Chapter 28 - Chapter 25: Work day

The first rays of sunlight, diffused and hazy, painted the windowpane of the small apartment a pale gold. Seungmin stirred under his duvet, the rhythmic whir of the refrigerator a familiar lullaby. A low groan escaped his lips as he stretched, his muscles protesting the early hour. He knew Jihoon was already up. Jihoon was always up before him, the silent hum of his laptop a constant presence from the living room.

Rolling out of bed, Seungmin padded towards the kitchen, the cool floor a welcome shock against his bare feet. He found Jihoon, as expected, hunched over his laptop at the small dining table, a half-empty mug of coffee beside him. The screen glowed with lines of code, a language Seungmin only partially understood but recognized as Jihoon's world.

"Morning," Seungmin mumbled, his voice thick with sleep.

Jihoon looked up, a small, tired smile gracing his lips. "Morning, sleepyhead. Coffee's ready."

Seungmin poured himself a mug, the rich aroma instantly invigorating. He leaned against the counter, watching Jihoon for a moment. Even in the soft morning light, the dark circles under Jihoon's eyes were prominent. The launch of their small app development company was demanding, and Jihoon, the lead developer, bore the brunt of the technical workload.

"Long night?" Seungmin asked, taking a slow sip of his coffee.

Jihoon sighed, running a hand through his already dishevelled hair. "Yeah. I'm trying to iron out that last bug in the payment system. It's… stubborn."

Seungmin nodded understandingly. His own role as the business and marketing half of their partnership was equally demanding, but it rarely involved staring at a screen for hours on end, wrestling with lines of code. He handled the clients, the finances, the constant hustle of getting their name out there.

"Anything I can help with?" Seungmin offered, knowing the answer was likely no.

Jihoon shook his head. "Not on this, unfortunately. It's a bit of a beast. But," he paused, his gaze meeting Seungmin's, "could you… maybe make sure we have enough snacks for the day? My brain feels like it's running on fumes."

Seungmin chuckled. "Consider it done. My brain, on the other hand, is ready for some non-coding related tasks."

They fell into a comfortable silence, the clinking of spoons against mugs and the quiet tapping of Jihoon's keyboard filling the space. This was their rhythm. Jihoon, the focused, intense developer, and Seungmin, the more outwardly-oriented business person, working side-by-side, their individual strengths complementing each other.

After breakfast, a quick affair of toast and more coffee, they transitioned into full work mode. The living room transformed into their makeshift office. Jihoon remained at the dining table, the hub of technical activity, while Seungmin set up camp on the sofa, his laptop open to a spreadsheet.

The morning was a blur of emails, phone calls, and the constant hum of productivity. Seungmin negotiated with a potential client, drafted a marketing proposal, and chased down an outstanding invoice. He could hear Jihoon on the phone in the background, discussing technical specifications with their server provider, his voice calm but firm.

Around lunchtime, Seungmin stretched, his back stiff from sitting. He glanced over at Jihoon, who was still engrossed in his work, a furrow in his brow.

"Lunch break?" Seungmin suggested, his stomach rumbling.

Jihoon blinked as if just realizing time had passed. "Oh. Yeah. Good idea."

Seungmin went to the kitchen and quickly assembled some sandwiches. He brought them over to the dining table, placing one in front of Jihoon.

"Thanks," Jihoon said, taking a bite without taking his eyes off the screen.

Seungmin sighed inwardly. He knew Jihoon got lost in his work, but sometimes, he wished for a brief moment of shared relaxation. He sat down opposite Jihoon, eating his sandwich slowly, trying to engage him in conversation.

"Got a positive response from the client in Busan," Seungmin said, wiping his mouth.

Jihoon nodded, still typing. "That's good."

"They're interested in the custom analytics package," Seungmin continued, trying to gauge Jihoon's reaction.

"Okay. We'll need to factor in the development time for that," Jihoon replied, his voice still focused on the code.

Seungmin felt a familiar pang of frustration, quickly followed by understanding. This was just how Jihoon was. His passion for development was all-consuming, and while it sometimes meant sacrificing small moments, it was also what made their company possible.

"Right," Seungmin said, finishing his sandwich. He decided not to push it. He knew that once Jihoon was in the zone, it was best to let him be.

The afternoon continued in a similar vein. Seungmin tackled more business tasks, while the rhythmic clicking of Jihoon's keyboard remained a constant backdrop. There were moments of collaboration, quick exchanges about features, timelines, and client needs. In these moments, their individual worlds intersected, their shared vision for the company the bridge between them.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the room, a weary silence fell. Seungmin closed his laptop, feeling the exhaustion of the day settle in his bones. He looked over at Jihoon, who was still staring at his screen, though his typing had slowed.

"Almost done?" Seungmin asked softly.

Jihoon let out a long breath, leaning back in his chair. "I think… I think I finally got it." A small, triumphant smile spread across his face. "The bug. It's fixed."

Seungmin felt a surge of relief and pride. "That's great, Jihoon! Seriously, that was stressing me out."

Jihoon stretched, his joints cracking. "Yeah. Me too." He finally turned his full attention to Seungmin, his eyes softer now that the intensity of the coding was gone. "Thanks for holding down the fort today. I know I was a bit… consumed."

Seungmin smiled. "It's what we do. We both have our roles." He paused, then added, "And you did amazing work. I could hear you wrestling with it all day."

Jihoon's smile widened slightly. "You can always hear me wrestling with it."

There was a comfortable silence between them, then a shared understanding of the effort and dedication they both poured into their work. The apartment, which had been buzzing with activity all day, felt calm and quiet.

"So," Seungmin said, getting up from the sofa, "now that the bug is vanquished, how about we order some takeout? My brain is definitely ready for something that doesn't involve spreadsheets or code."

Jihoon's eyes lit up. "Yes. Please. My brain is craving… something that isn't lines of text."

As Seungmin picked up his phone to order, he glanced back at Jihoon, who was still sitting at the table, a tired but content look on his face. It had been a long, demanding work day. But sitting there, in their shared space, the scent of impending takeout filling the air, Seungmin felt a deep sense of satisfaction. They were building something together, brick by painstaking brick, and in those moments of shared exhaustion and quiet triumph, their partnership felt stronger than ever. The work day was over, but the foundation they were laying, together, was solid.
