Cherreads

Chapter 197 - Failure and Realisation.

The room stank of ash, blood, and failure.

Noah lay face down on the cold, cracked floor of the underground training chamber. His body was a patchwork of burns, bruises, and bandages. The Azure Flame danced quietly above him—mocking him.

How long had it been? Days? Weeks?

There was no sun here. No clocks. Just fire.

He sat up with trembling arms. The moment he did, the flame surged toward him again, sensing his weakness.

FWOOSH!

It dove into his chest. He screamed as it tore through his body like a rampaging beast—ripping through his nerves, flooding his blood.

Every inch of him burned.

"HAAAHH—ARGHHHH!!"

He fell to his knees, fists clenched. His breath was ragged. Heartbeat chaotic.

"Why... can't I... control you…?"

The flame gave no answer.

Only pain.

Noah slammed his hand on the floor. Again. Again. His blood mixed with soot.

"You're mine! I'm your wielder! Why do you fight me!?"

Images flooded his mind.

Him standing before the Shadow Prince, coughing blood.

Layla crying in the aftermath.

Scarlett and Lyra, hurt—because he wasn't enough.

The dragon's voice: "Power without control is just as dangerous as none at all."

The people he couldn't save.

The enemies who wouldn't stop coming.

And then—

The silence.

He was alone in this chamber.

In this body.

In this fight.

"Maybe… maybe I'm not strong enough…"

His thoughts spiraled.

"What if I can never control it?"

"What if I'm just pretending to be chosen?"

"What if… I die the next time? What if they die?"

His breath quickened.

"Why did you choose me? What do you want from me!?"

He screamed at the flame.

It pulsed once—and surged again into his core, burning hotter than ever before. Not just his body this time. His soul.

His vision blurred. Everything turned white-blue. He collapsed.

And then—

A whisper.

Not from the flame. Not from his memory.

But from deep within him.

"You fight the fire like it's your enemy..."

Noah opened his eyes. A vast void stretched before him—his inner world. And at the center, the Azure Flame floated, wild and proud.

"But what if it's a part of you?"

He stared. Realization beginning to dawn.

"I kept trying to tame it... to cage it..."

The flame flared as if responding to his thoughts.

"...But it was never meant to be controlled."

"It was meant to be understood."

Noah stepped forward. The flame didn't attack. Just watched.

"We are the same, aren't we? You burn everything that threatens you... and I want to burn everything that threatens what I love."

His eyes shimmered—gold and blue mixing.

"I don't want to fight you anymore…"

He extended his hand.

"I want to be you."

The flame rushed forward.

Not with anger.

But with acceptance.

It collided with his chest—and this time, it didn't tear him apart. It flowed into him—filling his veins, wrapping around his bones, fusing with his core.

His forehead burned with a mark—a ring of glowing azure light.

Then another. And another.

Five halos appeared behind his back, blazing like celestial wheels of fire.

One of them pulsed—and clicked.

Unlocked.

His Divine Eyes snapped open, golden with flecks of brilliant azure. The flames didn't resist—they bowed.

A hum filled the chamber.

Just as the first halo unlocked and shimmered behind him, a searing pulse of azure energy shot through Noah's skull—

And the world vanished.

He stood in a sea of obsidian flame.

There was no ground, no sky—only endless darkness lit by floating embers of glowing blue.

The flame that once danced in his palm now towered around him like a cathedral of flickering light. Ancient. Primeval. Breathing.

A voice rang out—not loud, but inevitable.

"You have awakened what few dared to touch—what even dragons once feared."

The flames rippled, forming shifting shapes—silhouettes of men and beasts, gods and monsters, all kneeling before the blaze. Then, swallowed.

"Eternal Devour… is not just a power. It is a truth."

Noah took a step forward. His body felt weightless. His mind, drowning in sensation.

"It does not burn. It devours."

"Not to destroy... but to consume and become."

A colossal eye opened in the sky above. Azure blue. Slitted like a serpent's. It stared into Noah's soul.

"Everything is fuel. Fire. Curse. Light. Death. Emotion. If you accept it."

"But power comes with price. Every flame you devour becomes a part of you."

He saw glimpses—visions like shattered mirrors:

Him walking through a battlefield, devouring flames and curses as warriors fell around him.

Him facing a beast of darkness, swallowing its black flame into his chest.

Him laughing in the face of fire, as it obeyed.

Him standing alone—victorious… but altered.

"To master Eternal Devour… you must never flinch from pain."

"You must accept everything. Even hatred. Even sorrow. Even death."

The flames surged, racing toward him. He didn't run.

He opened his arms.

And they crashed into him.

WHOOSH!

Blue flame poured into his body—through his skin, eyes, mouth, soul. Every muscle burned. Every thought screamed. But he didn't resist.

He welcomed it.

Pain became clarity.

Agony became understanding.

He stood taller. Brighter. Colder.

And then—

The vision faded.

The world returned.

Noah stood in the chamber once again—but now, the air shifted around him. As if space itself respected him.

A soft ding echoed.

[Ding! You have awakened a unique evolution: Azure Divine Eyes]

– Passive unlocked: Soulflame Bond – Your soul is protected by Azure flame.

[Ding! You have obtained the Concept Fragment: Eternal Devour]

—Passive: Every flame devoured strengthens your soul's core.

Noah stood tall.

The flame curled around his body like a cloak.

He extended his hand.

The air shimmered.

His aura… transcended.

He wasn't the wielder of the Azure Flame anymore.

He was The Azure Flame.

A smirk touched his lips.

The flame curled gently around his arm, no longer wild—only waiting.

Noah closed his hand.

"I won't just burn..."

His eyes glowed, flecks of gold swallowed by blue.

"I'll devour everything that stand for."

"And when I do…"

His eyes blazed.

"No one will dare to harm the ones I care."
