Chapter 97 - Returning to old habits

The movie ended sometime around twilight, the golden-orange light spilling through the curtains and casting soft shadows across the living room.

Christian stood, stretching. "You want anything? Tea? Hot chocolate?"

"Hot chocolate sounds perfect." I smiled cheekily, my voice low and soft.

He moved into the kitchen, humming a tune under his breath, and I watched him go with a strange, bittersweet ache in my chest.

I didn't want him to stay.

But I didn't want him to go either.

My head was still all over the place, and the phone call with Bliss had only made it worse.

She'd accused me of going back to Christian and somehow, even though I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong, being here with him like this made a different kind of guilt settle in my stomach.

Was even this small reprieve I got from his presence wrong? Did I not deserve even this?

Christian returned and handed me my hot chocolate and we drank in silence, watching the sun set behind the trees outside.
