The intensity of the war still exceeded Shen He's expectations.
She had long known about Academy City's deep reserves of automated weaponry—cloned drones, AIM-jammed spider tanks, anti-Esper turrets—but the style of combat unfolding now was different. This wasn't just defense. It was a full-scale purge protocol. One that could only end in fire.
"What the hell is Aleister planning to gain from a battlefield like this?" Shen He muttered, her spear sweeping through three incoming machines.
"We've got to get the students out, especially the Misaka sisters. If they're forced to fight as data weapons again, they'll all be consumed in this madness," she said firmly, eyes burning.
"So we're really going to save that kid now?" Accelerator—One Side—glared at the restrained clone on the cross-shaped machine nearby. "If it weren't for that bastard science freak, the 'Last Order' wouldn't even need to be here."
"Either way, we'd still end up crossing paths with a Saint or an Archangel-class clone eventually," Shen He shot back, not taking her eyes off Rear Water, the clone still struggling with his programming.
She tilted her head. "What about you? Still want revenge on whoever controls you? Nod, and I'll override your neuro-lock. You'll fight under your own will."
"…Even though I just tried to kill you?" Rear Water's voice was low, guarded.
"You didn't succeed," Shen He replied bluntly. "And you don't yet have the skill or instinct to defeat me. But more importantly, we share a mission—to stabilize chaos. I don't need your approval. Just your decision."
Rear Water fell silent, a crack of emotion breaking the cloned rigidity on his face.
"…Give me a coin," he said at last.
"What?"
"I was a mercenary before this. A soldier with a contract. If I'm to fight for you—till the end—I want the coin to prove it."
Shen He understood the ritual. With a subtle motion, she flicked a silver token from Chaldea's vault to his hand.
The decision was sealed.
As Shen He prepared to lead the exfiltration of the Misaka sisters, Shirai Kuroko—who had just finished scanning incoming signals about the war—stood frozen with dread.
"It's over. Onee-sama will definitely send the Misakas into combat…" she whispered, trembling. The thought of thousands of her 'older sisters' dying on a battlefield made her physically nauseous.
"We… maybe we can talk to Mikoto?" Uiharu Kazari said weakly from her screen, the signal crackling.
"No. She's already crossed a line," Kuroko stood up, her eyes firm. "Kazari, I need you to help me hack the urban map grid. We need an evacuation path for at least 10,000 bodies. If there's any place to hide them—even underground—I need it."
"You're serious about this…"
Kazari's voice hesitated. Wouldn't this betray Mikoto?
"You're my partner, right?" Kuroko said, grabbing her by the shoulders through the teleport proxy screen. "So help me like always. Feed me data from the external network once you're in range. Get the Misakas out with me!"
This team of once-minor Disciplinary Committee officers had now stepped into a war far greater than the delinquents they once handled.
But before Kuroko could act, the door opened—and Misaka Mikoto Alter strode in, electric tension bleeding from her steps.
"Onee-sama—" Kuroko almost reverted to her usual idolized tone.
"You came at the right time." Mikoto Alter's voice was clipped, electric energy still surging faintly across her body. "Find Last Order. Send an all-network command. All Misaka units are to arm themselves and assemble here. This city has betrayed them too many times. If Aleister wants war, we'll give him one."
She intended to build her army from the very clones they once discarded.
With the Final Order active, the entire Misaka Network could pool computational power and Esper ability—effectively turning the army into a shared AI-enhanced organism.
"…Understood." Kuroko forced a smile, glancing toward the monitor. "Onee-sama, I also picked up some interesting network activity. A Council director is on the border battlefield. One who apparently backed the Absolute Ability Evolution Project—Thomas Platinum."
As expected, a surge of dark lightning rippled through Mikoto Alter's hair.
"I'm going to kill him." She turned on her heel and left, her killing intent spreading like a magnetic storm.
Kuroko whispered under her breath, "Sorry, sorry, sorry…"
Then, grabbing Uiharu's projected image by the hand, she teleported toward the secure Misaka containment sector.
Inside, Last Order—codenamed #20001—was in a suspended capsule, her connection to Accelerator freshly severed. Mikoto Alter had taken her back by force after retrieving her from Touma, threatening Accelerator with death to secure the Network's loyalty.
Now, she was the command hub for every Misaka sister still active.
"The world war has begun. Your sister wants you to lead the evacuation and wipe every trace of this project off the map," Kuroko told the room full of hesitant researchers and guards. Thanks to her special status as Judgment, no one questioned her command.
Over 1,100 pre-developed Misaka clones, nearing completion, were immediately released. Genetic data, project notes, growth tanks—everything was marked for destruction.
As the final capsule opened and Last Order emerged, her eyes were already calculating—taking in the chaos, preparing commands.
Just then, Shen He and her group, nearing the underground factory site, encountered four Misaka sisters already awaiting them outside.
"You… were you waiting for us?" Shen He asked, cautiously halting her squad.
"Target One Side located. Confirmed. Misaka Unit 13567 responding," said the one in front, speaking with the Network's uniform intonation.
"Order issued by Unit 20001—Final Signal—currently managing the Misaka Network," continued Misaka 18684.
"Directive: Relay the message 'We are escaping. Follow as soon as possible' to One Side," stated Misaka 14879.
"…Misaka… Misaka… apologizes, but she has nothing further to say," finished Misaka 16487.
Everyone stared.
It was a twist, but a welcome one. Final Order had clearly made an independent decision to save the sisters. Perhaps her trust in Accelerator hadn't broken, after all.
"Understood." Shen He nodded, stepping forward. "Jeanne d'Arc, take the students and civilians. We'll meet with the Misaka sisters and carve a path out of this city together."
