"I know how close you were to my father while he was alive," Nikolas said, sitting upright. "Can I count on you in times like these?" he asked Mr. Smith, his father's long-time lawyer, who sat across from him.
They had just arrived at Mr. Smith's office, and to his biggest surprise they had found him already waiting.
It was as if he had been expecting their visit, almost like he knew that this moment would come and that he was the first person Nikolas would come running to.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, they had dived straight to the business at hand.
"Yes, I understand what you mean," Mr. Smith replied, running a steady hand through his beard, as though he had something else in his mind he wanted to say but didn't.
Nikolas glanced sideways at Selene. She looked stunning sitting beside him, but he still preferred the version of her beneath all the makeup. His old Selene,the one who didn't need to pretend.
