Chapter 70: My Medallion Isn't Vibrating, Which Means There Are No Sorceresses Nearby
Lynn instinctively gripped the silver sword on his back.
But in his vision, apart from the rustling dust falling down, there was nothing else.
This strong tremor came quickly and went quickly.
Before long, the shaking stopped.
Lynn quickly pulled open the villa door and looked outside.
Outside, the wind was calm, the world was peaceful, and nothing had happened.
It seemed that the tremor just now was only limited to the villa itself.
And it didn't affect the outside.
No wonder the neighbors hadn't felt anything unusual.
"The whole house was shaking, but no evil spirit appeared, and my medallion didn't react either."
"Alright, first we can rule out a lesser earth elemental."
Lesser earth elementals were remnants, brought by the Conjunction of the Spheres.
Their behavior and appearance were similar to human children, and like children, they enjoyed playing pranks.
Sometimes, the haunting of houses in the city might not be ghosts, but the work of lesser earth elementals.
But lesser earth elementals could at most create some small noises to scare people; they couldn't shake an entire house like this.
As for what it actually was,
Lynn had to continue investigating to find out.
The house didn't look like it had been abandoned for a long time. In fact, the previous owner had left many things in the house, not having had time to pack them up before leaving.
Lynn drew his silver sword and slowly searched upwards from the first floor to the third floor, and then back down to the first floor.
He searched very carefully, not even letting go of the corners.
And during his entire search, the house would still shake a few times from time to time.
But the medallion never reacted, and no evil spirit emerged to attack him.
When Lynn returned to the first floor again, he felt very strange.
Because he hadn't found anything unusual.
When he first entered this house, Lynn had discovered that the house actually had a basement.
Since the problem wasn't upstairs, there was only one possibility: it came from downstairs.
Lynn noticed a layer of salt spread out in front of the stairs leading to the basement.
It looked like the previous owner had tried to use salt to drive away ghosts.
At certain times, salt could indeed be useful.
But it was clear that what was disturbing this house wasn't a ghost.
Therefore, the salt was essentially wasted.
However, these salts were also like road signs, equivalent to pointing the way for Lynn:
The culprit came from the basement.
Lynn slowly went down the stairs into the basement.
The basement wasn't large and was filled with many杂物.
Lynn checked it again, but still didn't find any problems.
But he noticed that there were several cracks on one of the basement walls.
Air was actually leaking from the cracks.
In other words, the area behind the basement wall was actually empty.
"Aard."
The invisible wave of force smashed open the wall.
Bricks and stones flew out, revealing the space behind.
Lynn stepped into the gap opened by the Aard sign.
Then he discovered that this underground area was actually a man-made space.
He continued to explore deeper along the passage.
It didn't take long to reach a cave.
When the scene inside the cave came into Lynn's view, he finally understood what was going on with this haunted house.
A tall, humanoid construct made of stone and wood was trapped in a blue cage woven from magic.
When it saw Lynn, it let out an angry roar and raised its fist, as thick as a normal person's waist, and slammed it hard against the magical barrier.
The entire cave shook from the impact, and the magical barrier flickered violently several times, as if it was about to run out of energy.
Fortunately, it held out in the end.
But anyone with eyes could see that this magical barrier wouldn't last long.
Sooner or later, whether today or tomorrow, it would be broken.
"Damn it, isn't that a golem?"
Golems were not monsters brought by the Conjunction of the Spheres.
Instead, they were creations.
Regardless of any stories you might have heard before, the first golem was not created by a powerful sorcerer or an elven sage, but by a simple dwarven bricklayer from the city of Maribor named Bonaventura Sesto.
This story took place many years ago, when the persecution of non-human races in Maribor reached its peak.
Elves and dwarves were accused of bringing plague into the city—though it was later discovered that the culprit was a man named Matteo, who worked as a handyman in a city inn called the Golden Goose.
It was said that Matteo was responsible for serving meals and cleaning toilets, but he only washed his hands once a month, and not very thoroughly at that.
But before the truth was investigated, the persecution of non-human races escalated from looting shops, arson, and occasional beatings to increasingly violent acts, gradually turning into a brutal massacre.
The city guards, however, didn't care, and as a result, the mob murdered over three hundred dwarves and elves within three days and three nights, including Bonaventura Sesto's entire family.
Unable to contain his anger and filled with a desire for revenge, Bonaventura made a clay人形雕像 more than three meters tall.
And he carved the names of the killed non-humans on it, adding some dwarven curses.
After completing it, he slit his own throat. His blood sprayed onto the giant statue, and the statue came to life and began to walk through the city.
Bonaventura finally took revenge on those who persecuted him. The statue he created killed nearly five hundred humans, including the mayor and all members of the city council, before the city guards finally destroyed it with a trebuchet.
The subsequent senate investigation found that Bonaventura actually possessed hidden magical talent.
Although he had never received any training, his strong emotions at the time of his death triggered the dormant magical power within him and created a new spell.
It was this spell that gave the golem life.
Although Bonaventura died, the spell he used to give the golem life aroused the interest of the Sorcerers' Brotherhood.
After paying some price, the Sorcerers' Brotherhood successfully recreated the spell.
And after several modifications and improvements, casting this spell no longer required sacrificing one's life.
Since then, golems gradually became common and popular among sorcerers.
Looking at the golem trapped in the magical barrier, Lynn began to recall the knowledge about golems in the Kaer Morhen castle library:
Since they were constructs created by magic, their entire bodies were made of hard stone and wood, with no weak points.
Secondly, a golem's fist was as powerful as a battering ram, capable of turning a plate-armored knight into mincemeat with just one blow.
Finally, golems didn't bleed, couldn't be poisoned, and wouldn't even feel pain when exposed to fire.
Of course, although golems had no conventional weaknesses, they could still be defeated.
For example, the method used by the Maribor city guards back then: using a trebuchet or ballista to directly destroy it.
In addition, since golems were constructs driven by magic and spells, the dimeritium bombs effective against sorcerers were also effective against golems.
