Early the next morning,
David woke up to the sound of knocking at his door.
Still groggy from sleep, he stretched before making his way to answer it. When he opened the door, he was met with an unexpected but pleasant sight—Lucy, holding breakfast in her hands.
"I figured you'd be too lazy to go out for food, so I brought you something," she said casually, stepping inside before he could respond.
David smirked, feeling a warmth in his chest. It was rare for someone to care for him like this.
"Well, aren't you thoughtful," he teased, closing the door behind her.
The two sat opposite each other, eating in comfortable silence. The atmosphere between them felt oddly domestic, like that of an ordinary young couple sharing breakfast together.
As they ate, David turned on the TV in the living room, hoping to liven up the mood.
"Good morning, Night City! This is your old pal, Stanley! Man, the streets have been crazy lately, huh? I mean, did you hear about that whole building going up in flames over on Sakura Street? Talk about a hot topic—literally!"
David frowned as he flipped through the channels. No matter which station he switched to, every news report was covering the same incident.
"Hello, everyone, I'm Gillian Jordan with News 54, bringing you the latest on the Sakura Street blaze. Sources confirm that the burned-down building was none other than the headquarters of the Tiger Claw gang. Inside, nearly a hundred gang members were present at the time of the fire, including their leader, Yoko Taro. As of now, there are no reports of survivors!"
"WNS local report here—this is Arif Iqbal with an update. In addition to Tiger Claw members, it appears that high-ranking officials from Arasaka were also inside the building that night. Arasaka has since vowed full cooperation with the NCPD, promising to leave no stone unturned in the investigation. Meanwhile, tensions within the gang are rising, with various factions now vying for control."
David switched off the TV with an annoyed sigh.
"Guess that mess really shook the city," he muttered.
Lucy leaned back in her chair, arms crossed. "Of course it did. The Tiger Claws have their hands in all sorts of businesses. With their HQ gone, their operations are bound to fall apart. And with Arasaka getting dragged into the mix, things are only going to get messier."
She shot David a knowing look. "This is exactly why I told you to think twice before jumping into things."
David raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And here I thought you liked my boldness."
Lucy rolled her eyes but didn't argue.
David smirked and leaned closer, his face mere inches from hers. "Or maybe... you were just worried about me?"
Lucy's breath hitched.
For a moment, memories of their kiss at the Tiger Claw HQ flooded her mind. A faint blush crept onto her cheeks as she turned her head away.
"I... I was just stating facts," she muttered, avoiding his gaze.
David chuckled at her reaction. "You're cute when you're flustered, you know that?"
"Shut up," she grumbled, her face growing even redder.
But David wasn't done teasing. He reached out, ruffling her hair affectionately. "What happened to all that confidence, huh? You were acting all bold before."
Lucy swatted his hand away. "I—I'm not flustered!"
"Yeah?" David grinned mischievously. "Then let's test that."
Before she could react, he tilted her chin up and pressed a light kiss against her lips.
Lucy's eyes widened in shock, but before she could fully process it, he pulled away, licking his lips as if savoring the taste.
"Not spicy," he mused. "Sweet."
"You—!" Lucy's face turned bright red.
She punched his chest, but David only laughed, easily pulling her into his arms.
"Haha, what? You started it!"
"You're impossible!" she huffed, squirming in his hold.
But David held firm, his grin widening. "And you love it."
Lucy glared at him playfully before her lips curled into a smirk of her own. "Oh, you think you're so clever, huh?"
Without warning, she shifted positions, swinging one leg over his lap and straddling him.
David stiffened.
Whoa.
This escalated fast.
His hands instinctively moved to her waist, and for a brief moment, they just stared at each other.
The air in the room grew thick with tension.
Lucy leaned in, her face mere inches from his. "What's wrong, David?" she purred. "Cat got your tongue?"
David swallowed hard. "Lucy… what exactly are you trying to do here?"
She smirked. "What do you think?"
Slowly, she lowered her head, closing the distance between them—
Knock! Knock! Knock!
The sudden sound at the door made them both freeze.
David cursed under his breath. Who the hell was knocking at this hour?
Lucy sighed, reluctantly pulling away.
David ran a hand through his hair, clearly irritated. "Who is it?"
"Yo! Mano! You awake?!"
David immediately recognized the voice.
Jackie.
Of course.
Jackie's voice boomed through the door. "Come on, open up! I brought you breakfast, hombre!"
David clenched his jaw. Great timing, Jackie. Really.
Lucy, on the other hand, was stifling a laugh, clearly enjoying his frustration.
Jackie knocked again. "Hey, V! Open up, man! Breakfast is getting cold!"
David sighed in defeat, shooting Lucy a glance. "This isn't over."
She just winked at him.
With an exaggerated groan, he got up and opened the door.
Jackie greeted him with his usual bright grin. "Hey, brother! Thought you might need some fuel after yesterday!"
But then his gaze shifted past David, landing on Lucy sitting casually in the living room, nibbling on her breakfast.
Jackie's smile faltered.
"Oh... uh..." His eyes darted back to David. "Did I... interrupt something?"
David deadpanned. "What do you think?"
Jackie blinked, then grinned awkwardly. "Heh… My bad, mano."
David sighed, rubbing his temples. First the news ruining my morning, now Jackie ruining my—
Jackie suddenly gasped. "Wait a second! Is this a love breakfast?!"
Lucy chuckled from the couch. "Looks like you caught us."
David shot her a look, but she just shrugged innocently.
Jackie's eyes lit up. "Damn, V! You move fast! No wonder you look kinda pissed—I totally killed the mood, huh?"
David sighed again, slumping against the doorway.
Lucy just smirked at him.
Yeah.
He really needed to start locking his door.
