Chapter 252 - Just a body

Anna's father looked at her with pride in his eyes.

"Keep thinking that, daughter. It's taken too long. You'll find the truth."

They stood there, watching Sarah being walled up, as she begged for mercy.

 She asked for forgiveness and wished Anna would shoot her in the head. When the last brick was left to be laid, and she disappeared inside, she screamed;

"Jenna! It was Jenna!" Her voice came out muffled because of the cubicle, but they understood perfectly what she had said.

Anna turned in surprise to her father. His countenance turned grim. Anna had to warn Jenna. She didn't know why she would steal the diary, but she didn't want to see her tortured by her father. She knew he didn't really love Jenna. He wouldn't think twice about hurting her. She even thought that at that moment, in those few seconds, he had already planned everything he was going to do to her.

"She's lying, Daddy. Just like she lied about you being Thiago's father and..." Anna said to see his reaction.

"I want you to stay here, in this house, after you've put the steel plate over the wall, and tow the wall away tomorrow. Don't bother with the moaning and wailing. If you prefer, bring a radio and turn it up loud." He said, ignoring Anna's words, and took her hand, pulling her away.

Anna realized that he was leading her back to the car, but she couldn't keep quiet. She had to help Jenna.

"Daddy... You can't do anything against Jenna."

"I can't?" He stopped, turning to Anna with curious eyes.

"Daddy... She was my friend. She told me about you and Mom. She was faithful to Mom, and she loves you. Don't do anything against her, please."

Anna's father remained silent, appraising his daughter.

"Do you think what she did is any less serious than what Sarah did?"

"Yes. You have to recognize that when you were in the hands of the other boss, she was your only contact with the world. And she obeyed you blindly, she faced death because she knew that Allister or Adam could kill her at any moment. Sarah is a ruthless killer and a traitor. She didn't show up for both of them!"

"She did as Sarah did, to marry me. And you're wrong. I think Jenna really had the impression that I was there against my will, because I never told her the truth."

 "What truth?"

"That I was under the thumb of this boss because I wasn't very young at the time and I wanted to understand how the mafia world worked for him. I needed to prosper, Anna. I needed power. And that's something you only get when you have money. My ally, Maxwell, would come to my rescue if I sent a distress call, but I signaled that everything was fine, and they let me stay. And then I won the loyalty of the men who worked for him and had access to all the information, about werewolves and about Max. Everything I didn't already know. How to kill one of them, for example. In the end, he was my prisoner and I didn't even realize it... I only regret having stayed away from you to achieve this. But he really did have the resources to find us and kill us if I ran away. And since I never knew what card he had up his sleeve, I decided it was better not to risk your safety."

"Ah Papa... I know it can't have been easy for you, living in luxurious captivity while I, your daughter, was right in the wolves' den. With them wanting to tear me apart at every turn. It was so much fun for me! That's why I'm asking you, in memory of Mom, who, by the way, was the only person you loved in this life, to leave Jenna alone."

"Ah, Anna! If it was your mother, the only person I've ever loved, who was asking me, I'd do it, but you're not her, right? But I promise, in memory of your mother, I won't torture Jenna, and I'll give her a peaceful death."

"Why can't you let her live? Isn't it too heavy a punishment to kill her for so little?"

"Don't you ever learn, my child? Jenna stole her mother's story. Everything there was to know about her was there, in that diary. I can't forgive her. I left it in her care so that I could understand her later. Jenna stole it from both of us. Anna, haven't you ever wondered where your mother was buried?"

"I thought the body was taken to her family..."

"Taken to a dead family? Do you really think that Dester, who loved her as much as I did, would allow it to be like that? Your mother was supposed to have a burial fit for a queen, and Jenna robbed us of that, too."

 "What do you mean?"

"Do you think I married Jenna because I loved her? I married her to find out what became of your mother's body. And she refuses to tell me. She won't even let me bring it up. I knew I'd have to kill her for it one day, and now she's given the final reason."

 "She stole Mom's body?"

"She disappeared with it, without a trace."

"But then... Jenna told me that you saw Mom dead... She said that you had sent the men to dispose of the body... I remember her mentioning that detail in one of our conversations."

"Yes, I did, Anna. And to this day, I keep that moment in my memory. But I couldn't pay attention to her at the time and delegated it to my men. And when I asked where she was buried, they couldn't tell me. Jenna had taken the lead and taken the body to some unknown place."

"Why do you care so much? It was just a body."

"Because I live to this day, with the hope that your mother, at some point, will find a way to come back, and she'll find me again... It's like she's still alive. And I think I feel that way, not having a grave to visit. Jenna has left me living in a fantasy all these years."

"Let me ask her, what did she do with Mom's body? I know she'll tell me. And forgive her, as soon as she does. She's a good person. Perhaps she kept it to herself because the truth might hurt you even more. What reason would she have to hide a body? If she hasn't, there's something bad about this burial."
