. The man inside quickly fixed his order and handed it to him.

As he walked to his apartment, Zephyr continued to look around at the beauty of a city that was so much spoken about in his old reality, and no matter how much he tried, he just couldn't help but acknowledge the towering buildings that stood above him, standing on lengths so high that his head would find itself gazing upward and looking like he was some type of overly attractive foreigner.

"So what does that mean?" His question was delayed.

[It means your body could always use mana; all I did was restrict it.]

"Then why did my body need to adapt?"

[Zephyr, when your body adapts to anything that proves as a weakness, its goal is not to survive using that particular environment, but it is to be able to survive without it.]

"So I don't need mana?" he asked, his mouth fully stuffed with the food he was eating.

[Yes,] Nix spoke. [Instead of needing the mana from the environment, your body makes a substitute—something not of the environment.]

"So I…"

[Yes, your body creates its own.]

______

"So what do we do?" Zephyr asked as his distance was nearing the location of his apartment.

[You awaken,] Nix replied, his voice sounding casual and usually too humane. [But due to the capabilities of your new supply, I am truly unaware of how your body will react. And as I said, when your body adapts, it refuses to use the conditions of the atmosphere since it deems it weak, so the mana it's currently producing is that of a much greater scale, more potent than that of the environment. The only reason I can prevent the mana from forcefully awakening you is because it is still at its earliest stages of building up. Suggestion: find an empty area to awaken—recommended to go to the previously abandoned stadium.]

Zephyr sighed almost loudly when he heard this, for all he wanted today was to rest. Yet, even with his sighing self, even with the words spoken by his mind's voice, his expression hid no intent. As his smile widened, the only feeling that seemed to show strongly was the feeling of joy and disbelief, the feeling that tainted the traits of what his true self would never admit—fear. Yet, even then, he knew that it tasted too good to be left unchecked. So he changed his direction, moving to a place he knew was far, moving to change and truly become what all would deemed inevitable.

________

Standing in the middle of what humans would deem—pure darkness, in a stadium without any form of light as his body was embraced by its absence. Yet his eyes remained unaffected, as their irises shined with a strange, faint blue glow—Zephyr could see.

"Is this okay?" his voice asked in wonder, as concern was visible in the depth of his expression.

[It should be,] Nix spoke. [But worry not, for this should be safe… I think.] Zephyr smacked his head in surrender as his voice protested with a sound of a manly sigh.

[Trust me, it will be fine,] it said. [You ready?]

"No," his voice fluttered.

[3… 2… 1.] Zephyr shut his eyes swiftly, as his body expected some type of looming pain. Yet nothing.

Nothing but the sounds of empty dusk. "Ehh… you sure thi…" His words came to a halt as pain unimaginable surged through his being. It was painful—probably the most painful pain he had ever felt—yet it only lasted a second.

THUD!

His body, as if in response, fell to the cold, darkened ground—turning unconscious, leaving only a third of his consciousness to acknowledge the events that had transpired.

___[Elsewhere in America]

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, just get me a sandwich," a man who was lying in an oversized bed in a large room spoke through his phone.

[{Fuck you, Christopher,}] spoke the person on the other End. [{I'm not your fucking waiter.}]

"Come on, Mom, please," his voice felt sleepy as his body lay in the comfort of the blankets that covered him whole. "Look, I promise, I'll do it when I get…" His eyes suddenly widened as his body launched up from its lay. The force he produced was so strong that it destroyed the sheets and all that stood within five feet. His arms were raised in defense as the feeling he had suddenly felt completely disappeared. It was strong, too strong, even if it had only lasted a second. [{Christopher… what's happening? Is everything all right?}] the voice rang from the other side. He picked up his now-fallen phone from the ground, placing it on his ear. "Yeah… I'll call you later," he spoke.

He was sure, he couldn't mistake it… even though it was quick, even though it was only for a second, he felt it—he felt… danger. It was too much.

___[Elsewhere in America]

In an office that housed the top of a skyscraper, standing almost 6.6 feet in height, a monster that looked like a man gazed his vision through the indoor windows that overlooked the city that lay below.

"Hahahahaha!"

The monster began to laugh as his large blonde hair remained unshaken. The glass of wine that he held started cracking—not because of the strength his hand produced, not because of the failure to hold up the red water of pure delight, but because of the aura that released from the being who held up its opening. "Laura," he whispered, as a tall, petite woman moved close. "Arrange a car," his words finished. As he drew close the almost-shattered glass in his hand and drank from its base, "Make it quick."
