Chapter 61 - Chapter 11: Looking for Someone

Tokyo Area, the minivan Morin was driving cruised smoothly down the highway.

The number of vehicles on the road in the Tokyo Area was moderate—definitely not as sparse as before the war, but still far from bustling. The intensity of traffic control had drastically reduced compared to earlier times. Whether or not Morin had a valid driver's license, the roadside police paid him no mind. Their main concern now was the infiltration of Gastrea Animals into the settlement or any other special incidents that arose. As long as there were no accidents, everything else was overlooked.

Thus, Morin's vehicle encountered no issues as it made its way to the vicinity of a public university-affiliated hospital in the residential area. He found a parking spot before bringing the car to a stop.

"Alright, let me see if there are any precautions first," Morin muttered to himself.

He parked in the lot but didn't immediately search for his target. Instead, he took a moment to observe his surroundings. Satisfied that there was no one around, he rolled up the sleeve of his left arm, revealing a futuristic-looking armlet. He pressed a few buttons on it, and within moments, a three-dimensional virtual light screen materialized before him.

An armlet-type personal terminal.

This wasn't some kind of black-market technology. Morin had used similar electronics before his transmigration, though the production costs were exorbitant. The devices had never entered the consumer market, remaining restricted to laboratories or limited trials.

In the world of Sword Art Online, fully immersive virtual reality gaming had already been launched, and armlet-type personal computers were even more powerful. Morin wasn't one to shy away from making an investment, especially when he knew such equipment could be surprisingly effective in most modern worlds, barring high-tech ones. Even in ancient worlds, an armlet computer equipped with solar panels and additional accessories could prove useful in combat.

While the Black Bullet world was set in 2030, after the ravaging of Gastrea Animals ten years ago, most technology had regressed rather than advanced. The armlet Morin held, in terms of computing power, easily surpassed the typical network defenses in the Tokyo Area.

Morin wasn't just lucky—his skills had been greatly enhanced after acquiring Sugou Nobuyuki's memories. His abilities with technology were formidable, and without them, he wouldn't have been able to outmaneuver Kayaba Akihiko in SAO.

Beep~!

In less than half a minute, Morin's hacking program, crafted from his acquired memories, effortlessly broke through the hospital's network defense system. It quickly commandeered nearby traffic and electronic devices, linking them to a shared network.

On the virtual light screen, Morin now saw a detailed topographical map of the hospital and the location of various monitoring equipment.

"This... there doesn't seem to be any personnel supervising? But there's a dedicated satellite signal network?!"

He stared at the light screen, puzzled. Sumire Muroto—one of the four sages in the Black Bullet world—was the person Morin was after.

Although Sumire didn't have many appearances in the anime, she was the driving force behind the New Human Creation Project (or more specifically, the Mechanical Soldier Project) in the Black Bullet world. Her intellect was unmatched, particularly in understanding the Gastrea Virus and the Mechanical Soldier Project. Morin had every intention of meeting her.

It was only logical that someone of her caliber would be treated as a national treasure, so Morin had mentally prepared himself for infiltrating several layers of defense. Even if security was strict, he would press on. Beyond his interest in the Repulsion Device he had recently acquired, he also needed her expertise in the Gastrea Virus to understand the situation surrounding Kohina and the lolis.

However, as Morin scanned the virtual light screen, he noticed that the hospital appeared to be poorly defended. Apart from a few cameras and satellite network links, there were no guards or security staff. This raised an eyebrow—how could the Tokyo Area neglect such a genius?

After some contemplation, Morin couldn't find an explanation, so he decided not to overthink it and simply proceed.

"No matter the situation, I'll take a look first."

Morin didn't want to risk drawing attention, so he changed into more inconspicuous clothes. His Jet-Black Midnight Coat and combat uniform were far too noticeable for the setting. If he were at the hospital for treatment, it wouldn't matter, but looking for Sumire Muroto in full gear would certainly attract unwanted attention.

Armed with the building blueprints, Morin navigated through the hospital, avoiding areas with heavy foot traffic. He headed directly for the rear sections of the building.

Soon, the number of pedestrians dwindled as Morin made his way through corridors and around corners. Finally, he reached the end of an empty passage where an ominous stairwell beckoned, leading down into what seemed like an underground structure.

"Ah... now I understand why no one monitors this place," Morin muttered to himself.

The stairs felt like the entrance to hell. The cool draft from below and the dim lighting created a chilling, eerie atmosphere. It was a setting few would want to guard, so it made sense that they only had cameras for surveillance.

With a shake of his head, Morin descended the stairs. The temperature noticeably dropped with each step. The cool air, combined with the low light, amplified the sense of gloom that enveloped the place. By now, even the bravest individuals might feel uneasy, and goosebumps would likely appear on anyone descending this stairwell.

Upon reaching the bottom, Morin's expression shifted from curious to surprised. There, positioned at either side of the door, stood two massive demon statues. They seemed to guard the entrance to something far more sinister, giving the impression that this could very well be the headquarters of a dark cult.

"Ding-dong!"

Morin reached out to press the doorbell, but after a long silence, there was no answer. Not even the faintest sound came from inside.

"...Excuse me?" he called, testing the waters.

He then turned the doornob and discovered the door wasn't locked.

With the faintest of chuckles, Morin stepped inside and was immediately greeted by a terrifying sight—one that made his hair stand on end.
