WWG# Chapter 66: What Exactly Did You Protect?
"Kill him! Kill this mutant!"
Whoosh whoosh whoosh—
Along with Vrasleg's hysterical shouts, several crossbow bolts shot through the air, hitting the upright table squarely.
"Go around him! Shoot him from the side!"
Hidden behind the table, Lynn heard Vrasleg's furious voice and kicked the table.
Sending it flying.
Bang!
The three bandits holding crossbows directly in front of Lynn were still reloading their bolts.
Caught off guard, they were knocked over by the flying tabletop.
That wasn't the end of it.
Crouch, grip sword, lunge forward, draw sword.
A series of movements completed in one fluid motion.
The wooden floor creaked as Lynn pushed off, and he lunged forward like a charging ice wolf, slamming into the bandits who had just tried to flank him from the left.
The change happened too quickly.
Just a second ago, this witcher was clearly hiding behind the table.
Now, he had turned the tables.
One of the two bandits confronted by Lynn fumbled to draw the longsword at his waist.
The other frantically aimed his crossbow at Lynn.
Whoosh—
Clang!
The bandit who instinctively pulled the trigger watched in disbelief as the bolt shot towards Lynn's head.
Before joy could even register on his face,
he saw Lynn simply flick his sword.
Deflecting the crossbow bolt.
"Def... deflected it? How is that possible! Is he even human?"
As this thought formed in the bandit's mind, Lynn had already reached him.
The next second.
Lynn moved past the two bandits.
Instantly, blood spurted from their necks.
Whoosh whoosh whoosh—
Four more crossbow bolts flew towards him.
Lynn ducked behind the bandit whose neck was bleeding, using him as a shield.
The crossbow bolts thudded into the corpse.
Lynn pushed the body away and formed a sign with his left hand.
"Igni."
Flames erupted from his palm.
The surging flames instantly engulfed the four bandits who had just shot arrows at him.
The four bandits immediately screamed, dropped their weapons, and desperately patted and rolled on the ground, trying to extinguish the flames on their bodies.
Their miserable appearance terrified the remaining bandits.
Vrasleg's legs trembled uncontrollably.
"You... you damned mutant, you killed them."
Lynn flicked his sword, shaking off the bloodstains. "Looks like your eyes work pretty well."
Vrasleg took a few steps back. "You people claim to protect us from monsters! Look at what you just did! What exactly did you protect?"
Lynn shook his head.
"You're right, but we witchers also have a saying."
Vrasleg was taken aback. "What is it?"
The witcher's voice and the incoming fist were the last things he felt:
"Steel for humans, silver for monsters."
...
The fight ended quickly.
Apart from Vrasleg, the bandit who clearly seemed to be the leader.
The remaining bandits all died by Lynn's sword.
The blood flowing from the corpses almost soaked the entire second floor.
And a lot of it flowed down through the cracks in the floor.
Vrasleg still wanted to say something, but Lynn punched him unconscious.
He didn't have time to talk to Vrasleg right now.
He had to first ensure the safety of the hostages.
The three hostages were terrified by the scene of Lynn's brutal slaughter.
When Lynn looked at them.
They all instinctively shrank back.
Lauxer, who had been badly beaten earlier, stood protectively in front of his wife and daughter like a man.
Lynn didn't blame them.
Even if there was no mirror here, he knew his current appearance must be terrifying.
It was understandable that honest, ordinary people would be frightened by his appearance.
He shook off the blood that had stained his Gwyhyr sword, and then said to them in a gentle tone.
"You must be Milva's parents. I am a witcher hired by Professor Gloger of Oxenfurt Academy to rescue you."
Milva's eyes lit up. "Professor Gloger? Are you really the reinforcements he sent?"
Lynn smiled slightly. "Of course, would I lie about something like this?"
Then, Lynn described Professor Gloger's appearance.
Finally putting the three hostages at ease.
Only then did Lauxer begin to care about his savior: "Sir, you're covered in blood. Are you injured?"
"No, it's all theirs. It's nothing. Come on, let me untie you first."
As he spoke, Lynn took out his hunting knife and cut the ropes for the hostages.
"You go downstairs first. After I interrogate this guy, I'll escort you back to Novigrad."
After Lauxer and his wife and daughter went downstairs, Lynn woke up Vrasleg, whom he had just knocked unconscious.
He began to interrogate him.
He needed to know if all the members of the Greenwood Brotherhood were here and if any had been missed.
Since he had taken on this task, he should see it through properly.
Ensuring that no loose ends were left.
To prevent any remaining members of the Greenwood Brotherhood from causing trouble for Milva and her family in the future.
But Vrasleg didn't answer.
He was very tough.
He thought that as long as he played the tough guy, Lynn wouldn't be able to do anything to him.
Unfortunately, he was wrong.
The Greater Memory Restoration spell was most effective against this kind of fake tough guy.
However, Lynn didn't want to dirty his hands.
So he used another method.
In front of the master-level Axii sign, Vrasleg immediately spilled everything like beans from a bamboo tube.
Lynn's worries didn't come true.
Everyone in this lumberyard was a member of the Greenwood Brotherhood.
After getting the information he wanted, Lynn didn't torture Vrasleg any further.
After all, he wasn't a demon.
Therefore, he simply made Vrasleg stab himself with his own sword.
...
The Lauxer family waited downstairs anxiously.
Lauxer tried his best to comfort his wife and daughter.
He didn't know how long had passed.
Finally, Lynn came down from upstairs.
But when they clearly saw what Lynn was dragging in his hands, Lauxer's wife and daughter couldn't help but let out exclamations of horror.
Even Lauxer's own expression turned unpleasant.
Because Lynn was dragging a corpse in each of his hands, slowly descending the stairs.
The sound of the corpses scraping against the wooden stairs and the blood flowing from them left two red and sticky trails on the stairs.
Seeing this scene, Lauxer, who had been all smiles before, suddenly had his smile freeze on his face.
He couldn't help but stammer, "Witch... Witcher Master, what are you doing?"
"As you can see, sir, cleaning up the bodies," Lynn gave a friendly smile. "Your daughter is a top student at Oxenfurt Academy, she wouldn't not know that corpses can attract ghouls, would she?"
"If you don't want your lumberyard to become a nest of ghouls, you'd better pile these corpses together and burn them, and then clean up the bloodstains."
