Chapter 73 - Morning Regret

I didn't sleep.

Not really.

Maybe I dozed off for a few minutes here and there, lulled by the steady rhythm of Oscar's heartbeat, the unnatural warmth of his body pressed against mine, the deep breath of his wolf at peace—for now.

But sleep didn't come easy, not when the night felt like something sacred and stolen. A quiet illusion that I knew would be shattered the moment the moon surrendered to dawn.

And when it did—when the silvery glow faded and the sun began to rise—I felt it.

The shift.

Not the physical kind.

That had happened hours ago.

Oscar had shifted back into his human form not long after the full moon's peak, and yet he'd remained close, wrapping his arms around me, chin resting lightly atop my head as we sat huddled on the old couch tucked behind the tall shelves of the library. Neither of us spoke. Maybe because neither of us knew how.

But as dawn crept in, something in his body changed. Tensed.
