Chapter 127: History, Magic, and Universal Spells
"With the rapid development of magitech today, old-era magic has gradually been abandoned."
"But this doesn't mean we no longer use magic."
Professor Kazel flicked his finger, and a small flame danced on his fingertip.
The flame grew with the wind, transforming into a magic wand.
With another gentle shake, it turned into a thin card.
He blew on it again, extinguishing it, an outrageously cool display.
"Learning magic is very difficult and tedious. The vast majority of mages can only learn how to cast a single fireball spell in their entire lives. We usually call them magic apprentices, but magic apprentices were already very precious in the last century."
"Reciting incantations and channeling magic power are just one part of spellcasting."
"To truly cast a fireball spell, one must know how a fireball is produced, why it can burn, what the burning medium is, the relationship between magic power and flame, the laws governing flame temperature changes, its sustainable duration..."
...
Professor Kazel lectured in great detail.
So detailed that the young magi felt their heads were about to explode.
Dark Demon saw Diana already clutching her head, slumped on the desk, probably with little circles spinning in her eyes.
Fortunately, after a few minutes, Professor Kazel gently wrapped up the topic of old-era magic.
...
"But with the development of magitech, we have solved this problem."
"As long as we use magic language to write the corresponding spell, then imprint the spell onto a card, creating a complete magic card, we can activate it through simple summoning techniques, thereby casting magic."
"Of course, magic language is a course you won't learn until your second year."
"Magic language varies from person to person and involves many factors."
"The same fireball spell, when written by different magi, will result in different final spells."
"However, there are also some special spells that are universal types."
"Before learning magic language, we can try to create simple magic cards by transcribing these universal spells."
"Now turn to the appendix at the end of your textbook."
...
The students followed Professor Kazel's instructions and turned to the appendix page at the end of the textbook.
[Appendix 1. Universal Spells]
① Magic Missile Charm
② Push Charm
③ Barrier Charm
④ Fade Charm
⑤ Blink Charm
...
A total of five universal spells were recorded in the appendix of "Basic Magic Theory 1."
This was what the first-year students needed to learn.
"Magic Missile Charm, Push Charm..."
Dark Demon looked at the appendix with some surprise; these five universal spells were indeed somewhat different from what he had imagined for beginners.
"Under normal circumstances, shouldn't it be Fireball Spell 1, Fireball Spell 2, Fireball Spell 3... like that?"
It seemed most of the students shared his thoughts.
The students flipped through the contents, unable to resist whispering among themselves.
Professor Kazel watched the students whispering but wasn't annoyed; instead, a slight smile appeared on his face.
He gestured for quiet and said, "Although these five universal spells may seem basic, they are important spells that can accompany a magus throughout their entire life. As time goes on, you will naturally discover their importance. In today's class, we will only discuss the principles and not conduct experiments. Formal experiments will be conducted next week. And starting from this month, the professors will no longer provide material packs for experiments; you will need to find the material lists yourselves and purchase them with your own credits."
Compared to the confusion brought by the universal spells, Professor Kazel's last sentence clearly had a greater impact on the students.
After a brief silence, the classroom suddenly became noisy.
A girl immediately raised her hand: "Professor, what if we don't have enough credits to buy materials?"
Professor Kazel said kindly, "When assigning homework, professors will estimate your existing credits. As long as you listen carefully in class and complete your homework on time, there won't be a problem of insufficient credits."
Another student sharply caught the meaning in Professor Kazel's words and asked in astonishment, "Professor, does this mean that starting from today, there will also be experimental homework?"
Professor Kazel nodded: "Actually, there already has been. The creation of [Mystic Beasts] belongs to this type."
Then, several more students raised their hands with questions, and Professor Kazel answered them one by one.
After all the questions were answered, the young magi finally despaired.
It seemed that starting today, not only could they no longer just eat and wait for death, but they also had to learn to be meticulous in their calculations.
Emma, sitting in the front row, had a calm expression.
In the last row, Virt excitedly high-fived Robert.
Dark Demon, by the window, faced Diana's pitiful gaze and said heartlessly, "Solve it yourself."
Diana could only count on her fingers the expenses she had to cut.
Rose giggled on the side.
In fact, they had all obtained a considerable amount of credits from the masquerade ball event; as long as they didn't squander them, they were financially comfortable.
...
During the remaining class time, Professor Kazel meticulously explained the principles and methods of imprinting spells onto magic cards.
But the students were already in no mood to listen, just mechanically taking notes.
Apart from reminding the students not to forget to go to Traveler Street to buy materials over the weekend, Professor Kazel didn't assign any additional homework.
"Ding ling ling."
The class dismissal bell rang.
Once the professor left the classroom, the students' emotions instantly exploded.
The classroom was filled with all sorts of wails.
Many who had originally been looking forward to the afternoon's Magic History class, taught by the Headmistress as a substitute, now completely lost their enthusiasm.
Dark Demon, a smile playing on his lips, packed his things and prepared to leave the classroom.
But just as he was about to get up, Emma appeared before him.
Emma clutched her notebook and whispered, "You said you'd let me copy yours."
Dark Demon immediately remembered last night's events and said, "Tonight, then. I'll bring it to the library."
"Okay!" Emma responded softly and quickly left.
Diana glanced at Emma, then leaned close to Rose's ear and whispered, "Let's go to the library tonight too!"
Rose nodded: "Just right, we need to finish the homework Professor Lily assigned."
...
Dark Demon, after leaving the classroom, didn't go to the cafeteria.
He knocked on the door and entered Professor Kazel's office, asking, "Professor, is it convenient?"
The professor nodded slightly and gestured towards the sofa.
Dark Demon sat on the sofa and skillfully began to brew tea.
Professor Kazel sighed and suddenly said, "Demon, I'm truly sorry."
Dark Demon was stunned for a moment, then smiled, "Professor, it's not me you need to apologize to."
A trace of sadness appeared on Professor Kazel's face: "I've felt guilty for so many years. If I had been more resolute in stopping them from entering the ancient temple back then, none of this would have happened. When I learned Didi's goal was to create the Goddess's Tear, I couldn't bring myself to stop her. Thank goodness you were there."
Dark Demon said helplessly, "I wasn't talking about her either."
Professor Kazel nodded: "I know."
Dark Demon: "Let's change the subject. Professor, I want to know what's so special about the castle's location, and what is historical imaging?"
