I sat on the edge of the unfamiliar bed, my fingers pressed into the mattress like it could somehow explain how I'd gotten here. The linens were soft, the blankets neatly tucked around me as if someone expected I'd need comfort. I didn't.
I needed answers. I needed Lucian. I needed to understand why Kael—of all people—would bring me here. My stomach churned, and the sharp pain in my temples flared again as the memory of the girl's voice came back to me.
"Kael would kill me if I let you starve."
Those words had cracked something in me. I kept replaying them over and over, like picking at a scab I couldn't stop scratching. Kael. He brought me here. He planned this. And no amount of gentle hands or soft words could fix that.
