The hunter collapsed instantly. Megan reacted instantly, diving to catch him, but the momentum was too much. He pulled her down with him in a tangle of limbs.
"Oof!" she grunted, the air knocked from her lungs as he landed on top of her.
"You are so... heavy!" She huffed, struggling to breathe under his bulk. With a strained push, she managed a desperate wriggle that left her sprawled on her back, the damp earth cool against her skin. Leaves clung to her clothes and hair.
Sitting up slowly, she pressed a hand to her chest, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
"Right," she said, a note of exasperation in her voice. "Just what I needed."
There was no way she could take him home. Her parents would lose their minds. But she couldn't leave him here either, the woods weren't exactly forgiving to those who lingered after dark.
