Chapter 18 - Compulsory Apology

Another exhausting day at work, but I'm finally home, sprawled across my bed, dreaming of how to spend my unexpected fortune.

Madam Jessy didn't just pay me well, she practically threw a fortune my way. Enough to make me question reality.

When I called her this morning, just to be sure it wasn't a mistake, she simply laughed.

"It's nothing, my dear. Feel free to drop by anytime to see me."

Her generosity still shocks me. But I'm not complaining. This is it.

I finally have the funds to pursue my dream.

Law school.

I can already picture myself registering, sitting in class, preparing cases, arguing in court. It's happening.

My plans for Ray's education are crystal clear; I want to give him the very best, ensuring he lacks nothing in life.

I've already started researching top schools, looking for institutions that will challenge and nurture his bright young mind. He deserves the finest education, one that will open doors for him and shape his future into something remarkable.

Private tutors, extracurricular activities, and exposure to the best opportunities. I want him to have it all. No dream should be too big for him, no goal out of reach.

More than just academics, I want Ray to grow into a confident, well-rounded individual, equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate the world without limits.

His future is my priority, and I will stop at nothing to ensure he is set up for success.

This evening, I step onto the balcony, the cool breeze brushing against my skin as I dial my parents. The moment my mother picks up, her voice is filled with warmth and concern.

"Celeste, my dear! How are you? Is everything okay?"

I smile, leaning against the railing. "Mama, Papa, I have good news."

My father's deep voice joins the conversation. "Tell us, my child."

I take a deep breath, excitement bubbling within me. "I finally got paid for the job I did for Madam Jessy. It was a generous sum, more than I expected. With this, I can begin clearing the debt that chained me to this palace."

Silence lingers for a second before my mother exhales in relief. "Oh, Celeste! This is wonderful news! The day we prayed for is finally within reach."

My father's voice is steady, filled with pride. "You have worked hard, my daughter. Soon, you will be free to carve a new path for yourself."

I nod, even though they can't see me. "Yes, Papa. No more being at the mercy of the wicked Queen. No more feeling trapped. Once this debt is settled, I will be free to leave this palace and decide my own fate."

My mother sniffles, likely wiping away tears. "We just want you safe and happy, Celeste. Whatever you choose, we stand by you."

Hearing their unwavering support strengthens my resolve. The finish line is near, and soon, I will no longer be bound to this place. A new chapter awaits.

In my room, I'm lost in my thoughts when Esther walks in, balancing a tray of food.

She places it down, then pauses. "Have you heard?"

I barely glance at her. "Heard what?"

"The Queen's birthday is tomorrow."

I blink. "And?"

Esther grins. "And it's one of the biggest event of the year, if not the biggest. The palace is buzzing. Everyone will be there."

I sit up, taking my food. "Good for her."

Esther scoffs. "Good for everyone. Except you, apparently."

I shrug. "I have better things to think about."

She rolls her eyes. "You're the prince's wife. People will expect you to be there."

I take a bite and chew slowly. "Well, people will be disappointed."

Esther stares at me, half amused, half exasperated. "You really don't care, do you?"

I smile, swallowing my food. "Nope."

Because right now, I'm too busy waiting in line for my law registration.

I'm almost done with my dinner when my phone beeps.

I glance at the screen. Cassian?

I frown. Since when did he start texting me?

I open the message:

Celeste, the council members are in the Grand Hall. This is the right time to apologize to them.

I exhale sharply. Of course. That whole "disrespecting the council" nonsense.

For a second, I consider ignoring him.

But I'm in a good mood tonight. So why not?

I toss my phone aside, pick out a nice dress, add simple jewelry, and apply light makeup. Nothing too extravagant - just enough to remind them who they're dealing with.

As I step inside, I'm briefly stunned, Cassian is sitting with them.

Interesting.

I greet them politely. My eyes meet Cassian's, and he holds my gaze, expression unreadable.

I take a steady breath. "My Lords, I'm sorry about the other day. I shouldn't have spoken without thinking. Please, find it in your hearts to forgive me."

I say it like I mean it.

Because, honestly? I do.

For a moment, the room is silent.

I can't tell if they're surprised, suspicious, or just impressed.

Then Lord Edric smiles.

"You are forgiven, my princess. You may go."

Just like that.

I nod, but before I turn, I catch Cassian's eyes again.

And just because I can, I wink at him.

Then I leave, suppressing a grin.

Back in my room, I slip off my dress, toss my jewelry on the dresser, and change into something comfortable.

I sink into my bed, letting exhaustion take over.

Tonight went surprisingly well.

Just as I'm drifting into half-consciousness, my phone buzzes again.

I groan, reaching for it lazily.

Cassian.

I blink at the screen.

"You did well."

For some reason, I smile.

It's small. Almost unintentional. But it's there.

I shake my head. Not tonight, Cassian.

I toss the phone aside and immediately dial my mother.

Her warm voice fills my ears, and soon, I'm laughing, talking to her, my father, and Jay.

It feels good. Normal. A reminder of who I am outside of all this royal madness.

By the time I hang up, my heart is light.

I crawl under my sheets, sighing deeply.

Sleep takes me, and for the first time in a long while, I dream of peace.

But just as sleep pulls me under, a sound- faint but unmistakable, echoes through the room.

A soft creak.

Like a door easing open.
