Chapter 35 - Defector’s Gambit

The Zenith facility's sterile hum was a constant pressure as Alex Mercer slipped into a disused storage bay, the defector network chip from Huei burning in his pocket. The Neon Veil's chaos—Viper's escape, the New Haven relay's location—had sharpened his rebellion against the mindwipe that made him AM-17. Memories of New Haven—Valor's orbs, Fae's smirk, his parents' betrayal—fueled him. Dr. Lin's kill switch was his hope to stop the Control Grid, but Shvery's accusations and Carlton's scrutiny were closing in. Fae's note—They've taken your mind—was his anchor.

Huei waited, her holo-device casting a faint glow across her sharp features. "Defector contact confirmed," she whispered, eyes scanning for patrols. "Shenzhen's edge, old factory—midnight. They know Viper."

Alex's heart raced. Viper was Zenith's key to New Haven—his city, his fight. "Any word on the board?" he asked, memories surging—Veyra's venom, "Zenith's roots run deep."

"Rumors," Huei said, plugging in the chip. "A name—Seris—linked to Viper. Lin mentioned her, too." A holo flickered—encrypted chatter, defectors planning a strike. "They're hitting a Zenith convoy tonight. We join, we get answers."

"Risky," Alex said, a flash hitting—Fae's blade, "Kid, you're in deep!" "Shvery's watching, Carlton's tightening the leash."

"Then we're shadows," Huei replied, her eyes fierce. "The kill switch needs us in New Haven—defectors are our way out."

A noise—boots. They ducked behind crates as Shvery passed, rifle slung, his bandaged shoulder stiff. "I know you're sneaking," he growled, pausing. Alex held his breath, Huei's hand steadying him. Shvery moved on, but his threat lingered.

"Midnight," Alex whispered. "We move."

Back in his quarters, Alex stashed the chip, memories flooding—P.A.I.R.E.'s raids, Maya's staff, Zenith's cold rig erasing him. Seris—Season 1's blade—loomed, tying Viper to the board. The kill switch was New Haven's salvation, and he'd deliver it. Fae's note burned in his soul: Remember who you are.

Morning brought Carlton's briefing, the team in the war room. His gray eyes were ice. "Viper's trail—defector convoy, undercity. Recon only, Mercer, Huei, Shvery. No heroics, or you're done."

Alex nodded, hiding his plan. The convoy was his ticket to defectors, to Seris. Huei's glance sealed their pact. Shvery's glare was a blade, his voice low. "One slip, Mercer, and I'm reporting you."

"Try keeping up," Alex shot back, tension crackling. Carlton's silence was heavy, his trust fraying.

The transport plunged into Shenzhen's undercity, a sprawl of rust and flickering holograms. Alex led, staff collapsed, instincts sharp—New Haven's battles, Marcus's grit. Huei scanned, Shvery trailed, his rifle a constant threat. The convoy's coords loomed—an armored Zenith transport, defectors circling like wolves.

Huei's device picked up their signal—encrypted, urgent. "They're hitting now," she whispered, disabling a perimeter drone. "We blend in."

They slipped into the chaos, defectors striking—bolts flew, tires screeched. Alex stunned a Zenith guard, his staff crackling, memories fueling him—Fae's stealth, "Fight back!" Huei hacked a turret, turning it on the convoy, while Shvery fired, precise despite his wound.

A defector—scarred, grizzled—spotted them. "You Zenith?" he barked, rifle raised.

"Friends," Alex said, hands up, risking truth. "Lin sent us—Viper, Seris, the Grid."

The defector hesitated, then nodded. "Follow. Name's Kwan." He led them to a wrecked truck, defectors looting data-drives. "Viper's meeting Seris—New Haven, three days. Grid's core is there."

Alex's heart lurched. Three days—New Haven's deadline. A flash hit—his parents' screams, Valor's pulse—nearly dropping him. "Kill switch—where?" he demanded.

Kwan tossed him a holo-chip. "Core's specs—guarded, underground. Lin's alive, hiding. Find her."

Shvery's voice cut through, rifle aimed at Kwan. "You're talking too much, Mercer. Carlton didn't clear this."

"Stand down," Alex snapped, staff ready. Huei stepped between, voice cool. "We're getting intel—your job."

Defectors turned, weapons up. Tension spiked—then Zenith drones swarmed, bolts raining. "Ambush!" Kwan yelled, diving. Alex stunned a drone, its wreckage sparking, while Huei hacked another, redirecting its fire. Shvery took a graze, cursing, but kept shooting.

"Exfil!" Carlton barked through comms, his voice a whip. The transport screamed in, ramp down. Alex grabbed the holo-chip, Kwan vanishing into the chaos. They dove aboard, blood and smoke trailing, Shvery clutching his arm, glaring. "You're a traitor, Mercer. Carlton's done."

"Prove it," Alex shot back, the holo-chip heavy. Huei's eyes signaled caution, her hand brushing his—the chip was theirs.

Carlton's voice was steel. "Debrief, now. Mercer, you're out of chances."

The transport sped through Shenzhen's neon maze, the city a blur of light and shadow. Alex's mind raced—Seris, New Haven, three days. Memories flooded—Daniel's pride, Elena's tears, Zenith's betrayal. The kill switch was real, and Lin was alive. He'd find her, stop the Grid.

Back at the facility, Huei met him in a shadowed vent. "Chip's legit," she whispered, decrypting it. "Core's in New Haven—fortified, Viper's there. Seris is board-level."

"Board," Alex growled, Veyra's face flashing—Season 1's architect. "We're leaving—tonight."

"Shvery's reporting," Huei warned. "Carlton's locking you down."

"Then we're faster," Alex said, Fae's note a fire. "Defectors—Kwan's network. They'll get us out."

As the facility's hum swallowed him, Alex gripped the chip, Huei's alliance his lifeline. Seris was the target, New Haven the battleground. He was no pawn—he'd end this, or die trying.
