Chapter 41 - shattered circle

The morning sun filtered through the blinds, casting fragmented patterns across Matthew's bedroom. He lay awake, staring at the ceiling, the events of the previous night replaying in his mind. Vinny's unexpected vulnerability had shaken him, revealing a side of his former friend he hadn't seen in years.

Matthew's phone buzzed, pulling him from his thoughts. A message from an unknown number lit up the screen: "Meet me at the old pier. Noon. Come alone."

Curiosity piqued, Matthew replied, "Who is this?"

No response.

He considered ignoring it, but something about the message felt urgent. He decided to go, but not without precautions.

At the pier, the salty breeze carried the scent of the sea. Matthew scanned the area, spotting a figure leaning against a rusted lamppost. As he approached, the figure turned—a young man with sharp features and piercing blue eyes.

"Matthew, I presume?" the stranger said.

"And you are?"

"Name's Elias. I knew your brother."

Matthew's heart skipped a beat. "What do you know about him?"

Elias hesitated, then handed Matthew a worn photograph. It showed Elias and Matthew's brother, laughing together.

"We were close. He told me about you, about Vinny. He wanted to protect you."

Matthew clenched the photo. "Why are you telling me this now?"

"Because the people who hurt him are after you and Vinny. They're watching."

Matthew's mind raced. "Who are they?"

"A group called The Syndicate. They manipulate from the shadows, and they don't like loose ends."

Matthew nodded slowly. "What do they want?"

"Control. And they'll do anything to get it."

Back at school, Vinny sat in the library, flipping through a book without reading. His thoughts were elsewhere, haunted by memories and the weight of his secrets.

A voice interrupted his reverie. "Mind if I join you?"

He looked up to see a girl with vibrant red hair and a mischievous smile.

"Sure," he said, gesturing to the seat across from him.

"I'm Lila," she introduced herself. "New here."

"Vinny."

They chatted, and Vinny found himself drawn to her energy. But he couldn't shake the feeling that she was hiding something.

Later that day, Matthew confronted Vinny.

"Do you know anything about The Syndicate?" he asked.

Vinny's eyes widened. "Where did you hear that name?"

"A guy named Elias. He says they're after us."

Vinny looked away. "They're dangerous. My family has ties to them."

Matthew stepped closer. "We need to know what we're up against."

Vinny nodded. "Then we need to find my father. He has the answers."

As they planned their next move, a shadow watched from afar, a phone pressed to their ear.

"They're taking the bait," the voice said. "Proceed as planned."

The storm outside mirrored the one brewing in Vinny's chest.

Lightning streaked across the sky as he stood at the edge of the mansion's second-floor balcony, drenched in tension more than rain. Matthew hadn't said a word since returning from the night stakeout with Kieran. He just stood inside, at the threshold of the balcony door, eyes burning a hole into the back of Vinny's neck.

"Say it," Vinny finally muttered without turning. "I can feel you screaming in your head."

Matthew's voice was cold. "Elias and Lila. You knew."

Vinny turned, face unreadable. "Suspected. Not knew."

Matthew stepped forward, fists clenched at his sides. "You didn't tell me."

"And you didn't tell me about the meeting with Tom until I tasted the blood on your lips."

The air cracked with another flash of lightning, closer this time.

For a moment, it felt like they were back at square one—two guarded hearts in a room full of silence and shadows.

But then Vinny stepped closer, jaw tight. "You don't get to be the only one playing protector, Matthew."

"And you don't get to keep secrets when lives are at stake."

They stared at each other, the distance closing like magnets snapped back into place. And then the silence fractured.

"We'll deal with them," Vinny said. "Both of them. But we need to be careful. Lila is smarter than she lets on. And Elias—"

"Is the reason Tom had inside info," Matthew growled.

Vinny nodded grimly. "He's been feeding Tom our every move."

Matthew's hands curled at his sides. "They were part of the core."

"Exactly," Vinny whispered. "That's why it hurts."

A sudden noise echoed from downstairs—wood splitting, maybe a chair falling.

Both of them turned instantly, instinct kicking in.

Matthew was the first to move, his long legs covering the hall in seconds, his hand on the concealed knife strapped beneath his sleeve. Vinny was just behind, armed and wired.

They descended the staircase into a dimly lit foyer. At the center of the room stood Kieran, his expression shaken, knuckles bruised, and blood trickling down his temple.

"I was ambushed," Kieran breathed, stumbling toward them. "By Elias. He's gone. Took one of the safe keys."

Vinny rushed to steady him, but Matthew's voice was already cutting like a whip: "Where was Lila?"

"She's gone too," Kieran spat, teeth clenched. "She played me. Led me into the wine cellar, then Elias attacked."

Vinny's pulse thundered. "We underestimated them."

"No," Matthew said. "We trusted them."

A bitter pause fell before Matthew turned on his heel and marched toward the old study, Vinny and Kieran trailing behind. Maps, notes, surveillance photos—all were laid out across a massive oak table.

"They've had access to everything," Matthew muttered, sweeping the documents off the table with a crash. "Our plans, our fallback routes…"

"Our weaknesses," Vinny finished grimly.

Matthew's phone buzzed. A message flashed.

Unknown Number: "Tell me, how does betrayal taste, Matthew? This is only the beginning."

Attached was a blurry photo—Elias in a dark hallway, standing over something—or someone—unconscious.

Matthew handed the phone to Vinny.

"We need to go dark," Vinny said immediately. "No phones, no signals. We regroup, harden the inner circle, and prepare."

"Prepare for what?" Kieran asked, wiping blood from his cheek.

Matthew looked up. His eyes were steel.

"War."

Back in their room, the storm had calmed, but tension hadn't.

Vinny sat on the edge of the bed, shirt half unbuttoned, eyes locked on Matthew as he paced. The pull between them hadn't faded—it had sharpened.

"You're doing it again," Vinny said.

"What?"

"Shutting me out."

Matthew paused. "You're the one who keeps making decisions without telling me."

Vinny smirked faintly. "And you love it."

Matthew turned, jaw flexing. "Don't flatter yourself."

Vinny stood slowly, walking over with deliberate calm. "You like the chaos I bring. Admit it."

Matthew didn't move, but his eyes darkened. "You drive me insane."

Vinny tilted his head. "Good. Because I'm not going anywhere. And you—"

He leaned closer, lips brushing Matthew's ear.

"—are mine."

That single word cracked something open. Matthew grabbed him, kissing him hard, desperation and fury woven into every movement. They stumbled back onto the bed, tangled in heat and instinct.

Later—much later—they lay in silence, breaths slowing.

Matthew's fingers traced lazy patterns on Vinny's shoulder.

"I like it when you say it," he murmured.

"What?"

"That I'm yours."

Vinny's lips twitched into a rare, genuine smile. "Then I'll say it again. And again."

Matthew closed his eyes, for once allowing himself to feel safe. Just for a moment.

But the war was far from over.
