CASEY
I smiled as I pushed him away slowly with my hand. I knew if he wanted to, he wouldn't have budged. But I could push him away because he was letting me. That was the difference, power given, not taken.
"Not so easy," I said, the corners of my lips curling. "You can't just tell me what to do."
"I'm not telling. I'm asking," he replied, his voice low and deliberate. "What more do you want me to do?" He asked on his way to being desperate.
"I don't know. You're smart, so think smart."
I winked. A slow, teasing wink that said I was still in control, even if only barely. Then I turned, opened the door with a slight smile on my face, and closed it gently behind me.
The hallway felt colder, quieter, like I had just stepped out of a different world. As I walked toward my desk, I caught sight of Jennifer. She had stopped working and was now fully watching me.
