Ash opened his eyes as the dim light of dawn slowly seeped into the cave. The campfire had burned down, leaving behind only faintly glowing embers.
He blinked a few times, trying to adjust to the morning light, before realizing that something warm was pressed against his side.
Turning his head, he found Jagu curled up between him and Maya. The big cat was nestled comfortably, his large body sprawled in the limited space, making it feel even more cramped. His tail lay lazily across Ash's legs, moving slightly with each slow breath he took. Maya was still asleep, tucked beneath her blanket, her breathing deep and steady, unconsciously pulling the fabric tighter against herself in reaction to the morning chill.
Ash let himself enjoy this rare moment of peace. It had been so long since he had felt safe, even if only temporarily. But he knew this wouldn't last long. They had to get moving.
