Chapter 95 - Chapter 95: Contact Point

The man who stepped from the shadows wore no uniform—just a charcoal-gray coat, dark slacks, and black gloves. His face was clean-shaven, his features calm, but his eyes carried the weight of someone who had seen too much and survived because he knew when not to speak. His posture was composed, professional—like someone who never left the field even when the agency erased his name.

Fury stopped mid-stride, pistol raised, but didn't fire.

"Don't shoot," the man said calmly. "I'm not here to kill you."

Fury's voice was flat. "That makes you the only one today."

The stranger didn't move. "Name's Monroe. Embedded asset. Black-level clearance. Off-the-books since 2009. I've been tracking Zola's resurgent nodes for the last fourteen months."

Fury narrowed his eye. "That's funny. Because I've been chasing ghosts. And they usually don't talk back."

Monroe raised his hands slowly in a gesture of peace. "Zola's not a ghost anymore. He's metastasized—spreading across secure networks, hijacking dormant SHIELD protocols. You're not just dealing with remnants. He's active. He's coordinated. And you just walked into one of his killboxes."

As if on cue, a low groan echoed behind them through the maintenance shaft. Stone shifted. Something heavy stirred beneath the rubble.

The Winter Soldier was still coming.

Monroe didn't flinch. "I've got a vehicle topside," he said, nodding toward a steel stairwell door near the far corner of the garage. "Unmarked. Jam-resistant. Bulletproof. You've got thirty seconds before that corridor unblocks."

Fury kept his weapon aimed. "You're asking me to trust you."

"I'm asking you to survive long enough to make that decision," Monroe replied. "You want to walk out of this alive, we need to move now."

A beat of silence passed. Fury weighed the odds. He was running out of time. And options.

Then Fury moved.

The two sprinted to the stairwell, boots clanging against the metal steps. Each turn upward echoed with urgency. Behind them, stone crumbled further as something slammed against the collapsed corridor from below.

Dust and grit fell from the ceiling. The Winter Soldier was close—too close.

At the surface, Monroe shoved open the rooftop access door. A gust of wind whipped through the night air, carrying with it the sound of distant sirens and the glow of red lights flickering on the skyline. Parked nearby on a maintenance platform sat a matte-black SUV, engine humming softly, reinforced body coated with a light ceramic armor sheen.

They didn't speak. They ran.

Monroe jumped into the driver's seat. Fury dove in behind him, door slamming shut just as the garage's rooftop hatch groaned.

The engine roared to life.

Tires screeched against concrete as Monroe threw the vehicle into gear. The SUV tore away from the rooftop garage just as the steel hatch behind them exploded upward in a violent burst of smoke and debris.

Shards of metal scattered across the platform.

A cybernetic hand gripped the edge.

The Winter Soldier pulled himself out of the smoke, rifle raised. His silhouette stood against the night sky, cloak torn, red lens glowing with icy focus.

He wasn't alone.

Two more figures emerged behind him—both armored, their movements synchronized. One carried a compact launcher strapped to his shoulder, its targeting system already active. The other spun twin blades with impossible speed, testing the air.

Both wore insignia Fury hadn't seen before—modified variants of the HYDRA crest, edged in crimson.

Fury looked back through the rear window.

"Well," he muttered, breath catching in his throat. "This just got worse."
